I'm really not surprised that, of all things, he's getting busted for having run a crypto scheme.

Not as long as we treat white collar crime with kids gloves.

Abramoff is just auditioning to be the new head of the SEC now that Jay Clayton is going to the DOJ.  He's Trump's kinda guy.

I remember him because he killed my industry in the mid-2000s. Online gambling.

Yes.  I remember him.  Back when you could hold a Republican accountable for corruption and illegal activities.

How is he not part of Trumps administration?

Wire fraud.  I think next to mail fraud that will get you nailed faster than anything.  It's like a bonus on farking up.  They hold that in their pocket until needed. "Did you mail a christtmas card to your grandma and mention you were crypto-ing?"  Busted.  Fed tennis camp you are off to.

It's like he's an habitual petty criminal that keeps getting busted for theft and B&E within 2 weeks of release. Because they lack any other life skills, they turn back to crime.

I think i remember some memes about him being on dancing with the stars?

I would say this is a BOLD way to apply for a position at the Trump administration.
I would also say it's not really a prime time to do so.

But, this is the regular way to apply for a position at the Trump administration.
And it's never a prime time to do so.

How is he even allowed NEAR any financial exchanges?

hubiestubert: How is he even allowed NEAR any financial exchanges?

Crypto isn't a financial anything, it's unregulated illegal gambling (illegal in practice to the point that even the "unregulated" part sometimes fails to protect the people involved from the consequences of the "illegal" part, as we see in TFA).  Running a crypto scam is basically the same thing as conning people for their ATM details so you can empty out their accounts and play the ponies, it's not legitimate enough to be certified by anyone in the first place.

// Not that financial exchanges are actually useful, meaningful or economically productive in any real sense, but they are at least (poorly, but still) regulated, legal gambling so they've got that over crypto.

The current Republican administration is so corrupt and damaging to the US with new bullsh*t every single week that it's easy to forget just how corrupt the last Republican administration was.

More importantly: how does anyone think, "Hey, Jack Abramoff is involved. It's totes legit and will make me money!"

Just remember what ol' Jack Abramoff does when the feds raid, and the subpoenas fall from the sky, and the pillars of our economy shake. Yeah, Jack Abramoff just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "I got nothing. So, it's back to prison then?"
