Oh no a tween novel based movie that Disney didn't shelve for later released had a bad review omg!
It sucks for the fans of the series.but with the exceptions ofharry potter and hunger games the majority of tween novels translated to good films is pretty low.

Looks like it'll be a bit of a repeat of what happened with A Wrinkle in Time.

The book really is good.

It is actually a preteen or Young teen book series. Artemis is 12 in the first book, and the main premise is that he starts off as an obsessed, ruthless, brilliant kid, and during the books, grows into a good guy.

Disney got super lucky with Marvel and Pixar. Their other effeorts are decidedly mixed.

Coller set up a great world and premise and dealt with it well once, but had no ability to do anything else with it.  As soon as a character arc or plot point was finished the only choices were reset button or death.

But yes, Artemis as an actual outright villain protagonist for the first book was a really interesting change of pace.  And it honestly made his character growth all the more rewarding I think.

I'm sure that was the boardroom idea.

It likely could have been, but it looks like they decided to tweak the story in committee and the "none of us is as dumb as all of us" factor came in to play.

" Okay, love the story, big fan, but can I suggest a minor tweak?  Let's not make the kid a villain.   Oh, and can we put the father in the film instead of just referring to him?  Bonnie you had something too?"
"Yes Bob, thanks.  There's no black people in this film, can we token this up?  Oh oh, and maybe we can introduce a little cricket that acts as his Artemis' conscience.  And change the setting to space."
"Great Bonnie!  Since we're adding a talking cricket, I've got this character I've been toying around with, an extreme, radical skateboarding dog..."

Either boardroom, or those focus groups seeded with people who have no idea what's going on.

So it's Young Sheldon except the kid is forever annoying into adulthood?

No better way to turn off fans of a book series that to screw up the movie based upon it.    See: Eragon, Percy Jackson and etc,

Except Artemis Fowl's been out for close to 20 years, and Artemis doesn't stay annoying - he actually LEARNS from things. And learns how to work with others, and how to respect them. I really enjoy the series. It's fun, clever, amusing and not unrelentingly obnoxious.

Artemis Fowl is not a franchise large or popular enough for Disney to spend the money on a campaign of blaming a vocal minority of online bigots for the films' poor reception and box office.

The author of Eragon screwed up his own series. First book pretty good, after that meh.

I have been tempted to get Artemis Fowl. Curious to see if I could decode the message in the book.

There might not be worse people in the world than "the book is better than the movie" crowd, particularly when reviewing the movie in a rating system where not all movies have a source book.

OK, perhaps warmongers and murderers and systematic oppressors and racists and classists and sex abusers and offenders and Tom Hanks are all worse, but other than pointless comparisons of grand scale, I can't think of a more useless assertion than "the book is better"

fair point for Eragon but nothing in the book went bad as what they did to the movie.

I turned it off when they insisted Butler be called Dom, Domovoi or a variation thereof. It just... Looks like they kept character names and threw out the book.
