Which is crazy, since there has been other forms of protests in our history that were also considered un-American.  Like all those "commie-hippies" who protested the Vietnam war.  Granted, that is the current place we're at.  I'm just pointing out no matter what the subject, protesting in America short of wage increases is un-American.  So there you go, protest bad things, un-American; protest not making more money as a union worker, American.

/okay, there are also protesting against normal things like pets, and eating meat, that just illogical.

The irony being is our country is built on protesting.  Protesting, riots, and vandalism was the catalyst to the revolutionary war.  The above mentioned actions caused the british to start attacking coastal towns and that caused the people to take up srks against the monarchy.

Over stamp taxe increase which evolved to taxation without representation.

It is in the DNA of the USA to protest.  It's what founded this country.

Two things changed.

The peaceful protesters after the first few days have been savvy about looking for looters and white supremacists in their ranks, and have either subdued them for the police or have both recorded and called the police on them specifically. My guess is the ones that want to loot have either given up, or most have been arrested at this point.

The police seem to also be tired of being recorded doing terrible things that turn viral on the Internet, and the protesters have been left mostly alone. Constantly treating every protest like a riot is both expensive, uses a lot of OT, and distracts the police from doing their actual jobs.

Not threadjacking - replying to the awesome quotations that have been used for the civil disobedience threads. And also as a "Thank you" to ZZ9 plural and others, for all the great links, found in real time.

Some quotations I like. They guide me regularly, but this selection is, IMHO, really useful for white people who are trying to work for social change in the midst of the pandemic and the corruption and the police violence of 2020.

"It was this misinterpretation that caused Nietzsche, who was a philosopher of the will to power, to reject the Christian concept of love. It was this same misinterpretation which induced Christian theologians to reject Nietzschean philosophy of the will to power in the name of the Christian idea of love. Now, we've got to get this thing right. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anaemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice."
-Martin Luther King Jr. (1986). "A Testament of Hope." Harper and Row: New York, 247.

"The personal is political. There is a deep relationality that links the struggles against institutions and struggles to reinvent our personal lives, and recraft ourselves."
-Angela Y. Davis. (2016). "Freedom is a Constant Struggle." Chicago: Haymarket Books, 106.

"Then do you think there is something to facts?"
"Of course. but facts can only lead us to visions. Some of us, at least, were born to see visions."
-George Bowering. (1983). "Burning Water." General Publishing Ltd.: Toronto, 15.

Everything the power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard the Earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours....From childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves."

― C.S. Lewis, The Case for Christianity (YOINK from internet).

"This is what makes it possible, for example, for graduate students to be able to spend days in the stacks of university libraries poring over Foucault-inspired theoretical tracts about the declining importance of coercion as a factor in modern life without ever reflecting on the fact that, had they insisted on their right to enter the stacks without showing a properly stamped and validated ID, armed men would have been summoned to physically remove them, using whatever force might be required."

He is said there was no excuse for the cops even rookies to be complicit in Floyd's murder. He is black, and he thinks a lot of people are riding the coattails of wanting change. He sees it as another trend. He believe people are genuine if they continue to work with organizations or groups that demands change, and not just go protest.  He also grew up in Milwaukee.

Yeah I was in the NG ... shiat, way too long ago (when did I get so old...?) & at least once a year we had to do a 2-4 hour block of instruction to our platoons on what an illegal order was & how/why to refuse it (we also spent weeks (over the years) in ROTC going over & over that).  "Just following orders" is NOT going to cover your ass, at least under the UCMJ.

Refusing to follow an order 'is' a really big deal (very potentially career ending), but it was drilled into us over & over that 'this' is what our military is built on & blind obedience isn't the way to go.

/one of the better ways of questioning an order was to ask for it in writing.  Doing so would be essentially waving a BIG red flag in front of whoever told you to go do 'x' as you're essentially collecting evidence for the upcoming court martial.  By asking for them that way it was supposed to let the issuing officer rethink just what he/she was telling you to go do
//of course if it 'was' a legal order then you're pretty much farked...but you can look at yourself in the mirror

I'm old enough (on Medicare), and moderately vulnerable, but couldn't stand it any more. My SO is very vulnerable, so couldn't go, but I was there. Based on far too many other protests, tens of thousands would be an undercount. Probably, given how it was all the hell over*, hundreds of thousands.

* I joined a march on H St. Wound up near 9th and Constitution. The crowd started moving again, but even with a mask, I was *not* going under an underpass, so headed back the other way... and there was *another* large march on Pennsylvania Ave.

I made sure to show to be near the federal security, police, and DEA whenever the march passed them, to show them the back of my sign: The Oath is to the Constitution, NOT to the Orange Hairball.

stuffy: Like so many stupid things. Racism is not an American exclusive.

America is different in the sense that we project our exceptionalism to the point of forcing it on other countries militarily and pretend we're better than other countries.  One of our biggest things is that we tout freedom, but if people are being oppressed is everyone actually free?  The other thing is we act like we're morally superior to everyone else because of all these things.

Sure if we want to drop the pretense we're some bastion of equality and greatness, I'm fine with that.  Other countries and places around the world don't try to hide it.  They don't try to assert their dominance on the world stage while pretending how great they are.

Basically, we're that perfect nuclear family, god fearing, bible thumping, everybody is amazingly happy, and everyone on the block aspires to be us.  We constantly talk down on others because the gays, and how because we pray we're better than everyone else.  But behind closed doors dad beats mom and on saturday nights can be found at the local park bathrooms sucking dick for fun.

Yes racism is around a lot of places.  That doesn't make it ok.  It also is a skeleton in our closet that greatly reduces our standing in the world because we act so superior and talk about how everyone else should be like us and look down on them for not being us while treating our own people like shiat.

We're no better than india.  It's cool.  That makes everything good.  We shouldn't worry about it.  We shouldn't change it.  We treat our own citizens like they do in India.  I'm glad that's out in the open, maybe we can stop pretending we're the greatest on the world stage now that we've admitted we're no better.

That whole department needs to be fired from the top down.

I'm sure that the NG could fill in for a while.  Anyone who wanted to reapply could do so but would need to be 'thoroughly' vetted before the rehire (and to keep things from getting completely out of control, they could be rehired at their old rank & pension level).  Anyone not rehired would have their police powers stripped from them for 'x' (open to negotiation) years so they couldn't just move a town or two over & get rehired.

Biden and Obama were great because they are both so good at talking to kids. They like kids. You can't fake liking kids. And talking and moving at kid speeds requires so much more focus and empathy than talking to adults.

You should see more of America.

Or maybe ask your black friend.

I've seen enough to know it well. Oddly enough, the liberal parts are the most racist and most likely to laugh it off. Tell me again, which presidential candidate had a chance to stop George Floyd's killer in his tracks long ago? Does her affiliation had as much vitamin D as the governor and mayor?

Racism is racism, regardless of party. Racism at one point wasn't divided by party lines. Republicans and the Southern Strategy decided to cater to racists. Now it's practically one of the planks in their platform they're not disingenuous about.

You can pull your BSAB bullshiat all you want, only one party is actually interested in neutering the Civil Rights Act. We have video footage of racism by conservatives... you have words.

Show us evidence and footage of this 'racist liberal' or kindly fark off to whatever backwoods shiathole you crawled out of.

I was told that we're supposed to believe literally anything that makes Trumpers look bad no matter how unlikely it actually is.

This seems like circular logic/self fulfilling prophecy:

"You're holding things in your hands that you've been holding all day like water bottles, we've decided this is now a threat.  Time to go."

This is going to be a war of attrition in the sense that there are hundreds of thousands of people protesting.  Without calling in army there is only so many 18 hour days these cops can do standing around in riot gear before they start to crack while the protestors can just rotate in and out.

Let them burn themselves out with this routine.  Red bulls and monster can only get them so far.

Police with a solid 40 feet of room claimed a fence had been moved 5 feet and moved in.

no outright beatings or full charges, but they went further than the fence and shot gas.

So no, no reason. they wanted to start something, they didn't get it.

It's a little disingenuous given that there is video footage concerning the multiple sequences of fence movement.  One could debate that it was a bait for the protestors for sympathy, one could also debate that it was a bait for the police to react with flashbangs for sympathy.

I just do not see how anybody could debate that. Maybe it is because I know about the history of fences being set up in the middle of streets by police. Those fences are not scared. Those fences are not private property the police are tasked to protect. Those fences are not even protecting anything.

Those fences are only there, because they are accompanied by city bylaws that tell the police they can set up the fences and then begin arresting anyone who tries to move them. And the ability to arrest activates the use of force.

There is no play for sympathy involved. The fences are a trap that changes to city bylaws created throughout the 1990s. This book will help you to understand how the police use those fences, in the 90s, and I can give you more citations if you want to know how their uses evolved over the 2000s.

Coal miner union organizers are Big Magic. When they show up, people listen, because they have survived murder attempts, and held the hands of cave-in victims, and there are always people without insurance dying from their livelihood, and those organizers are helping them until the bitter end. I've enjoyed seeing people singing and dancing, caught a few good speeches in there too

The mayhem catches eyes but what's happening now moves the heart

Two things changed.

The peaceful protesters after the first few days have been savvy about looking for looters and white supremacists in their ranks, and have either subdued them for the police or have both recorded and called the police on them specifically. My guess is the ones that want to loot have either given up, or most have been arrested at this point.

The police seem to also be tired of being recorded doing terrible things that turn viral on the Internet, and the protesters have been left mostly alone. Constantly treating every protest like a riot is both expensive, uses a lot of OT, and distracts the police from doing their actual jobs.

Nah, they're just tired of beating people and need a day off.

Please be extremely careful.  My folks were vulnerable/very vulnerable, and due to a required doctor's check-in (chemo related), they were exposed.  One ultimately didn't make it.  As big as these events are, and as meaningful as they may be, there are enough supportive actions that can be taken from the safety of your home.

TheGhostofFarkPast: Why is Seattle escalating? Again for no reason cops start causing riots

From the link earlier in the thread - it appears to be centered around a double barrier that was set.  Two sets of fencing with a couple of feet between them was presumably set by the police.  After a few folks hopped the fencing, and were sent back to the other side, the group itself began moving the fencing until there wasn't a gap.  They then apparently moved all of the fencing a few more feet.

Over the loudspeaker in the videos, you can hear the police requesting that they move a few feet back from the fence so they could reset it to the original position.

Essentially, two groups played chicken over fence position, and one side lost in the short term, the others will likely lose in the long term.

Countless millions will be made wasting hours debating whether or not the fence position standoff was peaceful or not.

Secret Service with long duffle bags and badges marked "United States Secret Service Special Operations Counter Sniper Team" heading into the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute building a block north of White House.

Well yeah. Their job us to make sure that anyone who uses this as cover against the President is stopped. This protest was expected to happen, they have to be prepared. Do you think the President goes anywhere without a counter-sniper team in place? Or that any large planned thing happens in the area without them being there?

Seriously, they are not worried about the protestors, looters or even any casual rioters.

the prez is in the WH probably in the bunker and surrounded by fences and snipers and guards and dogs etc. why would they need snipers on the roof of that building over a block away?

Because if someone tries to take advantage of the protests to gain access to the area to cause carnage they have a bead on it.  It's called overlook, the point is to gather intelligence.  As much as I dislike trump this is nothing to worry about.  Even in a calm protest there is chaos and their job is to protect the president.

I'm personally against coal, oil and gas, but the sentiment of "burn all the things" really gets people's attention.

You can protest peacefully all you want, but until heads are splitting and you can feel the heat of the flames, no one cares.

The biggest problem is, is that this current movement has no leader, no unified voice, no list of demands beyond better police accountability.

We need a protesters union.
We need a unifying voice.
We need a list of demands that no rational person could vote against.

I do fear, that this unrest will dissolve without these things.

Until the famine, then things will get hairy again.

I went to parties in the suburbs "country" where I grew up as a teenager in a town of about 50,000 people. I also went to those same parties in the projects. Because I came up in both places. And in both locations, underage kids were drinking, smoking weed, basically just behaving like teenagers. But I'll give it to you straight: When the cops pull up to a bonfire out in the country, the kids don't move a muscle. Because they all know nobody is going to jail. When your parents likely know the sheriff, the prosecutor or the judge, your mom and dad get called. You get in "trouble" at home. On the other hand, when cops pull up to a party in the projects, people run and scatter because they know they're going to jail. They know they're getting fined, beat-up, or even shot. I saw that difference first hand.

DeathByGeekSquad: Greil: TheGhostofFarkPast: Why is Seattle escalating? Again for no reason cops start causing riots

Seems pretty obvious to me - the protestors moved the fence a few feet. Given the options of A: Walking down to the protestors and saying "C'mon guys, knock it off, we're all Seattleites here" or B: Gearing up the riot armor and yelling "Leeeeeroy Jeeeeenkins!" the cops chose option B.

I remember reading earlier today that the Seattle mayor had banned the use of gas for 30 days. Guessing these cops are looking at reprimands and suspensions. Worse if there are critical injuries.

Because that is procedure. Because JFK. I don't know much about the bunker or the White House but I have read elsewhere in the past that it really doesn't matter, they were caught flat footed and lost a President to a sniper once and so if there is a crowd in the vicinity there is a counter sniper team keeping an eye out, specifically for threats against the President, his family and anyone else under their protection. That the President is in the bunker doesn't change what their procedures for this is. They failed to protect JFK from sniper fire and that left institutional scars that are still there today, from something two generations ago. President is there, protests and crowds are nearby, counter sniper team deployed.

My guess is that these were the relief for a team already in place.

What the fark. Between that and hiding their movements with spotlights,

How are the police going to be accountable?

Will the courts accept the police reports as accurate when the police have made it impossible for witnesses to see hat's happening or record it?

How can we take the side of the police, when they are preventing the protesters from understanding the risk they are taking, or understanding what the police are even doing?

At this point are the police protecting anything at all? Anything? Or are they merely attacking the public?

How do we know what the protesters intend to do, if the police are going to those efforts to stop them from going about their business? Like the protesters might simply want to get their 10,000 steps in while doing some social justice activism (why not, eh?), but then the police showed up and blocked and blinded them - so of course the protesters are going to be snippy.

Coal miner union organizers are Big Magic. When they show up, people listen, because they have survived murder attempts, and held the hands of cave-in victims, and there are always people without insurance dying from their livelihood, and those organizers are helping them until the bitter end. When a coal miner organizer comes out to help a cause, that's real big.

No rational human being?

To really fix this long overdue problem, a lot has to change and it will be uncomfortable for many.

That is how some of the riots started when they first began protesting. Some people were getting peppered sprayed by cops driving by them. People got pissed off and reacted.

It's been a long time for me since chemo. I really am only moderately at risk. My SO is, unfortunately, a lot more at risk. When I got home, it was walk in the door, strip, put clothes and hat in a trash bag, wipe down the belt, glasses, wallet, key wallet and shoes with alcohol, take a shower, then wash the clothes in the trash bag.

Seattle's the first city where I've seen demonstrators using tactics first employed in Hong Kong.

It's also the first time where I've seen the protestors advance on the police. I don't think the police were driven back, I think they conceded the block, but I observe that we're back to the peaceful stalemate that has characterized previous nights, or we're due for another round of socially-distanced fence chicken, hopefully with a little less smoky/spicy seasoning than the first course that got served an hour ago.

Looks like someone got the Seattle crowd to take 'one step forward' as the police/umbrella line just shifted about three feet towards the police line (as they were stepping backwards/trying to keep their line together.

Now they just need to do every 60 seconds or so (after giving those involved time to regroup/'really' think about the mass of humanity moving them backwards....) the same thing.

One step forward, one step...

dkulprit: lack of warmth: edmo: I stuck that on my Facebook. The haters can't argue that one.

There's so much irony in all this, we could forge it into another Navy ship.  I read the first soldiers of the Revolution protested doing anything until the instructors explained why they had to do it during training.  There's today where armed people protested in Lansing, MI just to buy seeds, go boating, and get haircuts.  Then those same people are now complaining about BLM protests.  It is so dumb, and mind hurting sometimes.

You have no idea how grateful I am that overall, Michigan is handling things better than other states.  Sure idiots protested our governor, but looks like our stay home orders have been working.  Some idiots made a mess in a couple places in more recent protests, but most of the state is handling things well, and new laws in MI are already underway to hopefully not have the problems other states are having with police brutality, and bias enforcement.

Which is why it's infuriating that we're told that you must obey a cop's orders no matter what.

It's insane that an army private in wartime has more rights than a civilian in peacetime.

1.  It's not that cut and dry.

2.  You don't have to follow unlawful orders of the police either.

3.  Both will probably get your ass beat or killed.  Any leader in the military who is willing to give an unlawful order probably has somewhat of a cult following in their platoon/company so if they feel good enough to give an unlawful order that people will follow it that by disobeying it there is a likelihood your life is in danger because now you're putting their career and others in danger.  We know what police do when you don't follow an order.

I've seen enough to know it well. Oddly enough, the liberal parts are the most racist and most likely to laugh it off. It's Seattle. Not LA or NYC or Birmingham. Seattle likes to protect its delusion of being the cradle of liberal tolerance. Cops misbehave on camera threatens that delusion. Dan Savage runs a popular local newspaper there, he will definitely not let this be forgotten.

The Scout Snipers in the Marines really use the double lightning bolts as a symbol?

I wonder how many people who are Jewish serve in that detachment...?

Digging in to that - Taken in 2010, an article in 2012 lists that it was confirmed as authentic, investigated, and the marines are no longer with the unit.

The BLM protesters were taking a bike path back to their cars.  The police suggested they take that route, it just so happened to be lined with goons.

FunkJunkie: Pichu0102: FunkJunkie: There'd be so many lawyers downright priapic if the police tried to shut down someone recording from their own home

Which is why that person should probably flee. I mentioned the windows because, well, people can fall out of them if something goes wro- oh shiat it looks like the woke stream lost connection with the guys in the house/office in Seattle

Yeah I saw that :/

It's a tough call, I'd be inclined to stay if it were only myself at risk. Taking some lumps for the team is part of building sympathy for the cause, a 1st and 4th amendment double whammy for a home invasion to stop a lawful recording of a public space would cause the local government a lot of pain

Yeah, but leaving the cameras running in place and fleeing themselves would allow them to live to record another day, and record what happens in their place until the cops raid the place. If the cops raid and someone has an "Accident" and falls out a window or off a roof, they don't live to record another day.

And the police surely aren't going to let someone record them assaulting a crowd without also trying to attack the cameraperson. Which, considering how popular these streams are right now, makes them a major target for a police assault.

Worth it. Fark the GOP. They weren't going to play nice regardless.

My favorite part of the whole thing (& I'm sure 'why' they did so) is by painting that BIG BLM on the street, Donny's going to see it every time he flies in/out of the WH

/and hopefully some of his pilots just happen to hover over it for a minute or two
//"Sorry sir, had a warning light up here.  Will just take a minute or so to check it out..."

Hopefully just another stressor that leads to his eventual stroke.

He said if you are with a commanding officer, and he tells you to go shoot a person in the head, you can disobey that order.

This is true. You can disobey. Period.

Protesting and 1st amendment is very America; however, a sizable chunk of the Left has been spouting bullshiat about the USA being stolen lands and defending looting since the "country is a looted country" and shiat like that.

It's like watching people stuffing their mouths full of cake while mumbling about the flour in the cake being stolen. Then don't eat the farking cake and go back to Ireland you twats.

Considered "un-American" by whom? The excercise of free speech for or against its government is a fundamental and foundational principle of American values. No matter what generation within which they occur. Those who claim that protest is un-American are actually un-American.

I actually think it was the sounds of the water bottles hitting the ground. But give it a few minutes. The PA announcements are like every 3 minutes.

One of the cops next to the PPB filmer (feed in watching) has a tear gas launcher. Pretty sure I saw the barrel pointed at the fence.
