One of the arguments I heard (self-described) "moderate" Republicans make for supporting Trump was that he wasn't very smart, but he'd hire the best people.

But good people won't work for him. Speer pointed that out as a major problem with Hitler. Hitler's emphasis on loyalty, his need to be a universal genius, his faith in himself-all those characteristics meant that he didn't want people around him who were smarter than he, better informed, or threatening to his ego in any way. As Speer said, Hitler's "methods of necessity led to weak collaborators for his arbitrary method of choice brought no men with proper qualifications to the right positions" and the "inferiority" of his subordinates ensured that their subordinates would also be "inferior" (Overy 226). Speer draws the conclusion that "A system which makes the selection of the leading personalities dependent solely on the judgment, arbitrary discretion, and whims of the dictators inevitably leads to such results" (Overy 226).

They're out of capable people. That's why they sunk to Romney (a Mormon rather than a Protestant), then to Trump (not even remotely religious). Then Trump hired what was left of their B-team, then burned through them to the C-team and D-team. What's left now is the 5th string of disgraceful noobs that have no tactical skills, experience, or intelligence.

Occam's razor simplifies that a bit... Nobody with any possible combination of intelligence, kindness, and competence would want to work for Trump.

Ever.

Right President, wrong rivals.

PRESIDENT OBAMA (sorry, I never type President with current occupant) retained Robert Gates from the Bush administration.  And after Leon Panetta left the DoD he appointed Chuck Hagel former Republican senator from Nebraska for almost 2 additional years.

It should be readily apparent that when his catch phrase is "you're fired," he doesn't invest too much time screening applicants.

I'm not sure whether it's the authoritive and excessively structured nature of former military types or the fact that trump is a massive *unt.

2020-06-19 5:38:21 PM
"I'll hire the best people!"

Wasn't that supposed to be his selling point? As a businessman, running the country like a business, he'd have the private-sector experience of hiring "the best people."

So, he's run the country "like a business" directly into a recession with high unemployment, and can't hire good people according to his own top staff. Got it.

2020-06-19 5:38:27 PM
There are two ways for picking members of a team. One way, the hard way, but also the more common way, is to find the best people. But to keep them, the leader has to inspire and motivate the to continue working for the team, lest they decide to go elsewhere. (Most people quit a company not because of pay or other compensation, but because of poor management.)

The other way, also a bit hard, but easier than above, is to find the worst people. Find people who are second-last in their law class from the second-worst law school (Cooley Law, anyone?), people who were C-average at best in high school, people who don't have the gumption to make it big. Hire them. Because they're dumb as bricks, have them to something that's iffy, legal-wise. After that, you have them by the balls. Tell them you'll squeal on them to the police for their illegal action unless they do exactly what you want. Now, you have someone that's bound to you and will do whatever you want, because you've basically blackmailed them to do so.

Guess which way Trump works.
