No, it wasn't.

The first 'viral video' was Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You" on Launch in 1998. It had over 10,000,000 views in one month when I was a Freshman - it was entirely due to us U.S. high school kids at the time. Everyone had that on their burned CD mixes.

"Who the FARK are Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter?! These guys are GENIUS!"

...then came some side project (actually, their real band (which we didn't know at the time), was just playing behind Stardust) I can't remember...

/Oh, yeah! DAFT PUNK.

First rule of newsgroups--DON'T TALK ABOUT NEWSGROUPS!

Excuse me while I become misty with nostalgia...even though there are 1,000,000,000,000 +1 "free" porn sites out there today, nothing quite compares to downloading 100+ posts and yenc-ing them back together to get a single five minute video.

/Sad part is, I'm not being sarcastic.  That shiat was teh bomb.

...funny way to spell Censor...

/Genecyst 0.xx era. It would only run demos, and, like, the first stage of Sonic The Hedgehog before crashing.
//Useless Knowledge: the first Genesis game they got to run all the way through (at around 10fps on a Pentium 486/66) was, actually, Shining In The Darkness. The second was Mortal Kombat. Sonic was third. THEN came OPTIMIZATION!
///Kega Fusion is KING of emulators. Wanna play without slowdown? It has that option without crashing... IIAC it still is the only emulator to do that.

Anything over a MB or two wasn't going very far thanks to dial-up. But when we got internet at work in 97, that was the first thing I downloaded.

I worked for a PC store around that time and we needed something to test out the MPEG accelerator card in one of our demo PCs.  Somebody brought it in on CD-R and we decided to fire it up.  About a dozen people consisting of customers and sales staff eventually crowded around this dinky 15" monitor to see what was playing.  Everyone loved it so we just kept it on a loop for the rest of the day.  I'm surprised that nobody was fired.  We did sell a couple of those PCs that day, though.

I remember downloading this at 33.6 in three or four parts "back in the day".
I stitched it together and used my Mac 8500 to dump it to 8mm video tape and from there to VHS.

Good times.

And I'm pretty sure I still have a at least one or two recycled AOL floppies around somewhere.
It sucked when they started sending out CD's as those were utterly useless.

Why do I not remember this at all?

Seems like there were a lot more viral videos way before that. Good grief, waaay more. I recall lots of clips of Babylon 5 getting shared online in 96, though admittedly that was a more niche market. The whale getting blown up got passed around a lot. Rotten.com was always a source of horrific viral garbage. I smell millenial writing.

That's legendary. The only LORD-related date I ever went on was if you counted spending my turns talking to Violet the barmaid, thinking she would somehow invite me up the tavern stairs.

I'm in the same boat - I was in college from 93-2000 and I don't remember most of the things in this thread. To be fair, there's not much from those seven years that I do remember.
