(NPR)   Attorney General Barr says the DOJ acts independently of Trump interests. He's no Chris Rock, but admit it.... that was damn hilarious   (npr.org) divider line

The DOJ can't really be disinfected after what Barr did to it.  It needs to be cleansed with fire.

There is a lot of government that will need this treatment. But I think DOJ and CDC are the places that should be first and second.

Someone will need to restore the entire IG culture government wide.

This. Watchdogs and government accountability need to not only be reestablished and strengthened, but they need to be codified into law and given consequences with some legitimate teeth if they are not met.

In order of importance, I'd list DOJ, State Department, EPA, Treasury, Dept of Interior, and then CDC/HHS

It's bad enough that we might legitimately get some structural reform, if we don't tilt full nazi instead. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the folks that have gotten used to getting away with all the small grifts.

Political and law enforcement malfeasance should be the only capital crime, and it should be enforced at reasonable doubt, not beyond shadow of doubt.

And OPR just issued a statement that a whisteblower complaint that Bill Barr opened antitrust investigations into the marijuana industry not because he believed they were violating antitrust but rather because he wanted to shut down dispensaries is without merit because it's not illegal for Bill Barr to pursue charges he knew to be meritless.

Because Trump is a useful distraction for them to implement their agenda.

Nuclear fire will be needed.  The contamination is severe.  I fervently hope that Barr will find himself prosecuted along with every Trump official who debased their office.

Attorney General William Barr said Thursday that he doesn't believe President Trump has overstepped the boundaries between the White House and the Justice Department in a number of big recent cases.

Trump doesn't need to overstep the boundaries.  Barr is doing it for him.

That's a good plan.   The guy who essentially decides what is legal will go to jail if his boss loses this election.  So put all your eggs and the eggs of everyone else in that basket.

There was a great (tweet? post? something?) from someone claiming to have worked in Pres. Obama's DOJ, remembering his first meeting with the team, and imploring them all to act with independence...

Wait... found it:

If we get another president after Mango Mass Murderer, whoever it is needs to do that with _every_ Federal institution.  But, first, fire every Trump appointee and everyone hired during the Trump administration -- "but, but, but, tradition says we don't do that!" be *damned*.  The good ones (if there are any) can re-apply.  Anyone who retired or left during the Trump admin, if they were hired before 2017, should be recruited to return, too. A metric assload of apolitical expertise was lost because of him.

The only way to fix this is admitting that we have a catastrophe on our hands, and it needs to be fixed.  A bandaid ain't gonna fix a gaping chest wound.

And then, once that's done (a benefit of Mr. Biden's experience in the White House is the hope that he might be able to hit the ground running with an entire database of people already ready to go), dig into EVERY MEMBER OF THE PREVIOUS ADMIN and apply the rule of law to whatever is found.

But, first, we need good people back to make sure that gets done well.

tricycleracer: Can someone Schoolhouse Rock me why the Department of Justice isn't part of the Judiciary branch?

DoJ enforces the law (Executive Branch); Judiciary (SCOTUS) interprets the law.

FTA:

"The statistics on police shootings of unarmed individuals are not skewed toward the African American," he said. "There are many whites who are shot unarmed by police."

Holy shiat, despite that being a lie, how the fark can you see a situation where hundreds  of Americans of *any* color are being shot, unarmed, by police and not acknowledge we have a farking problem with how we do policing in this country?

Fark you NPR for your stenography.  That's not reporting or journalism geniuses.  None of us give a shiat what a tool like Barr "says."

tricycleracer: Can someone Schoolhouse Rock me why the Department of Justice isn't part of the Judiciary branch?

Simple answer-it enforces the law, the sole province of the Executive Branch.

I think it was Abramson the other day (plugging a book) saying Barr is serving himself, and occasionally his interests align with Trump.  Oh, and Barr belongs in jail for his own interests that don't involve being Trumps obstructive enabler.

It's obvious that the DOJ needs to be independent of any branch, or have oversight that is untouchable by the President.

Also, usually a bad idea to have the investigators/prosecutors and judges living under the same roof.

If he doesn't look out for Trump's interests he ends up like Jeff Sessions: unemployed and out of favors. But with a lot more criminal behavior under his belt.

Barr just came out and said mail in ballots will obviously be forged.  But yes, the plan is to vote this guy out.  Are we really that dumb?  We're just going to pretend this isn't happening?

He is, apparently, willing to say anything as long as he isn't under oath. Probably while under oath as well. There's a lot of gall on display.

DOJ just confirmed there is an OLC memo determining that Trump did not commit obstruction of justice in the Mueller probe:
