Ya know, it's really nice that we've got time to dig into twitter threads for amusing pictures/memes & not quickly switching from one feed to another to see what the latest outrage the police are doing.  Peaceful protesting may be boring to watch...but it's the right way to do it.

Alone.

FFS.

Maybe someone will take his place at night? No statehouse should go unguarded by protesters. It's time to be seen. He is doing the right thing.

I hope so, though I could also see him just stay there.  The USMC should be proud of him.

I hope the USMC considers it re: promotion.

I don't know about 'sizable chunk', but bad attempts at conveying a difference in focus lend themselves to that particular perspective.

Two things changed.

The peaceful protesters after the first few days have been savvy about looking for looters and white supremacists in their ranks, and have either subdued them for the police or have both recorded and called the police on them specifically. My guess is the ones that want to loot have either given up, or most have been arrested at this point.

The police seem to also be tired of being recorded doing terrible things that turn viral on the Internet, and the protesters have been left mostly alone. Constantly treating every protest like a riot is both expensive, uses a lot of OT, and distracts the police from doing their actual jobs.

After the false photo ops, the random charges, the gas, the attempted murders, the actual murders, the flat out abductions, the pepper spray, the solidarity with abusers, running people over with cars, the chokeholds...don't accept the bait. anyone still armed with a badge and baton is an enemy.

Coal miner union organizers are Big Magic. When they show up, people listen, because they have survived murder attempts, and held the hands of cave-in victims, and there are always people without insurance dying from their livelihood, and those organizers are helping them until the bitter end. When a coal miner organizer comes out to help a cause, that's real big.

demonfaerie: I talked to my mom's friend that used to be in the Army Reserve. He said you are trained that you can disobey a direct order if you think it is not right. He said if you are with a commanding officer, and he tells you to go shoot a person in the head, you can disobey that order. He is said there was no excuse for the cops even rookies to be complicit in Floyd's murder. He is black, and he thinks a lot of people are riding the coattails of wanting change. He sees it as another trend. He believe people are genuine if they continue to work with organizations or groups that demands change, and not just go protest.  He also grew up in Milwaukee.

Except for we're talking about cops, not military people. They're not trained to judge orders, just obey them.

I'm old enough (on Medicare), and moderately vulnerable, but couldn't stand it any more. My SO is very vulnerable, so couldn't go, but I was there. Based on far too many other protests, tens of thousands would be an undercount. Probably, given how it was all the hell over*, hundreds of thousands.

* I joined a march on H St. Wound up near 9th and Constitution. The crowd started moving again, but even with a mask, I was *not* going under an underpass, so headed back the other way... and there was *another* large march on Pennsylvania Ave.

I made sure to show to be near the federal security, police, and DEA whenever the march passed them, to show them the back of my sign: The Oath is to the Constitution, NOT to the Orange Hairball.

Please be extremely careful.  My folks were vulnerable/very vulnerable, and due to a required doctor's check-in (chemo related), they were exposed.  One ultimately didn't make it.  As big as these events are, and as meaningful as they may be, there are enough supportive actions that can be taken from the safety of your home.

Well yeah. Their job us to make sure that anyone who uses this as cover against the President is stopped. This protest was expected to happen, they have to be prepared. Do you think the President goes anywhere without a counter-sniper team in place? Or that any large planned thing happens in the area without them being there?

Seriously, they are not worried about the protestors, looters or even any casual rioters.
