With no tourist, nothing at time square will remain in business.

Last year, the company opened up a more modern flagship location two blocks away,

Planned obsolescence. This was as good as an excuse as any.

Well they said that it's not related to COVID but I imagine business was terrible. Why pay rent in two close locations when you know eventually you're going to the one anyway.

the company recently shifted to a limited menu and got rid of all-day breakfast.

THEY DID WHAT?

I thought McDonalds was a property company that got people to run burger joints until the property was worth selling. Either they sold the building, or the lease went up. They have been known to do a complete tear down for a "remodeling".

Two entire blocks to some other three-story glass McDonald's? Thank god Deblasio put up fainting couches along the way. I will file for reimbursement of my worn clutching pearls. The city is dead to me now.

My daughter flew home last week and the first thing she wanted after I picked her up at the airport (at 8:00 PM) was a sausage biscuit. And was devastated to find there was no all day breakfast here, either.

Wow.  Seventeen years.  Practically an American tradition.

Probably have a 20 year lease and it's cheaper to pay out the remaining 3 years.

You see McDonald's.

I see a public bathroom in Rome.

/ I have used the bathroom at that McDonald's

Grinning and conceding the point. I lived around the block, so I could biatch happily without pressing bladders issues.

Midtown Manhattan had about twelve separate McDonald's at one point. I used walk by four of them on my trek from Grand Central to the office. Its more popular than you might think, but I can't imagine the margins are high enough to justify the rent.

I was in Rome about 20 years ago now and visited the Pantheon at around lunchtime. There were about 15-20 clearly American students all sitting nearby with a McD's bag at their feet. I just thought why would you travel 3,000+ miles to the home of pizza, pasta etc and eat farking McDonald's?

I went to a pizzeria nearby for my lunch.

Times Square's Glitzy, Four-Story McDonald's Is Shutting Down After 17 Years

Aren't pretty much all shops in times square more there for the advertising value and don't really turn a profit?

lol, we had an office in times sq, like directly across the street from that good morning america window or whatever. it was great, I had 3-4 consecutive years of NYE slumber/drinking parties, see the fireworks, and watch the morans plaguing the streets, except we had booze, running water and a clean/actual bathroom. and sleeping bags. at one point I was tasked with babysitting a visiting team from our Austin office, and they must have seen whatever is that horrific "bbq" joint so we *HAD* to go there. jfc guys, I could have taken you to a... tens... of places with better ribs, better booze, but no! eh, it was all expensed, we all got drunk, close enough. seriously, I should have dragged them down to Jekyll & Hyde or something more fun.

OR.

just back the fark off a couple streets. my later consulting gig office was at 6ave/32nd. an entire breakfast grill in the farking lobby. an entire Pakistani vegetarian kitchen IN THE FARKING SAME LOBBY. and if that wasn't enough, walk a block or two east and you have not only H-Mart but Woorijip. (also Mandoo but I believe they shut down?)
Woorijip was my life! (which, I mean, the actual word means "my home" so, yeah?)

17,500 square feet in Times Square. Conservatively, it's probably $3 million a month just for the lease. I can see them absorbing the expense just to be there, to test new menu items, etc... but it was never profitable.

...besides, why go to McDonalds for overpriced, tasteless, fast food? Breakfast is the only thing worthwhile, really, and my favorites somehow always make me a bit ill after eating there.

In-and-Out >>>> Rallys/Checkers >>> Culvers >>> Burger King >>>> Shake Shack >>>> McDonalds

Rallys/Checkers is my favorite cheap go-to, but they've really been slacking lately. I want my steak burgers back.

Local burger joints are always good to go to, as well, but pricier. In southeast Michigan, I recommend Basement Burger Bar or Brome.

oh, lawd. about 30 years ago in Ohio, Rally's was A Thing. I honestly can't remember the food, only that it was a treat for us kids (id est, must have been on sale) and of course those hilarious Seth Green TV commercials. fast forward to this farking timeline: last year we started going to Checkers in NE Phila for the cheap fish sammiches and holy amazeballs does subscribing to their newsletter get you constant daily coupons for free order of fries and/or a Frosty (Narrator: you know what he meant) lol!

it still remains sort of hit or miss to try convincing them about serving the fries without that red-colored salt, or at least less of it.
