Article doesn't cover it, but it looks like the inventor put a filter (charcoal?) to deal with the stinky aspect.  Agreed, cool if weird device.

Bad enough in previous times, sewer gas is an excellent carrier for the 'rona virus..  sewer rats and roaches pass it along too..

I've worked on the top of 40+ story skyscrapers and the sewer vents up there need to be avoided unless you want a nasty headache.  We even put up a windvane so we knew which sections to avoid.

This invention has one other problem.  The increased pressure from a fire on another floor can empty the trap filling the pipe with hot gasses. There is a reason there are fire valves in the sewer vents on tall buildings.
