I once had a student in my English class who wrote his persuasive essay on the existence on Moth Man.  He did a pretty good job of it.

Mothman caused a bridge to collapse, killing 46 people.  He's not only a literal monster, but a figurative monster as well.

True, but unlike (defeated) confederates, we still need to try to placate and mollify Mothman

I'll take it.

The mothman is just a turkey vulture folks see when drunk, but I approve of this effort to confuse future archeologists.

It's about heritage, not engineering disasters

Why does West Virginia, a state that seceded from Virginia to remain in the union, have Confederate statues?

It's almost like it's now about something else and not the actual Confederacy. I can't quite put my finger on what that would be.

Did Mothman really cause that bridge collapse

Or was he just trying to warn people, but we did not speak Mothmannic

Also I like the cut of that one woman's jib.

Hmm. Do animistic/animalistic cryptids count as furries...

On a slightly more serious note, why does West Virginia, a state that exists solely because the people there thought the Confederacy-led government in Richmond were a bunch of traitors and seceeded to stay with the Union, have ANY statues glorifying the confederacy...

Rhetorical question, of course.

I think mothman is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.

We went to the Mothman Festival the summer when Fallout 76 came out. Bethesda was there handing out cheap trinkets. Was quite the interesting festival anyway.

Mothman never commit treason against the US, as far as I know.

We should have more statues of cryptids.
I know what various historical figures looked like, but I would like to know what a crazy sculpture thinks of the Jersey Devil or the Skunk Ape.

I don't see why you gotta sell drunken turkey vulture sightings short like that.

My neighbor buddies were telling me about this last night.

I had never heard of the "Mothman" mythos so was extremely confused as they blathered on as if it was common knowledge until I pinned them down to tell me exactly WTF that was.

It was like when someone was trying to describe South Park to me before I had seen it.

It's this sinking feeling that your friend has finally lost their f*cking mind.

Is his real name Arthur? That would be awkward.

Seriously. The Point Pleasant statue is metal as fark, but I thought Mothman was big and fuzzy with no arms and no head.
That's all part of the charm. (Or the pants-shiatting horror.)

Flatwoods monster finds all humans equally inferior and has never committed treason against the United States.

Stonewall Jackson helped free a lot of slaves.  He used to buy off slaves and give them work to pay for their freedom ( to make it legal) prior to the war.  They stayed with him after freedom for room, board, and education.  He's not a good example of a "Confederatey" Confederate. He did a lot of good despite picking the losing side. He paid for it with his life.  His family was against him fighting for the south.  They continued education and housing the poor of all races while he fought int the war and after.   I can see leaving his statues and family legacy in Weston, WV (his hometown).  Not that Weston is much of a booming city anymore.  If you touch that, you are truly not paying attention.

However, I have never understood the Stonewall and other Confederate monuments at the state capital.

As for the Mothman, I have no idea why you'd want a statue of it at the state capital either.  I am not sure he was ever sighted in Charleston.  That sounds dumb to me.  Leave him at Point Pleasant.

We would rather have a Don Knotts statue. How about Steve Harvey?  He's even black.

Stonewall Jackson was born there, and lived there before the war. It otherwise doesn't make much sense.

Funny memory - back when I was a churchgoer (I got better), I was at a gathering where one of the pastors started talking about the evils of popular culture, as they do.

He brought up South Park, and was starting to go off about how they kill a kid in every episode when I said, "It's Kenny".

"What?"

"They kill Kenny."

Then another guy chimed in, "Yeah. In every episode they kill Kenny."

The pastor dropped the subject pretty quickly with an "Oh ... huh."

I could tell he was amused.

One of the top three things I've done in the game. IF i encountered him.

See, this is why I need to be a rich man.  C'mon George Soros, make me rich!

Then I'll put a crew together and secretly replace all of the Confederate memorials in West Virginia with statues of people laughing and pointing, with the brass plate caption of "You suckers live HERE?"

I know a woman who moved to WV a few years ago. Now, she is dear to me, like a better mama than my own, and I trust her with most shiat. But she swears straight up and down she saw the mothman at one point. It wasn't fun, she saw his shadow, it was ominous. Fine. I think she is full of shiat about it, but the tale has stuck with me.  It's not that interesting, his shadow flashed across her yard, that is in the middle of nowhere, at night, but the way she tells it is freaky. Anyway, that's all I have to contribute.

It's definitely weird but it will be much better than the racist statues. Plus the idea of mothman statues would be pretty cool.
