It's Arizona. The state's motto translates to "fark you, I've got mine" in 243 languages living and dead.

My town has one of the biggest July 4th celebrations in the state. They (both town managers and the governor) refuse to shut down the parade, the rodeo, or the dance. The VFW is going to be packed to the gills (that's usually where my family goes to watch the parade) and so are the Mormon churches, both Circle-K's will be packed, Safeway, the dollar stores, and on and on. Our population will at least triple for July 4th weekend. This is going to be a clusterfark. I am keeping my ass home.

It is a BANGIN' parade.  It blows my mind how such a tiny town can have such great entries.

I watched Douchey's COVID presser this afternoon, where he literally begged AZ citizens to wear masks and stay home, then implored the media to tell people "Its bad, stay home and wear a mask", yet he didn't have the balls to re-close the state or make masks a state-wide requirement, rather than the piece-meal, "each municipality can enact their own mask policy" BS he approved last week.  He's such a Drumpf lackey.

My mom is 95, soon to be 96.  I remarked that mask-wearing had become a political football, that Republicans were generally against wearing masks as it was an affront to their "freedom".  She looked at me and said, "I don't see a problem with that.  They can get the virus then".  LOL.  Old, old school libby lib.

Arizona is going blue. Mark Kelly is ahead of McSally in the senate polls. The mayor of Tucson is a Hispanic woman. The mayor of Phoenix is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat from ABQ who was married to Ruben Gallego, and the chief of Phoenix Police is a woman of color -- Jeri Williams. Look her up. She's pretty fascinating.

The sheriff who now has that fat f*ck Arpaio's old job, Paul Penzone, is a Democrat.

We're getting there. Slowly. But it's happening. Some of us have been fighting for decades to fix things here. It's starting to pay off.

When Regina Romero was elected mayor in Tucson lat year, the Republicans couldn't even manage to field a candidate.  The GOP write-in got a whopping 0.72% of the vote, finishing behind the Green Party candidate and the president of a local advertising agency who ran as an independent.  That tells you how toxic the GOP brand is around here.

Gov Abbott of Texas also banned counties and cities from requiring that citizens wear masks.  He strangely allows them to require businesses to require patrons wear masks, but several police departments have said they will not enforce any such requirements.

Because you expect people who run ostensibly to prove the only uses for government is to grease the skids for major business and to make sure the wrong women can't have abortions to actually do anything worthwhile for their people?

Honestly I've come to the conclusion that a lot of Republicans are honest-to-God apocalypse seekers, they've given up on doing the right thing here on Earth, thoroughly convinced they have already reserved their place in the Eternal Kingdom of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. And they're busy trying to move up the schedule of the End of Days, even though the Bible almost literally states "it will come when it comes, and not a moment sooner".

How different would be the Bible, and Christianity, be if Revelations was declared non-canon at the beginning of the Church?

I went to Spring Training during the first week, just as Corona was starting to test positive in the US, and Trump was saying it would disappear.  There were absolutely zero precautions being taken at the airport, in ballparks, at hotels, restaurants, anywhere.  And there wasn't any reason to, really.  Nobody knew how rapidly it was traversing the borders.

But people from all over were starting to converge on Arizona and Florida for the Cactus League and Grapefruit League games, from all over America and internationally.  I was sitting in the airport waiting for my departure and monitoring the news releases out of China, where the crisis was in full swing.  We watched the video of the Chinese rolling trucks through the streets spraying disinfectant.

I sat in the airport for about a half hour with my bare arm resting on a counter.  When I lifted it up, I had a rash.  It wasn't corona of course, but it was something.  I cleaned it well, and was immediately fine... but the point was made - they weren't even employing enough hygiene to curb mild pathogens.  They didn't care about what they couldn't see.  They were farked, it was only a matter of time.

The only cure they will embrace is survival.

mcreadyblue: several police departments have said they will not enforce any such requirements.

Ha! Like they'd actually enforce any new laws. Not to mention it'd take time away from their real job of terrifying the living hell out of the minority neighborhoods.

The sheriffs in our area flat out refused to become "mask police" to the county commissioners and as result our mask order has no real teeth to it what-so-ever. Basically in Florida you can say, "It's against my religion" or print out that stupid exempt card and there's fark all anyone can do about it.

Honestly the thought of relying on government officials now is f'n hilarious.  The president is 100% above the law while simultaneously detached from anything resembling reality, and pretty much any republican government official mirrors his actions and behaviors like a toddler mimicking the family pet. The few adults in the various rooms are drowned out by calls for "save the economy," "my rights," and "need a haircut;" as opposed to anything actually f'n helpful.

Given most sheriffs, at least in my area, are die hard southern republicans; they're not policing shiat for the public good and haven't for decades. Then there are the for profit cop shops, they're just as useless in similar ways. If it doesn't get them a freebie paid vacation while the bad press dies down, a 6 digit property grab, ticket quota, or a presser with visuals of some poor asshole's pot plants they don't give a fark.

I've been wearing a P99 + organic gases mask for 4 months now, I've had red-hat boomers practically f'n cuddle up against me in line at the store during my bi-monthly re-stocking trips, as their "statement" against my desire to stay alive.  Now, four months in, people are saying "Cool mask," instead of mocking me. The only reply I can think is to mouth "fark-off" from under the plastic.

They wanted bodies in the streets, we're going to have them. The bullshiat they slung from Feb - now, has completely confused, dismayed, and farked over the population. February, "Masks are useless, save them for the doctors!!"  End of June: "Everyone wear masks or we're farked!!!" Toss in the lower half of the intellectual bell curve and their conspiracy theories coupled with faith and/or political denial of reality, and we're royally farked no matter what at this point.

We're going to need a China and Korea level lock-down to even dent the curve at this point.  Hand made masks, hanging off republican chins, covering absolutely nothing, are not going to do shiat now.   The U.S.'s lack of public care over the last 50 years is really showing its ass right now, everything from public healthcare to better public education could have greatly reduced the spread of this disease.  Since those were too f'n late to the game to be of any use, why not keep doing everything under the heading of "too little too late."  Settle in folks, we're on this ride for at least another 18 months and I've got money that says we're looking at a 3 year minimum battle with this bug.

My severely-immunocompromised nephew lives in AZ. He's being kept at home by his parents to protect him from the guanopsychotic deranged shiatweasels populating the area. My brother is a judge, and has to have security to protect him from deranged shiatweasels who are offended he's trying to keep his son alive by wearing a mask.

I keep asking- at what point can we justifiably take action to defend ourselves and our families from these willing plague vectors?

I hope whoever is in charge of those vents has enough forethought to hang onto them. They could use them in stepdown, ED, and recovery. Provided, of course, they have staff capable of running them. But a big part of the problem is not only how many are needed but how long they're needed for. This shiat drags on. Even in younger people with no health problems it's not a quick recovery.

Stay safe, AZ Farkers. This sucks, I'm 9 days into it and I'm still dealing with diminished lung capacity, weakness, poor coordination, and nerve pain.

Meanwhile in Dallas, the Hispanic thrifts have put up hand written "no masque, no servicio" signs. I don't know if that came top down, but the Mexican-Americans are more likely to cover their noses than other groups. It does both.  If both people are wearing masks the chance of infection for an unafflicted individual drops from mid-to-high 80's to less than 2%.

Bovine Diarrhea Virus: Looks like I moved out of Arizona just in time. That's good!
Of course, I ended up moving to Florida. That's bad.
Luckily, I live a fairly small community where numbers have remained low. That's good!
Unfortunately, I'm surrounded by an ultra-conservative population that thinks masks are the work of the devil. That's bad.

But how's the frogurt?

Aren't you an ultra-conservative that supported Trump, who is  the only reason ultra-conservatives think masks are the work of the devil?

FTA: "We have failed on so many levels," said Dana Marie Kennedy, the Arizona director of AARP

I do not have a clue who she is or what the AARP is, I do not know what she did or did not do up to this point. I do not know if she said he was Covid-19 hoax, was realistic, or extremely pessimistic.

I do know that this is what taking responsibilities looks like.

/going to the google now.

ecmoRandomNumbers: My town has one of the biggest July 4th celebrations in the state.

Leave the area immediately. With that kind of concentration the infection spread of stupidity be inescapable, to say nothing of the covirus.

Even DeSantis wasn't stupid enough to do that.

AARP is the NCAA of the NAACP with some NIST and NOAA thrown in, as well as a bit of NCSA.
