OK.  So it is alright to be tightly packed in a tube with other people breathing recirculated air because the real danger is stowing luggage.  Got it.

The bags don't breathe on each other. I guess it has to do with how passengers load the compartments. Lots of breathing right over top of people to do that. It's still an insignificant risk compared with simply being packed together for the duration of a flight.
