How farked up is the world when peoples first question is "new nuke being tested?"

Huh, who knew that a cloud formed by meteorological processes is governed by the same thermodynamic principles as one formed by a nuclear explosion?

Tropopause FTW.

Fark: The Chernobyl reactor 4 accident was in 1986.
Ultrafark: After cleanup of reactor 4, the nuclear power plant continued in operation until December 2000.
Doublesecretfark: gift that keeps on giving 1982-2013...

Chernobyl
Accidents and incidents
September 9, 1982, a partial core meltdown occurred in reactor No. 1 as a result of a faulty cooling valve remaining closed following maintenance. The reactor was repaired and put back into operation after eight months.

April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred at reactor No. 4, caused by a catastrophic power increase resulting in core explosions and open-air fires. This caused large quantities of radioactive materials and airborne isotopes to disperse in the atmosphere and surrounding land. Reactor No. 4 was completely destroyed, and therefore enclosed in a concrete and lead sarcophagus, followed more recently by a large steel confinement shelter, to prevent further escape of radioactivity.

October 11, 1991, a fire broke out in the turbine hall of reactor No. 2. The fire began in reactor No. 2's fourth turbine, while the turbine was being idled for repairs.  The adjacent reactor hall and reactor were unaffected, but due to the political climate it was decided to shut down this reactor permanently after this incident.

February 2013, a 600 square metres (6,458 sq ft) portion of the roof and wall adjacent to the covered part of the turbine hall collapsed into the entombed area of the turbine hall. The collapsed roof was built after the Chernobyl disaster, and was later repaired.

I did not realize those clouds had a specific name when they maxed out.  I figured it was just a flat topped cumulonimbus, but hey, it has a name...

My only concern seeing that would be potential for a nasty storm heading my way.

But hey, I learned something today on Fark.

According to the officials, there was no reason to panic as the unusual cloud is a rare phenomenon "known as an anvil cloud so there was no reason for any worries".

Obviously the writer has never been in the American southwest before if he thinks anvil clouds are a rare phenomenon.

Cumulonimbus? Or Nimbostratus?

My wife had a food item she had to avoid, which was a common medical explanation for an issue she had, Later, they determined it wasn't the usual problem, and that food was back on the menu. Day before yesterday it was in dinner and she said "I'm still terrified on occasion when I eat it, I know better, but that doesn't matter."
...and I showed her this story. Just because you know better doesn't mean the reminder doesn't fill you with dread.

FTH:The huge cloud was spotted in Kiev, Ukraine, just 60 miles away from Chernobyl, which was the site of the worlds worst nuclear disaster in 1986, but officials told residents not to panic

Just like they did during the worlds worst nuclear disaster, when there was reason to panic.

Mock26: Cumulonimbus? Or Nimbostratus?

Cumulonimbus. To be really specific, the anvil topped ones (according to TFA) are cumulonimbus incus.

I saw the picture and immediately thought "well, whoever's under that thing is getting some kind of thunder-boomer." But then, I'm a midwesterner and such storm clouds are hardly reason to freak the hell out. Even if it's over a decommissioned nuclear plant.

GrogSmash: My only concern seeing that would be potential for a nasty storm heading my way.

No need to worry, the article got it wrong. An anvil cloud does not usually portend the beginning of a storm, but instead it's END. As storm clouds build upwards, they eventually hit a ceiling and begin to plane out. This forms the top of the anvil and indicates the storm has essentially stopped growing.

"Locals around the Chernobyl nuke site"

I am thinking that if you willingly live close enough to the Chernobyl site to be considered a "local", you may not be the sharpest tool in the shed to begin with.

I disagree. When a cloud shaped like that has destroyed your life/town once, you're going to be nervous when you see it again. That's called "learning" which is something trumpers don't do.

God: "Watch, when I do this they all scurry around like ants!"

I don't think the Chernobyl accident produced a mushroom cloud,
at least not one that could be seen from any appreciable distance. Just a radioactive smoke plume concurrent with the fire.

Conflating that type of nuclear accident with one that would produce a mushroom cloud shows a lack of knowledge from the populace, combined with a lack of prevalence of those types of storms, apparently.

If I see a cloud like that, first thing I do is pull up my radar app, not to confirm that it's not a nuclear fireball (would be interesting to see what kind of echo that would produce, provided the electronics/power/network survives), but to see what the storm looks like and where it's going.

Well, yes and no.

It means the SoB has topped out.  Its still got a couple miles of active cloud beneath it, and obviously it has enough energy to keep rising, so there is the potential for severe thunderstorms out of it.

That said, a boomer like that is just one indication.  I'm usually looking for evidence of crosswinds, aka two colliding systems, before I get nervous.

The High Plains get those kinds of clouds all the time. It's a herald of a potential supercell that includes severe lightning and thunder, drenching rain leading to flooding, and possibly funnel clouds/tornadoes. I think that's enough to be concerned about.

Silly people, panicking over a brewing thunderstorm. The sky isn't green. Y'all will be ok.

PSA: roll clouds aren't UFOs, either.

My understanding is that it's just another contaminated area at this point.  Living there would suck, but existing there is hardly an instant death sentence.

You just can't drink any local water, eat any local plants or animals, or kick up any dust unless you're in full NBC gear.  But just walking down a decaying asphalt street should be fine.  Except for toxic pollen full of like, Strontium 90 or something, maybe.  Maybe better go in the winter.  The fearless wildlife like wild boars or wolves are probably more directly dangerous than the radiation at this point.  Of course you'd still have to have absolutely all supplies trucked in from outside if you wanted to stay more than a day...
