I have no logical reason to hate Bono other than he is Bono. What a cock.

Taking part in YouTube's virtual 'Dear Class of 2020' series, Bono described the US as "a dream that belongs to the whole world."

Does anyone in the Class of 2020 know who Bono is?

I saw them a few years back and was surprised how much I enjoyed the show. The music they put out is mostly solid, though they do hype the hell out of it.

He is continuing to pave a path to the next level of annoyance. And the number and quality of people  following that path does not speak well of him.

I agree with a lot of what he says, but it still annoys me when he says it, and makes me question my choice. Reflection is a good thing in most instances.

There is a performative quality to his virtues that I find repugnant. Being a better person is supposed to be for your benefit, not for the edification of your targeted market demographic.

Even if he is right, non-Americans lecturing Americans on how to be American is arrogant privilege to the tenth power.

America: "Let's bring American-style Democracy, Liberty and FREEDOM to the rest of the world - we are the shining beacon!"

The rest of the world speaks its mind.

America: "Shut the fark up, rest of the world - who told you to speak?!"

Aaaaand scene.

I try to be sure my patriotism is aspirational. I'd prefer to pursue how great the country can be rather than focus on what we already achieved, because the gap in where we are and where we should be is far too wide.

But I noticed back when the lead from Simply Red was preaching at us that I need to fight my instinct to point out that some of the best things about British civics were imported and adapted from us. I have no idea why, but I find it easier to accept criticism from virtually any other country, even France, than from Brits and the Irish.

/But if you're a taffy, come at me bro!

You know how white Americans (especially rich white Americans) are supposed to take this time to listen?  Since as a white American (especially a rich one) even though we can see the problems and relate to them we don't understand them?

Bono is white.  Bono is rich.  Bono isn't American.

No. Not it is not. Being a better person is explicitly for other people, not your own personal reward.

People really need to read the lyrics and think about what a song is about before committing to it. Beautiful Day is not a happy song.

My kids and I created a custom character for our Pandemic board game called Bono. He can travel between cities with three cubes as an action and can also (as an action) hold a benefit concert in a city which will pull one cube from each connected city to that city. If this results in more than three cubes in the host city, those cubes are removed from the game (not put back in the tray). Bono must discard the matching city card to do this action.

And while we obviously have our issues with racism here in the U.S., Europe still has to deal with it's own troubles regarding racism.

I get your point but disagree. Being a better person for the behalf of others leads to martyr complexes. I limit the number of people whose opinions I allow to affect my self image. I have to know enough about their lives to know that their opinions are relevant and their judgements are valid. Trying to make everyone else happy based on their own metrics is a path to madness in my opinion.

Europe nearly fragmented because they let in 100,000 people the US considers to be white people. That's about a normal year for the US.

Europe is fine with admitting black people, so long as they stay in France's overseas departments.

You know what's worse than auto-tune? Acapella auto-tune.

Did they strip all the backing tracks out or were they just so low I couldn't hear them?

I worked for an Irish company for a long time.  Met my wife over there (she grew up in Glasnevin, a couple of blocks from Bono), and still have lots of friends there.  We are moving back at some point.

Anyway, there ain't no Bono hate in the world quite like the Irish Bono hate.
