Until Goodell actually acknowledges and makes amends with Colin Kaepernick, his words are emptier than the Chargers' Los Angeles stadium.

Fark you anyways. If you had done the right thing earlier, maybe we could have been spared a fraction of this heartache.

Rodger goodell has made the same realization, that all of America is making, that trying to please Trump, and his slavering horde of followers is a sucker's game that will only end in disaster. So it's time to get on the right side of history

He's simply scared that the players will actually strike and protest this season.

/Not that they shouldn't. The NFL's overdue for another players' strike. I would prefer a strike to the absolutely stupid ideas of 17+ games and 14 playoff teams.

It won't happen since this is more lip service and fear of pissing off Trumpers, but there is a way they could really make a statement. Basically, talk about what Colin went through and admit that at this point it has been too long for a true return to NFL. To make amends and move in right direction, offer a position to work with the NFL Ops team or at HQ as a means for him to learn the management side or business side. Talk about it as a stepping stone for positions like Team President or CFO and the desire to diversify those positions. Make some statement about how this aligns with the other programs they announced about helping strengthen minority candidates in the head coaching and GM pipelines.

You want to show us you're really sorry?  Resign.  Cancel the season.  Release all the internal strings that show how clueless the owners are.  Let it come crashing down.  Don't want to do that?  Fine.  Just stop pretending you suddenly grew a spine.

Actions speak louder than words. Think of how much further along in the conversation and finding a solution to police brutality we could be if Goodell didn't conspire with owners to shut Kaep up.  Maybe George Floyd might still be alive.  Who knows?  We do know that inaction and sweeping the problem under the rug didn't do shiat to stop it.

I've been saying this for, what, two and a half years now?

If the NFL really cared about racism in America, and in its own ranks, it would have hired CK once it was clear no owner would.

They should have hired him, put in a player relations or lobbying position, and have him work to make players' and fans' lives better.

Now, it's way too farking late.  Apology accepted, but it doesn't undo the damage.

The NFL has incredible influence.  If they wanted to, they could find a way to support justice for its black players, their families, black fans, and -by extension- black citizens.

Oooh.  Might lose some racist and fascist fans?  I somehow don't feel bad that you might become slightly less filthy rich.

I'm super libby lib liberal, and I agree with all of that.

On the other hand, they're a lot of white supremacist dudes in NFL too, and Trump dudes. Drew Brees is latest. But my guess is whites in NFL are 75% Trump if not higher. Offensive linemen, quarterbacks, kickers.

I predict the NFL and Goodell will never "apologize" or admit wrongdoing to Kap in a personal sense instead using the generic term of "our players".  I think doing so would open them up to all sorts of legal skirmishes and lawsuits and will hurt them the most where they really hate to be hurt, the pocketbook.  When handling a problem, I am of the mind being pro-active will always win out over being reactive.  They had their chance to be pro-active and are now paying the price and are on the defensive.

2020-06-06 7:19:36 AM
Excuse me if I don't take Roger Goodell at his word on this.  Goodell, and the National Football League ownership and front offices, decided to avoid conflict to make an easy buck while destroying the career of a man who decided to take a principled stand for not only what he believed to be right but for what is a fundamental part of the America we have been raised to believe in.  The League chose the wrong side of history and now that the tables have turned, they want to be seated at the table as if they are one of the good guys.

As much as I typically extol forgiveness as a virtue, not in this case.  The League not only to stand on the wrong side of history, they tore a man down and exiled him from his career over it.  For that they should not be celebrated as heroes, but pitied for their failures.

Who's to say? But as recently as this week, he pulled out that "kneeling is disrespectful to the flag and the troops" when he and everyone damn well knows that it's not about that.

We do know that he's a big Trump guy. And while he may not be a racist, he certainly isn't bothered by racism.

That was sort of the point.  There's a lot of land between "won't kneel during the anthem" and white supremacy.  Not understanding something and actively believing your race is better than another race are extremely distant.

He apologized in public to the NFL players on behalf of the nonplayers for the benefit of their standing with the public.  The movement is bigger than Kaepernick and in general up to now, including before yesterday's apology, has shown reluctant acceptance to everyone - accept Kaepernick.
The NFL's dismissal of Kaepernick is, for some reason, bigger than his kneeling.  His story is more complex than the current narrative.

For the most part, what Goodell says is irrelevant.  He has always been nothing more than a meat shield for the owners.  There hasn't been an NFL commissioner with the balls to stand up to the owners since Rozelle.

I think Goodell gets too much shiat. People seem to think has any power. He's nothing more than a figurehead. He doesn't do anything without approval from the owners who pay his $40M a year salary.

He didn't put out this statement on his own. It was approved by the owners or at least a majority of them.
Anything he wants to do has to be run through the owners. I don't know his personal thoughts on basically anything, I don't think anyone does because he's probably not allowed to give his personal thoughts.

There seems to be a misconception that Goodell runs the NFL. He doesn't. He's a clearinghouse for the owners.

No.

He was brought in to make the brand more appealing.  He farked up player discipline, threw out fines for ridiculous infractions, alienated large fanbases by meddling with schedules, and overall showed no interest in player safety or well-being.

Do not give the owners credit for this.  Was it their idea to move the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl or play regular games in England?  No.  That was Roger's idea.  Not theirs.

He deserves blame.  Let's GIVE him the blame.

I don't know what Brees is or isn't however I do find it very telling that he's had years of talking with teammates about kneeling yet STILL pushed the false narrative that kneeling was a protest against the flag and/or the military. He simply refused to listen.

Has he finally figured it out or is he just  suprised by the massive backlash and doesn't appear to be going away?

That a lot of people are tired of people like Brees redirecting the conversation because they are not affected by racism.

I also find it very telling that people like Brees jumped on the "don't disrespect the flag" narrative while full supporting the police altering the flag to make it represent their very small minority while not giving a shat that is intentionally disrespectful to those affected by police corruption.

Personally I lean towards Brees protecting his brand more than him having actually educating his self on the issues. He's had years to do that and refused. Years of refusing to listen to the guys on his team he calls "brothers".

Him jumping to the "my grandparents fought in wars" narrative also tells me he doesn't actually know why they fought. Why they put their lives on the line. He seems to simply refuse to believe it has anything to do with allowing Americans to love this country AND want to make it better.

Hopefully I am wrong and he's finally decided to open his ears and listen. Hopefully many others follow. He doesn't have to support or kneel but he should have enough respect for those he calls friends to stop trying to falsely redirect their attempt at initiating change.

Drew is a Trump dude. And that came off the heels of the white supremacists sentence so I never concluded King of Vegas was saying he was a WS, just that he was a Trump dude. I even thought, someone is going to take that the wrong way. KoV might clear it up but I'm guessing it's an unfortunate dangling modifier type of thing. If he thinks of Brees as a WS I will stand corrected.

At best I think Brees is a stupid illogical man who puts his own jingoistic Murica agenda ahead of his concern for his teammates.  Is is possible to be systemically racist through ignorance, yet not racist on a personal basis?

His publicist seems to get it, I'd like to hang out with his publicist.  I award Brees one Nancy Reagan hypocrite award.  He really started thinking about these things once his income and reputation was threatened.

rjakobi: He farked up player discipline, threw out fines for ridiculous infractions

He doesn't determine the the discipline. That's done by committee and includes a player advisory committee made up of ex-players. They work together and suggest the discipline. There's a discipline schedule with a range of disciplines for various infractions.

rjakobi: Was it their idea to move the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl or play regular games in England?

I don't know whose idea it was but regardless, the owners would have voted on both of these things. He's not telling the owners what they're doing with their teams.

rjakobi: and overall showed no interest in player safety or well-being.

Rule changes, whether for player safety or some other reason are proposed by the rules committee and voted on by the owners. He can't just make up rules and implement or remove them at will.

There may be some things he can do unilaterally that owners don't want to trifle with but don't think for a second that anything like scheduling, rules or anything else that could effect their bottom line, that they're not involved.

As much as people want to believe that Goodell is sitting in a Volcano lair, laughing maniacally and making unilateral decisions, it's just not true. The owners and NFLPA are involved in pretty much every major decision.
