Umm. My job is to put myself between black protesters and cops? Because if I get killed, as a white person, people will take it more seriously? And always remember I am your guest?

Man. I've been invited to some shiatty parties before, but...

Sorry article writer, I'm not joining protests in the middle of a farking pandemic.

I hate to see what Covid is going to do to the black communities in a couple weeks. Its going to be tragic.

I'd like to think that under other circumstances the curfew in my city would have pissed me off enough to join the protests, but the second wave (wave 1.5?) of infections from these protests is going to do some damage. I'm sure the police everywhere delight in arresting people, confiscating their masks, and throwing them into small cells together in gross lots.

I come from a very small town in Tennessee that had a protest and while I'm kind of proud of them, according to the latest census all of twelve black people lived in the town and the protesters didn't manage to get one of them to attend.

That's where I worry that support becomes cooption, or you end up with well-meaning message drift. A couple dozen young white progressive kids show up to say black lives matter but there are no black people there so maybe they tack on that gay or latino lives matter? And no fracking while we're at it? I don't know. Maybe it stayed on target and didn't happen like that.

I want to say that for a former sundown town to have any kind of BLM-inspired protest is a Good Thing, and it probably is, but I don't know if I could pile on to that.

Here in Asheville I'm told the protests were about 70% white, which isn't all that out of line with our demographics.

I've been saying sarcastic things on the internet these last few days.  Am I a hero of the movement?

White people are far too comfortable with "I'm not racist, but".  1 easy way to be a good ally is to tell them to fark right off before they even bother with the rest of their comment.  Being racist shouldn't be comfortable.

The point of these protests is because you can do that and not die, shiatforbrains.  Black people can't.

I get the sentiment, but it just seems like a fantasy to me.

Of course I've shouted cops down in the middle of the street for being arseholes with no repercussions, so there's that as a counter point:P

But not when everyone is amped up and ready for a fight

What I would like to know is what do I do if I end up the crowd watching a cop strangle a guy like this?  I don't think I could stand by.

I'd like to think I wouldn't...but 4 of them?  You really can't say for sure unless you're put in the situation.  Hopefully we never are.

yeah, I know, I bet the people in that crowd feel like shiat.

I doubt I'd be able to perceive the actual danger that one guy was in.  The cops obviously didn't until it was too late.

That's not a defense of what they did, they should all be charged with murder and accessory to murder.  Their position of authority should be an aggravating circumstance, too.
