Wow. They even put pictures of black guys in jail.

That's just the ankle monitor.  The jail is overcrowded.

The jerks who test spray the cans to see if they work made it necessary.

What was the attrition rate for those items vs. the others?

People steal cosmetics like crazy, but in my experience it's white teens.
That said it's been about two decades since I worked in a retail store.

Pygmalion effect. People will live up OR down to your expectations. I'd like to know the arrest rate for meth-heads and heroin-seekers who happen to be white.

It's necessarily higher, because they're more likely than black meth-heads and heroin seekers to survive their police encounters long enough to get arrested in the first place.

My Smith's put in one of those special areas with its own checkout a year or so ago, and home depot had one for tools forever. You think they did that because they are racist?

It's definitely a high theft category.

It's not a necessary staple to purchase, like food, so people would have to budget disposable income (if they have any) to buy. It's something that is relatively expensive so people have qualms about spending that money on something that isn't necessary. It's a high-desire item because there is that psychological thing imposed by society where we force women to feel like they should "put on a pretty face." Lastly, it's all small items that are very easy to conceal with minimal risk.

I'm pretty sure those racist bastards were just doing it to be racist.

It's not like any of that stuff is shoplifted.

And it not like they would have any idea of which products are likely to be shoplifted?

I'm sure it because they would rather have to open locked cabinets and stand around to relock them.

KarmicDisaster: I think that if you have an item, and the theft rate is so high that you can't make a profit on it, then you should stop carrying that item. They have computerized inventory, they know which items have too much shrinkage.

And in the end, this is likely the outcome. Walmart will tell customers to order it from Walmart.com instead.

Good question. Walmart says the theft rate was higher, and they would know about shrink with their inventory numbers over the years.

But... Walmart won't provide the numbers.

Weird, huh?

I guess it was partly the decision of the local Walmart to a degree. No hair products under lock where I live. Makeup, lotion, razors,  are in a little corral where you can't take in a cart and its monitored with cameras and paying at exiting it, hair dryers recently got locked up,spray paint, and automotive bulbs are under lock.

They have the baby formula locked up too, it isn't a racial thing, people just steal it. Just stop carrying stuff that is just going to get stolen to the point you can't make a profit if you aren't allowed to lock stuff up.  Locking up just products for Black people is obviously racist.

TheGreatGazoo: PerpetualPeristalsis: It's an interesting lesson in how racism is woven so deeply into people's thought that even when one is articulating a move meant to condemn racist ideas, one falls into thinking of a particular 'race' as the base or norm, and everything else as an exception:  who decides which hair products are "multicultural"?

I barely have enough hair to comment on it, but generally things like relaxers and products meant for 'black hair'.  "Black hair" generally has to be treated differently than 'white hair' to look and behave the way the owner wants it to look.  They can't get away with the $3 bottle of generic shampoo that I use.

But the point is this:  What makes "black" hair multicultural?  Why isn't straight, cornsilk hair multicultural?  It's just systemic bias.

Razor cartridges are a high theft item. They are locked because lots of them are stolen, period.

Or just tagging in-store.

The one "this is weird" experience I had was years ago when I was in New Mexico. Way out in the middle of nowhere I stopped at a gas station and the pump handle was padlocked. An old guy who looked Native American came out to the pump, unlocked it, and stood there about 2 feet away from me the entire time to make sure I was pumping gas into the car. I don't know if I was on a reservation or near one, but he explained that people would put the gas in mason jars or other containers to huff it. His response was to make sure 100% of the gasoline sold was going into a fuel tank.
