Kudos for mentioning Portal and Gorguts.
Brujeria is Fear Factory with friends, so choosing them for Mexico is questionable. I'd go with The Chasm instead. Their brand of blackened death metal is unique and mysterious, and their vocalist\guitarist was the brains behind THAT Incantation album

For the Netherlands, Within Temptation deserves the win, but I think they should have mentioned Delain alongside Epica, for 3 major symphonic metal bands.

I've actually seen Portugal's Moonspell, one of Epica's opening acts when they came here to St. Louis.

I did recently start listening to more Scorpions, putting them in my music library and not just turning up the radio in the car if they came out.  And just recently noticed that they've been around since 1965!

it's easy to write them off but there's treasures galore in that back catalog, especially the first two albums. For me the sludgy doom of "Animal Magnetism" stands out and was the track that made me go "woah, there's a little more to this band than i thought."

Dr Jack Badofsky: Metallica #1?  I don't think that's been true for quite some time now.  A decade or two.

It isn't a list of top bands, it's a list of each country's best metal band. I dont think they have to be current. Looks more like they are deciding based on influence (can anyone argue with Ozzy-era Sabbath for England?)

By that rubric, I cant think of any band from the US who can beat Metallica.

For Sweden, it should have been Monolord. Those guys are heavy AF.

\Wholeheartedly agree with Poland, though Vader is a close second

Booooo, Orphaned Land should have been there for Israel. I like Within Temptation but Epica should have made it as the Dutch group. Nightwish is Finland's top group, but I can sort of accept Children of Bodom. Surprised to see Rhapdosy taking the top spot for Italy rather than Lacuna Coil but both are permissible. Celtic Frost took Eluveitie's rightful slot for Switzerland.

They got Black Sabbath and Sepultura correct.

Alphax: For the Netherlands, Within Temptation deserves the win, but I think they should have mentioned Delain alongside Epica, for 3 major symphonic metal bands.

I don't know why I can't get into Delain more. I thought their first album was pretty damn outstanding for an initial go of it but what I've heard since hasn't lived up to the initial promise they showed.

Saw Delain when they opened for Nightwish and they said it was some guy's 200th Delain show. You just know that guy has an altar to Charlotte Wessels in his basement and is creepy as fark, I keep expecting to see some story about how a lunatic fan killed her or some crap like that.

Alphax: I've actually seen Portugal's Moonspell, one of Epica's opening acts when they came here to St. Louis.

Must have seen them on the same tour. Moonspell didn't really do anything for me, though I do remember somebody posting something on here a while back that I liked by them.

For anybody who hasn't seen it yet, find some time to watch Global Metal. The same guy who did Metal: A Headbanger's Journey did another metal doc where he went around the world and spoke with metal bands from different countries, getting into how their culture affected their own versions of metal. The entire thing is up on YouTube for some reason actually. I'm not going to say you'll have an epiphany or anything like that but it is a neat little way to kill some time.

Delain has gotten heavier in the last two albums, and I strongly recommend both.   2016's Moonbathers, and 2020's Apocalypse & Chill.

Oops, didn't see this earlier.

Check out the Winds of Change podcast. I don't think they'll be able to nail it down with a solid "yes" but the premise that the Central Intelligence Agency was behind Winds of Change is entirely plausible.

Wrong. The correct answer is Lacuna Coil.

Wrong. The correct answer is Lacuna Coil.

That would have been my choice, but I haven't listened to Rhapsody of Fire so I can compare them.

I also like the new band Volturian, who just put out their first album in April.  Some commenters describe them as an Italian version of Sweden's Amaranthe.

Sabbath did release 13 in the last decade. Much like Metallica, it can't be compared to their previous work. Metallica peaked in the 1980s, Sabbath in the 70s.

I was disappointed in Canada's showing on that list.

Glad Bodom took Finland.

Sweden, I get Opeth is more mainstream but my vote goes to Amon Amarth.

And Canada I'm all for Unleash the Archers. They have an excellent cover of Northwest Passage, but here's one of their originals:

No matter what they turned into from The Black Album onward, those first four absolutely give them the spot.

/Although a special award should be given to the engineers who spliced Lars' drum tracks into what they became on each record

I'm still taking Nightwish.

They're the best selling Finnish musical act of ANY genre outside of Finland.

Not a terrible list.  A few correction I 'd make but it's subjective anyway

Canada:  Voivod

Ireland: Altar of Plagues

Italy: Fleshgod Apocalypse

Singapore: Rudra
