I though that Abbott was going to get with the program when he finally called for the shutdown but the fact masks have not been made mandatory tells a lot.  Many people down here will not wear a mask unless absolutely forced to and the only way that's going to happen is if Abbott pushes the issue.

Right now he keeps saying that he's worried, he's concerned..  well, do something then.  He says that he's listening to scientists and doctors, and he probably is.  He's just ignoring what they are telling him and listening to what his wealthy donors are telling him.

I think we need at least a partial re-shutdown and definitely need to enforce masks and social distancing.

2020-06-25 2:05:00 PM
You know, its become more obvious that universal mask wearing is the single most effective way to stop the spread of covid, and it is possible Texas could avoid a complete shutdown -- not to mention widespread and catastrophic suffering and death -- by simply issuing a statewide mandate on wearing masks in public.

However, Texas, therefore Jesus and Freedumb.  So enjoy your plague, cowboys.  Hopefully there will be something left by the time there's a vaccine.  If not, well, nice knowing you.

2020-06-25 2:07:21 PM
Shut down bars and indoor dining out anything that requires you to take off your mask. Or failing that, at least let the cities and counties be more free to shut down and give mask mandates as they see fit.

Reminder that all these counties and cities have political leaders that know what should be done and have been pleading with Abbott for weeks to let them take control of things locally. But Abbott's statewide order explicitly supercedes any local orders and forbids them.

/at least it's Abbott
//Dan Patrick would have tried to force people into restaurants at gunpoint

Since there is growing evidence that covid antibodies may not last longer than a couple of months, that "strategy," such as it is, may be tragically and fatally flawed.  Unless the plan is to let it burn through the population until everyone is dead, that is.

I live out in a very rural area 90 miles from San Antonio.  A month ago we had a total of 6 cases, as of last night it was 58 according to our local health association.  And I'm pretty sure that it's going to get worse.

What is not being taken in to consideration is that a lot of rural people have to go to the bigger cities for doctors and other necessities.  We also have the idiots that have to go to the city to go partying or what ever.  And both of those cases bring it back to spread it around here.  We do have a hospital here but I doubt that they will be able to handle this if any of these cases really go south.  I'm pretty sure that there have been cases send to San Antonio already.

This is exactly what I expected to happen. I'm not sure where we're going from here, honestly. Maybe by the time the bodies in Houston start stacking up like firewood he'll ask businesses to back down to 25% capacity?

The thing is, there's two things he has to contend with:

1) not wanting to pay people unemployment because of a mandatory shut down
2) the freedumb cockus folks who think being asked to wear a mask is like having a cop kneel on your neck

San Antonio Farker here-He was fine until he decided that the he knew better than our Mayor and County Judge, who had done a great job in controlling the outbreak here by mandating a stay at home.  Abbott's order stating that local municipalities couldn't override his order sealed our fate.

Then our a**hole moron of a Lt. Governor suggested that older people should be willing to sacrifice themselves in order to "save" our economy.  Profits over people, the standard GOP platform.  And all hell broke loose again.  We start reopening, despite cases rising, and now we're in full blown disaster mode.

Our County Judge finally called BS on Abbott and mandated masks.  Abbott's response was basically "this could have been done at any time" despite all his bluster that any local order would be illegal.  He STILL won't mandate masks state-wide, insisting he's relying on the "good judgment" of all Texans.

This is all on Abbott.  His lack of leadership, like that in DC, is killing people.  And with July 4 right around the corner, that "good judgment" will be on display again with parties, gatherings, etc.

Second wave?  We're not out of the first wave yet.  It's embarrassing.

You can stop there.

Other Texan farkers, how do you feel about Abbott's actions, statements, and leadership (or lack of)?

I have been ignoring him and his guidelines since March and following the tried-and-true guidelines the rest of the world have been following
:
- we wear face masks whenever we go outside
- we consolidate trips so we are outside for a little time as possible
- sanitizing before AND after we get out of the car (heck, I even wipe every surface I touch on the gas pump!)
- and we started shopping during "senior hours" (early in the morning)

Abbott's guidelines are stupid, are causing an increase of COVID-19 cases... and because the population of Texas is concentrated in and around five counties (Dallas, Harris, Travis, Bexar and El Paso Counties)... and because these five Counties are very blue Counties... all he has to do is blame the leadership of those five Counties for every increase of COVID-19.

This is EXACTLY what most suburbanite "Republcans/Libertarians" in Texas believe.

Another shutdown would be extremely bad. Depending on the spread and noncompliance of individuals, it might not even help.

There were other things that could have been tried in order to preserve the health and livelihoods of Americans, but those took a backseat to wishful thinking and a desire for normality.

This virus is here to stay and will continue to disrupt the economy. Until it goes away, we will continue to live in financial uncertainty. I really hope this doesn't cause you suffering.

This mandate will be useless until it starts getting enforced en masse and with no regard to who people are or thing they are... including skin color.

CSB Time #1: Here in Kaufman County businesses have signs stating masks are mandatory. I have yet to read of ANYONE being told to leave (let alone be arrested) for not wearing a mask.

CSB #2: When our Church reopened in-person services three weekends ago with limited admission (35 out of 105 seats available, but with all the seats in place) and they told people to wear masks. Four people (FOUR!) wore masks: the Pastor, the VP of the Church Council, Mrs. EspiaBoricua and myself. The Pastor and the VP took their masks off during the announcements (end of service, before dismissing people) but we kept ours on all the time.

Four days later an e-mail goes out to the Congregation saying that someone in the service we attended tested positive to COVID-19, and now everyone has to wear a mask and this time is going to be enforced. Next weekend, 60% of the seats had been physically removed so people HAD to sit separately and EVERYONE wore a mask.... except for the teenagers who were confirmed that weekend at the service which was set-up specifically for them (!).

Next weekend (the one which just passed) the Elders decided to make mask-wearing optional again "because that's what the Governor says we can do". Most of the chairs which we removed earlier have remained in storage (read: not in the main Sanctuary).

We (the Mrs. and I) decided that we are not attending in-person services for the foreseeable future.
