Texas Lieutenant Governor, 3 months ago"No one reached out to me and said, 'as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?'

"And if that's the exchange, I'm all in."

So now they're upset that the people they took that survivor's chance on behalf of - while also not locking down or masking up - are dying?

// I thought the GOP was the party of personal responsibility
// it's gonna come out that like 45% of Texans under 25 are not white or something

Can also scold the 70-something President for not wearing a mask, taking coronavirus too lightly, or is this another "blame everything on the millenials" day?

Abbott sentenced Texans to die for his economic bottom line.

Maybe the "angry young" will actually vote this time.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Look, I'm in Texas.  Abbott is a jackass.  But young people here are not taking this seriously.  That fact doesn't change because a jackass said it.  It doesn't change because he or the President are hypocrites.  This irrational backlash simply justifies the stupid behavior of the young.  Turning this into a political issue is counterproductive, no matter who does it.

Come out? Texas is approx. 40% white overall, so youth are probably >60% non-white.  I'm sure it would be easy enough to find the info if you were less lazy than I.

Neither are the old people, like Abbot and Patrick - difference being that it's literally their job to take things seriously. Oh, maybe they're taking it seriously NOW, when actual people are dying, but when the government were being warned about this shiat, they happily ignored science and liberals in favor of Noted Science-Brain-Having Man Donald Trump.

Blaming The Youth for not taking something seriously is like blaming the sun for rising. Young people don't take shiat seriously by rule, so factor that into your planning and maybe don't encourage people (especially young people) to hit the beaches for Memorial Day weekend.

// it's like "why won't he leeeeeeeeeead", but regarding an actual thing leaders should be leading on (public health & safety)

My small town texas county immediately took the pandemic seriously, made a massive effort to reign in the nonsense, required all businesses to go through safety certification and shut everything nonessential down.

Abbot forced us to reopen by claiming only the executive branch of the state had the authority to make those decisions, ruining all the incredible work local leadership did.

F*CK ABBOT.

Yes, 49% Hispanic under 20, but 66% total non-white, to go along with 62% non-white in the 20-40 range.

Not that I think that's at all relevant in Abbott's decision to criticize the young, as I think was the implication of the post that originally raised the issue.  Wasn't he responding specifically to reports that it's spreading fast among the young?  Not sure why he should be criticized for saying the young need to be more careful.  There are plenty of other reasons to criticize him.

Me too, but at least in Austin, most people are taking it seriously, but not enough. 38 new cases today in Comal County south of me, where 4 hour long tube soaks in other peoples urine are a popular activity....

Now:

I'm in Texas as well - young people are taking this VERY seriously, as are people of every age. Everyone is wearing a mask around here.

And yes, it IS a political issue - one side called the others side's virus response a hoax and sent armed morons to enforce dangerous stupidity. Stop trying to pretend the the dividing line between the cautious and the careless wasn't as stark as it was.

I'm also in Texas, and yeah, don't see many people wearing masks, outside of the grocery store, but maybe the behavior might be a little different if state and national leadership was doing more to act like they are taking this thing seriously.

How do you get the young to take it seriously

IDK maybe enforce social distancing and masking, message that we're all this together and that they can save lives

But whatever open everything up than blame the public when people get sick

Abbot decided to open up the state. Any consequence of that is on his shoulders.

In this crappy little backwater county, pretty much only Hispanics and Asians and HEB employees are wearing masks.  But a couple of local business have closed in recent days because employees are sick, so I'm hopefully people are going to start realizing this is for real and change their behavior.

My point with politics is that if Abbott says young people are getting sick and should be more careful, we shouldn't summarily reject that message because of the politics involved.  It's either good advice, or it isn't.
