I was just thinking about autonomous cars the other day.

I love the idea of dedicated roads for them all controlled by a central computer.

However I did something new for me and related them to path mapping and navigation systems in video games, where the whole environment is at the whims of the developer...and suddenly I lost confidence in autonomous cars.

I'm now a bit less confident about self driving cars outside of dedicated roads.

I'm still not going to trust it until it's on an industry wide unified open sourced platform. Until then I'll be content to walk if I have to.

the biggest issue with self driving cars in the USA is people are going have to accept one of two out comes.

1st.  we can only have self driving cars on roads owned by the US gov such as the interstates and other US routes such as US Rout 1.  And some state owned roads.  With the people in the car able to take over driving on other roads.

2nd.  Laws are going have to be passed to give ownership of all roads no matter how small in the country to the feds or at the very lest state level.

Because if you don't do number 2 whats going happen is you going get small little towns/villages that are going be setting their own rules for self driving cars.  It be a nightmare to keep the cars and software running them up to date with every little change every town/city/village makes to.  I mean what do you do if your self driving car is driving down the road and you enter a town that ban self driving cars form self driving(ie someone has to be in physical control of the car.)

And that not counting all the normal driving stuff each town dose.  I mean there a small village(pop size, land size its bigger then some cities but most of it is woods and bog) near me that you can drive threw the town center in like 5 mins.  but if your a 18 wheeler and don't have to make a stop in the village they don't let you drive threw the village you have to take side roads going round the whole outer edge of the village and adds like 45-60 mins to a trip.

to do self driving cars right you going need a min number of places making changes.  at the min just 52(each state by itself) better if its just 1 at the fed level. I can see states able to pass laws like this.  Could the Feds?

I need to review Total Recalll. There's a part of dreamscape where you can't read fine print. I want to see if that's a thing in the original.

Well, Elon Musk will have them in less than 6 months in the US, so they'll be second.
