Megathuma: Okay, "starring the current day NYPD" cracked me up.

It was on cable earlier tonight and I watched that scene again.  "We just have to make it to the fog.  Oh shiat, the fog is tear gas"

I saw this yesterday afternoon, and that got the biggest laugh from me.

But the whole thing is great.

The original teaser trailer for Fifth Element was all dark slow and mysterious and none of the bright bombastic tempo of the actual movie so while I love the movie now I couldn't parse it the first time through.

Yeah, I gave it a skip in theaters. Caught it when it was home released... and just loved it.

Which is why I had zero interest in it when it first came out, and only discovered what it was really like on cable.

My favorite bit outside the NYPD line.

the idea of Honest Trailers is ok, but jeez they're WAY too long-winded. Damn, get it over with already.

"So there's this film. And it has this weird blue alien opera singer in it. And she's played by the director's wife at the time.

And he met her when she was 12 and he was 29, and they started dating when she was 15. And she was the inspiration for the character of Mathilda in this other film he directed called Leon.

Oh, and during filming, he dumped her for Milla Jovovich."

"What do you call this film?"

"The Aristocrats."

It never really dawned on me until watching the Honest trailer last night that the hero and the main active villain never even met on screen which is for the best as with Oldman and Willis on the same screen, there might be so much ham that it would turn away our Jewish brethren.

The video compares the hero's journey of Corbin Dallas in this to the hero's journey of Luke Skywalker in A New Hope...

... who also never meets the antagonist on screen ( unless screaming No from the other side of a hangar is meeting someone ).

Eh, Vader and Luke in the Death Star Trench together was close enough.

Mathieu "Mugger who wears a picture of the hallway on his head to trick Korben" Kassovitz , director of La Haine, it was made 25 years ago but very relevant today.

Yep, but what an adaptation! I mean, could you actually imagine telling your 12 year old self: "Hey, that semi-lame part of Heavy Metal with the taxi driver? Yeah, some day that will become an entire movie, only less porny".

Megathuma: Okay, "starring the current day NYPD" cracked me up.

The trailer was good, but that was gold.

I saw a Fark post years ago about a movie where not only do the protagonist and antagonist never meet, neither is ever even specifically* aware of the other's involvement in the plot.

I've spent a long time trying to remember what that movie was and now I think this may have been it.

* Zorg sends his henchman to replace Dallas, but only because Dallas's status as the contest "winner" makes a convenient cover.

I loved The Fifth Element it's one of my most loved ever films. Romance, sci fi, action, aliens, intrigue ! Also an incredibly beautiful Mila Jovovich just kicking ass the whole way through.
