"This document is not a positive identification," the file says in bold capital letters at the top. "It is an investigative lead only and is not probable cause for arrest.

Before arresting Mr. Williams, investigators might have sought other evidence that he committed the theft, such as eyewitness testimony, location data from his phone or proof that he owned the clothing that the suspect was wearing.
"

Instead the lazy piggies go out and arrest the guy then say "gee the computer got it wrong". F*cking assholes.

Have you tried being richer or more famous?

Or perhaps being more closely related to someone important like a cop or politician?

False ID. The arresting officers should have had the facial photo, compared that and the guy's face and said, at the least, "oops wrong guy". Instead...

Where are you taking my husband?

Google it.

I... These assholes actually said that.

Arrested, yes. Brought in for questioning, no. Technically, they can't detain you with out arresting you, but no one in a position of power checks.

Human skin is a weird problem that computers have. Or rather that people have, when working with computers. Both in creation (modelling and texturing), and interpreting. White people are easy because the contrasts are stark in the way light plays around the face to create shadow and shape. The darker a person's skin, the more subtle the play of light is, the more important depth is, and the less trustworthy the machine. It's a pretty well-known problem.

SF's facial recognition ban is extremely ironic given that so much of the software that is used to facilitate these kind of abuses comes from the San Francisco tech sector. The ban is yet another case of the scum who create externalities exempting themselves from the consequences of their actions.

The Board of Governors of San Francisco have released exactly 0 software products of any kind, and have no control over any business not residing with the city limits.   You may want to check out where the silicon valley actually is.

I'm afraid you will have to try  your irony somewhere else.

Was he Black?  'Cause that's probably why he was arrested.  Cops LOVE arresting Black men.  Arresting them alive means the cops can bring the Black man back to the jail, where the cops control the cameras.  Then they can take their time killing the Black man.

Stop making this complicated.

Unfortunately, judges get to decide what is and is not sufficient evidence when issuing a warrant.

It's kind of their job.

It says they put the guys picture in a photo lineup and he got picked. That's enough for a warrant. The question is whether they should have relied on the facial recognition match to do a photo lineup in the first place.

They put the guy's photo in a lineup and gave it to the person who submitted the video to identify. That's like saying I watched a surveillance video on the internet, which gives me the authority and standing to pick out the perpetrator from a lineup.

Absolutely piss-poor police work.

The Next President will have to spend their entire term, be it 1 or 2, just trying to unfark this country.

Don't expect much in the way of forward progress for something like a solid decade or two.

Remember Saint Ronny Raygun?

We are STILL trying to unfark the nation from his bullshiat.

A lot of people do not have a problem with what happened here. They see it as the system working. He was arrested, he was innocent and he was released. They see this as perfectly ok, until it happens to them. This is why law enforcement is allowed to use known flawed tech

I warned some judges and public policy developers here in Canada about this, and they ignored me. When I tried to explain how AI developers in the room were lying to the legal professionals about how algorithms work, they dismissed me outright. I tried to stop this from happening here (and in Australia, where some of the panelists were from), and they ignored me. One industry guy spent the next 2 hours following me around trying to explain to me that an algorithm is a tool, like a hammer, or screwdriver. Every single appellate level judge in the room believed his false analogy.  :(  I can't even get a paper published about it, because the peer reviewers are so ignorant of the false analogies employed by app developers. They wont even accept a paper that critiques them, as a premise.

So...this is what we can look forward to in the 5 Eyes countries.

If you know anything about photography and how the digital tools work, you become very aware of how slipshod some of the tools are. Google's image recognition search has trouble telling the difference between black people and gorillas - and the patch for it is astonishingly piss-poor - the search function ignores images labelled gorilla. Yes, it relies on keywords to get around this PR problem, not a fix of the actual problem.

More than one camera company had trouble getting its smile recognition software from working with Asians who the cameras insisted were blinking.

The sheer amount of balderdash pumped out by technology firms that their products work correctly is astonishing. Judges, police, executives and politicians are getting flat out lied to.
