Obesity Crisis? What obesity crisis?

I've never believed these stories, but years ago an acquaintance did this. They didn't look fat. And I guess denial is a very powerful force.

I knew a woman who was an esitmated 7 months pregnant and she didn't know.

Neither did anyone else, she was horribly obese.

I was 10 weeks along and had lost weight (almost 10lbs that I really didn't have to lose) after being "sick with the flu" for about two weeks during which I slept a lot and my then-husband told me I needed to go to the doctor because I "had cancer or something" before I knew.

He was born in Iowa. Things were not looking bright for him the moment he was conceived.

I mean, there was some hope. Our neighbors are Iowans who escaped. Fantastic people who've done well for themselves, now.

TLC has a reality show/documentary/whatever about ten years ago called I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant. And yeah....there were a lot of cases where you thought 'Woman, how could you not know you were pregnant?!' but there were also a few cases where you'd go 'Ooookay...you're right. In your case being pregnant definitely would not have occurred to me either.'

It happens. Sometimes it's because the woman is stupid, naive, fat, or (tragically) too young to understand. But sometimes there just isn't any symptoms - no sickness, no baby bump - nothing. Until they go into labor. It happens.

Aww. I was really hoping for Society of Wood Engravers...

//There's a meetup to avoid at all costs...
//Still, the plaque was lovely.

Actually, wood engraving is an old printmaking technique that involves using a burin on a hard, end-grain wood board, as opposed to woodcut, which is done on standard plank-cut boards. It allows for very fine detail and used to be the primary means of image reproduction in popular media prior to the invention of photogravure. It's still used by some amazing craftsmen today, such as this example by Barry Moser.

Ok., admittedly that's well done. And, possibly a nightmare on LSD.

Now that I've been pregnant, I seriously don't understand how this is possible. Although I've had very minor pregnancy symptoms, I know I'm pregnant. Food tastes fantastic in a way it never did before. My boobs hurt.  There are certain pains I've gotten in my abdomen, not to mention lightening crotch is a thing. I'm only 15 weeks in, and although I can't feel movement yet, I know there is something there. Plus the whole not having a period for almost a year thing. I know women carry differently, but there is a foreign mass sitting in your body that weighs 10+ pounds filled with liquid and a human body inside of it.

That was the other thing for me. I didn't stop having my period until 13 weeks. Not just "spotting" as my doctor tried to mansplain to me. Full blown.

It's the greatest thing, honey, ever since I started eating those pickles, I stopped having a period.  This could be great for women everywhere. A way to end your periods. And I discovered it.  Go out and get me some more of those damn pickles... I gots the craving again!

This happened to a girl I knew in high school. She never really showed much, more like "put on a few pounds." She said later that she had always had erratic periods.

One day she had a terrible stomach ache, sat on the toilet, and a baby came out and hit the water. Oh shiat...

I agree with you. I understand how some women don't know they're preggo during the first trimester, especially if they've never been pregnant or their cycles are wacky, but after having two kids myself I just don't know how you wouldn't know. Especially by the eighth month when you're homicidal from lack of sleep because you're so uncomfortable and you're pissing yourself everytime you get kicked.
