Liked him a lot, but he abandoned a 10/11YO daughter.
Hard to forgive.

Maybe the world is better off with one less entitled privileged white man. At least that's what I hear lately.

I remember watching him as a guest judge on Top Chef.

He went out of his way to verbally destroy the losing contestants.

Sure, he was a good cook  but presented himself as a rather sucky human being. IMHO

I don't fawn over him like most people on Fark do, but his contribution to culinary arts and the restaurant industry in the US is undeniable.

/I'm more of an Alton Brown guy, personally.

If nothing else that's a clear example of how insidious, horrifying, and relentless depression can be

I put it up on TFD yesterday that I've never seen Parts Unknown and will be watching one episode a day for the next while.

I also posted this marvelous story that David Simon shared about how he made it a mission in life to be friends with Bourdain.

It isn't fair to say, but could anyone, in their wildest imagination, see Trump in a similar situation....

God I just made myself sad.

Perhaps he just wanted to give a taste of what working in a real kitchen is like. I went from dishwasher to Sous Chef the old fashioned way, and it's not for the faint of heart.

Maybe.  But no way could he express himself as well, or as compassionately as President Obama did.

I will always remember fondly the time Anthony Bourdain took Alton Brown to the Clermont Lounge:

Clearly, you have no understanding of depression. He probably thought he was doing them a favor.

I don't believe you. Either that, or a) the contestants deserved it, or b) you can't recognize a schtick when you see it.

He bugged me sometimes because he was a well read and intelligent guy and he really wanted to make sure you knew it. Some of the writing for the show was very good, some got a little pompous.

That requires skill but is doable, throw in enough charm and they will love you for it.

I say this as someone who enjoyed watching his show:

He was an ungrateful, selfish, pompous asshole who managed to get in a relationship with one the few people worse than he was and then killed himself when she stepped out on him.  Most of us would have killed to have his well-paying job of being on vacation and getting wined and dined by the best chefs in every country he visited, but obviously his life was so terrible because the washed-up psychotic BPD pedophile sentient red flag he was dating predictably cheated on him.

Sure.
I have an opinion.  It is mine--and no one has to like it.
You can tell me whatever fills this apparent need you have for being rude to random people on the internet.
Consider me "F*cked Off."

I hope you feel all better now.

The trick is, the person has to be smart enough to know that they are being told to F off

This is often the downfall of that plan

as for cooking shows, I've been addicted to the AU/NZ ones (MKR, anyone?) but jayzus over the last 10 years they've slowly degraded from polite/lovely to approaching the same American "reality"-scripted-conflict popular nonsense. The Trip / Trip to Italy is pretty cute tho'

I remember reading Medium Raw, and wondering how his publisher/editor read that first chapter and didn't have him committed to a psychiatric hospital instead of publishing it.

Also, he's wearing a shirt with a confederate flag so therefore he was a racist.

Thing is, he knew he was a privileged white man. That's why he spent so much of the last years of his life promoting the food and culture of other peoples.

Having known people who suffer from clinical depression, it's quite likely he felt she would be better off without him.

I never understand the hate with Guy. Yeah the frosted hair annoys some people. But he's a decent human who wants to give back to the culinary community

please don't eat octopusesies, like he did.  they are intelligent, and probably magical aliens.  nevertheless, i really hate how he went.  it's sad for him, tragic for his family, and farking terrifying for all of us.  just like Steve Jobs money (and family) couldn't save him from a physical illness, Bourdain's dream career (and family) couldn't save him from mental illness.  and i'm thinking of Chris Cornell.  is suicidal depression a long-term effect of drug abuse, even after years of sobriety?  that sounds just about cruel enough to be true.
