Anyone else amused and confused on how an ad for a penis reduction surgery clinic ended up next to this, even with an ad blocker?  Didn't think that'd be a common problem for the gaming/comic book community.

As a general rule, I don't like cop shows. Until recently, I made one exception.

Yup, same. I don't enjoy the vast majority of cop/CSI/NCIS/etc shows either.

That show was Brooklyn Nine-Nine, an NBC series that just wrapped up its seventh season. It's more of an office comedy than a cop show, which is what I liked about it. Many of its situations, which involve an admirably diverse cast of misfit detectives, could take place in any environment in which a bunch of squabbling pals are crammed into a sardine-tin series of rooms. The police precinct is just a backdrop. Many episodes only vaguely include police work, or they don't include it at all. Main character Jake Peralta's maverick cop tendencies are just an excuse to explore his dysfunctional upbringing and how he's found a better family with his coworkers. Captain Raymond Holt and Sergeant Terry Jeffords quickly go from being authority figures to dual fathers of the whole force. More guarded characters like Rosa Diaz and Holt-both queer and products of environments that refuse to accept that-learn how to open up over time. And so on. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is, at its heart, a show about lovable doofuses learning how to be better people and, ultimately, a family.

Good solid insights into the show and what it's all about, yep. Spot on.

But it's still a show about cops. Not only that. It's devoutly committed to the myth of the good cop

FTA:
Now, with the country consumed by conversations about whether or not policing as an institution is even salvageable, it all seems woefully naive.

I guess "woefully naive" only applies to to a new narrative now, and not a fictional television comedy.  Personally, I would have used it to describe someone who has complete confidence in the warm brotherhood of all their fellow (non-police) beings.  Which I don't think would make for a particularly funny series.

Powell lost the will to use a gun after mistakenly shooting a child carrying a toy pistol, and his redemptive moment is when he overcomes his guilt and is able to open fire on people again.

Maybe not the best example of a good cop just at the moment. His whole arc was always an eyebrow-raiser.

The first time I ever shopped at a Whole Foods I was out of smokes and asked if they sold them.

The reaction from the cashier and other customers would have led you to believe I had raped a kitten.  Still cracks me up.

I'd say the biggest problem with the police today is that many of those cops never grew up with Adam-12 or Dragnet, but instead, COPS and Bad Boys... Brooklyn-99 is a more positive influence, and shouldn't be seen as some effort to gloss over the bad aspects of the police (and in particular, the problems inherent in the NYPD).

If anything, they should tackle those things head on.

They could have an episode, for example, where an officer has Judy pinned to the ground, and Jake yanks the officer off of him, only to suffer repercussions because the union and higher ups make things difficult for him.

They also need to have an episode involving a shooting. Something not cut and dried... like Boyle is the shooter.

Typographical error!

The blog falsely implied that Quinn had slept with Nathan Grayson, a reporter for the website Kotaku, in exchange for favorable coverage of Quinn's game Depression Quest.[18] Grayson never actually reviewed Quinn's games, and Grayson's only article mentioning them was published before their relationship began.[19][20][21] Gjoni later updated his blog post to acknowledge this,[20] saying that a typographical error was to blame

FTA: "Multiple episodes center around main characters detaining suspects for as long as possible while scrambling to pin evidence on them. In real life, this is a terrible practice in which cops regularly lie and try to trick people into confessing to crimes they didn't commit. In season five episode "The Box," Peralta and Holt do exactly that, repeatedly, until the very last possible second, to catch a dentist-turned-murderer red-handed. It's riveting television, a psychological game of cat and mouse that's practically in a different genre than the rest of the show. But when all is said and done, it also suggests that the means justify the ends."

I see I was beaten to the punch, that's what I get for not reading all the replies. That even people who otherwise understand that it was a bullshiat screen for harassing women who dared make games that weren't Call of Duty think there was truth to any of it, aside from maybe the fact that she cheated on him, is frustrating. That and there were/are lots of useful idiots who were fully on board with unironically going "actually it's about ethics in games journalism" who would use this story as an example, nevermind it was completely false.
