khitsicker: Emergency backup goalies winning are the second best thing in the NHL apart from goalie fights.

Montreal losing is the first.

Yep. Now we wait for a team to tank for the overall number one pick. If they had any brains they could have avoided that problem.

I have a radical idea for a draft system. What if the worst team is given the 1st overall pick. Not like the NFL does that without any problems

Tanking.

Which only really happened once in NHL history (the 84 turtle derby to draft Mario Lemieux). The fears over tanking are vastly overestimated. Most teams do not tank, in that while ownership and maybe management want a good pick, the coaches and players certainly do not. They are playing for their careers and will fight game in and game out. They don't give a shiat what rookie is on the team next year.

So the paranoia over tanking is overblown and the lottery is a solution in search of a problem. The very real fear now are the terrible teams doomed to decades of cellar-dwelling mediocrity because they quite simply can't win the lottery.

The NFL doesn't have a tanking problem and they have no lottery system. The idea that hyper competitive athletes at the pro level will intentionally lose is so absurd it's hilarious

FTFA:  "'To be honest with you, not surprised,' Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman said. 'We had an 18.5 percent chance of winning the first pick. So realistically, I'm prepared to be sitting here today not talking about the first pick. I'm not really surprised. The bottom eight, or the eight playoff teams, had a 24.5 percent chance combined of getting the pick. So the odds were better that the first pick went to the bottom eight than it did us.'"

Why even put the qualifying teams into the draft lottery?  Maybe split it into two lottery draws, the non-qualifying teams get drawn for the top picks and the eight playoff teams get drawn for the next 8 picks?  I'd love to know how the negotiations around the drafty lottery went when they were deciding how to restart the season.

Agreed on the athletes.  Not management though.  Buffalo tanking for McDavid comes to mind.
