At least they go out in style there.

It's not easy to bar crawl in Singapore.  It's not easy to even get a decent drink.  They don't really approve of alcohol over there.

There are some countries that are just too serious to even consider risky behavior.

Singapore rice noodles is a fantastic dish and I dont care if they're an Americanized abomination.

Raffles bar?

I had 3 Singapore Slings.

The sinks in the bathroom were clogged with vomit.

That place is the Dubai of Southeast Asia. Looks like a good idea and tons of money, turns out to be a bad idea. Watch yourself if you go there.

That said, I have little doubt that the group in question were behaving badly. Someone from their company should have instructed them on exactly how strict Singapore is. They were lucky just to get kicked out. I'm sure a lawyer from the company facilitated that.

A good round of bar golf is at least nine stops.

Uh, hello, you can get caned for spitting your gum out on the sidewalk! They make droogs look peaceful by comparison! This is one of the last places in the world where you want to go on a bar crawl.

"A separate group, an American couple and an Austrian, were also punished for drinking on the same day."

Oh my God - parties have to stagger their drinking out to one person per day?! You monsters.

Raffles, there's an American style bar over by the American Embassy, and yeah, private clubs, like you're in God damned Utah or something.

US$6500 fine, that's it?
Don't they usually give 50 strokes with a cane before they hang you?
Geez, talk about white privilege.

Y'all missing out on all the awesome food, and you really need to fark up to get caned as a tourist. They'd rather fine your ass and deport you.

/you don't get caned for gum, you can bring in a small amount for personal use. Friend tried to bring a display case (like 30 5 stick packs) of Wrigley's from malaysia and the border guard made him throw it away. I warned him and I just snickered.

some things worth noting in context:

-the bars were open for takeaway sales, so the drinking itself wasn't the problem

-there were other groups of people drinking in public at the same time.

-social media outrage at foreigners

Yahtzee!

LOL.  The bad news is we're going to hang you.  The good news is we're going to beat you so bad you'll be looking forward to it.

Lived there for 3.5 years. Best food ever.
Co-worker did get arrested for unlicensed (foreign) cigarettes though. Glad I don't smoke.

I do intend to make my way over to Singapore post-pandemic, especially after watching Westworld (pretty much the only good thing to come out of that season).

Seriously east Asian cultures have the best local food, no matter your cultural heritage. Just even towns over completely different styles and prep method. Cities like yours just smash it all together.

Well, I was only going to be there once!

Plus I was on £35 per day food allowance, despite being given three meals a day.

Can't beat the conference industry (at least when there are conferences). Sucks now, but I do something else these days.

You can get booze easily enough in Singapore, but it's hideously expensive - a small, uninteresting beer will cost about what your fantastic main dish does, or more. I remember 10 SGD glasses of mediocre lager at ok bars and 5-7 SGD plates of amazing at mall food courts and outdoor food stalls. I took my hosts out for drinks one evening, and realized that it was a far more generous offer than dinner out.

Only near run-in I had with Authority over there was the morning I was absentmindedly eating the delicious Malaysian pastry I'd picked up for breakfast as I entered the subway station.

"Madam, you may not eat in here!" thundered the loudspeakers.

I punched right out at the exit gate, not even thinking about wrapping it up and stuffing it in my bag, because I was completely uninterested in sticking around to see if that would be compliant enough.

Singapore is a great place to visit and preserves some elements of Chinese culture that were purged in the Mainland, but don't let the British surface features make you forget yourself. Living there beyond a normal long vacation seems like it could be stressful.
