Using it for Fark and Skyrim

I have two also. one doesn't get used much as it is for online gaming (which I haven't been able to do since building it) and the other I use every day. In fact, it's the main PC I use overall vs my laptop that I hardly ever touch.

Gaming?  I had a Windows XP box until a few years ago when something on the motherboard croaked.  It was a 32 bit Xeon box that I basically only used for games like Carmageddon II and FlatOut 2.

I'd overclocked it something like 25%, so I'm not really surprised that it eventually died.

In our house we have:

My desktop
My laptop
My old laptop (xp)
My wife's desktop
My wife's laptop
My wife's old laptop (xp)

Everything but the XP boxes get used on a weekly basis.

Mr. Izo and I have a desktop PC for each of us, we use them daily, one for business and the other for games.

We also have 2 laptops, which we only use when away from home, generally for work.

I have several.  One in the family room attached to the small TV, used for Youtube and video conferencing with an attached USB webcam, one in my office.

I hadn't used the one in the office much for the last couple of years, instead using my small lightweight laptop in the family room on the couch.  COVID changed this, working from home in my office is more productive and while I use a work-issued laptop with an external monitor, I can switch back and forth between personal and work better when using the desktop for said personal stuff.

Yes, no.

I do almost everything on an iPad these days.

2020-06-23 1:53:23 PM
Yes. I still prefer it over a laptop or tablet. Have it hooked to my 50" TV as a monitor next to the 50" TV I use for, well, TV. I have a PC laptop for most of my gaming these days, except for D&D and Pathfinder.

Not gaming. It has better audio capabilities than my WIn 7 box, and it lets me use TuneIn without downloading their app.

You don't want me to make a list of computers in this house.  Even if I limited it to serviceable systems running Linux or Windows 7 and newer it would be far too long.

My 13 son has a PC that he is on all day everyday.

2020-06-23 1:55:50 PM
Of course. I also have a laptop and two smartphones. Different jobs, different tools.

2020-06-23 1:55:55 PM
Yep, my desktop PC is my main computer, use it for almost everything online and gaming. I have a Tablet I rarely use and I don't do hardly anything online on my phone. It seems I need glasses and I can't get to an Optometrist right now so I can't see the screen well plus I don't like how things are formatted on a phone compared to my PC. Too many years on a PC to swallow the wonky formatting I guess and the excessive battery use is crazy.

Makes sense.  I have a Sounblaster Audigy sitting on the shelf with the Creative Labs Livedrive, been thinking about using up my last 32 bit PCI slot with it, but I don't really need the capabilities.  If anything I need to put a bluetooth transceiver onto the desktop for better wireless headphones, but I don't have one of a new enough standard to do better real-time audio.

2020-06-23 1:56:48 PM
Yep I use it when on the couch. It's basically my T.V. with the option to surf the web. The wife uses the big T.V. and my Xbox for her watching of shows. Works out well, we can hang out together on the couch and aren't stuck watching each other's horrible stuff.

2020-06-23 1:57:50 PM
yep I wfh and use a my desktop every day, the laptop is basically just for couch surfing and remote work.

2020-06-23 1:58:00 PM
Nope, my Win 8 desktop bit the dust a couple of years ago. It's laptops all the way now, baby.

2020-06-23 1:59:32 PM
Only two right now (motherboard on third one died).

1. Main system running Windows 10 Pro
2. Second system running VMWare and two CentOS 6 (soon to be CentOS 7) VMs

I also have a laptop running Windows 10 Pro. That's going to be nuked soon to run Fedora 32 KDE (not a fan of Gnome).

I haven't decided whether to build another desktop or get a refurbished one. I need a new system to run long term VMs. I will probably go with Xen virtualization to run various platforms.

The main system also runs docker, so I can run more virtual systems locally. However, those virtual systems are normally single purpose platforms, and not suitable for general use.

TMI, I know.

Two desktops plus a laptop and various other stuff.

One desktop is my main PC for flight simming and video editing - the last Windows update has killed it.

2020-06-23 2:00:24 PM
3 Media Center PCs attached to TVs in the living room, my office and our bedroom, a high end gaming PC in the office and a half height server rack with a server running a bunch of VMs  and 50TB+ of storage. The server feeds the Media Centers. The living room box and the server are in daily use.

Gaming box in my office and three servers in the basement.  So yes?

2020-06-23 2:10:00 PM
Bought a return alienware about 2 years ago, still use it as a hub for music (flac) an some gaming.  Have a hp omen that I use for telework.  Also have a small dell refurb that I use for financial stuff exclusively, one that can be easily carried/packed

2020-06-23 2:10:32 PM
Yes, both of them for gaming (One hooked up to the TV for the kids, one in the office for me).

2020-06-23 2:13:01 PM
Yes.

2020-06-23 2:15:12 PM
Yep.
It runs on XP64  and hasn't been turned off (except for power outages when the UPS get low) for almost 10 years.
I even clean it when it is running. I take the side covers off and turn on the shop vac and listen to those fans just whir.

I got a laptop, tablet, chrome book and some Apple thing.  I never use any of them unless I'm traveling and then it I take my tablet.

2020-06-23 2:15:34 PM
Yes. Literally every day. One a work machine with dual-monitor display, and the other a VR/gaming powerhouse. Some things just can't be done as economically with a laptop...

I just took delivery of my mac pro tower 2007 I left at mom's. The whole deal weighs as much as a cruise ship anchor.

A: I work from home
B: I'm not a console plebe

2020-06-23 2:30:05 PM
I don't, but my son does.  It's a gaming computer.  Does that count just because it isn't a tablet or laptop?

Only at work. My office lives in fear of data being lost or stolen. So, desktops for everyone.

Still use one as a music server

2020-06-23 2:44:34 PM
I haven't had a desktop since 2008

And I haven't even regularly used my laptop beyond file storage since 2015

Almost everything just makes more sense to do with my phone

Yup, it's the first i7 quad core that I built.  For 10 years old, it's still a very capable machine for video/Photoshop etc. and it has outlived several generations of striped hard drives that were installed.

2020-06-23 2:52:17 PM
Yes, It's my desktop in the living room where I sit and can swivel the chair around to watch TV/Movies.
While the SO has his laptop on the coffee table where he sits.
Seems to work well for us.

I tell a lie. I have a NUC hooked up to a 4k tv for the smartest of smart TVs.

My wife and I both have gaming computers we use pretty regularly. Although I have been using the PS4 Pro more lately.

2020-06-23 2:54:45 PM
Yup, 6 yo Dell reloaded with a 500Gb SSD and 4Tb WdRed.
Also an ancient non-name i3 running NAS software

2020-06-23 2:57:28 PM
I just bought a new desktop last month.  I have another one in the basement that I mostly use to RDP into from work when I need to access something on my own network.  The old desktop that the new one replaced will be set up down there for the kids when I have some time.

2020-06-23 3:00:49 PM
I have a 2012 Mac Pro that I bought as a reaction to Apple announcing the trash-can Mac Pro.  I got it to replace a perfectly operational 2006 model.  This thing is still going very strong, and when Apple kills support eventually, it'll just make a really good Linux machine.

32GB of memory, 6-core 3.3Ghz Xeon, it's still plenty fast enough, and with a 30" display there's plenty of room for browsers.  I really need the internal storage bays though for 8TB drives.

2020-06-23 3:01:18 PM
Yes I use it constantly, on it right now.

2020-06-23 3:04:28 PM
Yes. I use it daily to look at boobies, play games and fark. I am on it right now in fact.

2020-06-23 3:04:28 PM
I use my desktop like 12 hours a day. 3 monitors for work.

I have a laptop from the office that is setup as an RDP machine on my other desk, and I remote into it when I need to do work.

2020-06-23 3:04:36 PM
My desktop computer is my only computer, unless you count my phone.  I've had two computers die of heatstroke, so it's a roomy, well-ventilated case or nothing.

2020-06-23 3:08:00 PM
Of course.

2020-06-23 3:09:41 PM
Give up TRS-DOS? Are you mad?
