If it were me in a burning  box yelling for help or a squirrel on the lawn I know what my dog would do.

I would be toast.

Unless I was roasting a pork chop.

I've never fallen down a well, but my Akita (RIP) was highly protective when he smelled fear or a gaurded scent on me. He was highly sociable, but not with sh*t talkers on the street. I live in a violent town, so this happened more than once. He wasn't just large, he was muscular and had a head like a grizzly bear. When teeth were bared it would make nearly anyone piss themselves. But otherwise he was the biggest dork on the planet. Didn't even bark at the mailman. Also, he was a snuggle bunny.

I know the article is about dogs using skill to help their owners, but it reminded me of my dog. He'd do anything for me. If he could tend bar he'd make me a manhattan. He never fetched slippers, but.he would kill you if there was a problem.

I don't know why this surprises anyone who has ever encountered dogs.

When my mom was a kid, her family had a Doberman. My grandad was very much the alpha male and the pack leader, but my mom was the one who hung out with the dog the most, and she was such a lovebug she wondered if he would protect her. My grandad said, "Let's see."

He rolled up a newspaper and pretended to hit my mom with it, and she acted as if she were being beaten. So the dog was faced with a dilemma -- attack his pack leader or defend his boon companion. He jumped up, grabbed the newspaper out of my grandfather's hand, and tore it to shreds so he couldn't "hurt" my mom, all without touching a hair on the pack leader's head.

I had a dog that would go into protect mode any time someone pretended to hit me.  I also would lay on the floor under a blanket, crying for help, and she would frantically dig at the blanket until she got me uncovered.  She was such a good doge.

In fact, there were eight dogs who whined, and they did so during the distress test. Only one other dog whined, and that was for food

Bet it was a Labrador!

Uh...

About one-third of the dogs rescued their distressed owner...

Interestingly, only 19 out of 60 dogs actually went over to the food and opened the box (far less than had rescued their owners)...

Do they mean 1? 1 less than had rescued their owners?
