iheartscotch: I helped escort a big snapper across the road the other day. She was hanging out in the middle of the road. I got my square nose shovel and went to see if I could help.

I tried to get behind her to scoop her up with the shovel; but, she wasn't having any of that. Eventually, I used my shovel to scoot her out of the road.

/ she bit my shovel a couple of times, but it was a very successful turtle rescue

Glad you're okay. Those geriatric snapping turtles can be nästii.

luna1580: nah, a 65 pounder is a mere tween in alligator snapper terms. these awesome critters are known to live over 100 years and weigh over 200 pounds.

CSB- i found my first mature gopher tortoise last week, in a beachside parking lot. nearly stepped on him as he crawled out from under my car while i was loading stuff into the back seat.. got him off the lot and into the brush right away.

years ago I pulled off Rt.23 in Sussex Cty NJ USA to help a huge turtle that was walking onto the highway. Luckily a fellow stopped and joined me. I had no idea turtles were dangerous and he explained the damn thing could have easily bit my hand off. He gave it a stick, it bit, and we crossed the turtle to where it wanted to go. He thought I wanted it for soup and was going to help me put it in my car!
