So, business as usual, eh?

Bet everyone's happy their teeth look like an old unkempt graveyard full of crooked and broken tombstones, just like dear old Mum's.

Everyone does themselves, subby. But dentistry is a kinky way to put it.

I'm kind of surprised dentistry isn't considered somewhat necessary.

Sure, postpone some cleanings or a filling, but you can get some pretty serious health issues in your mouth. Then what?

Well, yeah, but before they weren't "forced". The moment something isn't a choice, regardless of whether you wouldn't have chosen the same, it's awful and must be complained about.

I was thinking an infected abscess of some kind.

There are life-threatening outcomes to tooth and gum issues.

Sure, but let the Yanks laugh at something: riots are tearing through their cities, they've lost 100k+ to Corona, their 'leaders' are trying to find ways to stifle free speech, plague-cultists are helping the disease spread as far as it can, this year their elections are not going to be free or fair, millions are sliding towards poverty thanks to jobs lost due to the Pandemic etc.

Let them laugh at our teeth, if it provides them momentary relief from everything else.

Why do Europeans have an obsession with the US, but we don't really mind what you all do.  And you need to keep in mind that the US is a huge country with lots of people.  So anything that happens in the US will likely have larger absolute numbers, but you need to look at per capita numbers.

I guess me and my fellow stifled free speech, plague-cultists helping spread the disease aren't as effective as our European cousins.  Can you give us some pointers on this?

US Corona deaths per million - 316
Ireland - 333
Netherlands - 347
Sweden - 435
France - 440
Italy - 550
UK - 562
Spain - 580
Belgium - 816

It is pretty funny watching American exceptionalism flounder.

"[And] our results showed that Americans do not have better teeth than the English," he added. "In fact, they had significantly more missing teeth, and inequalities in oral health were much worse in the U.S. compared to England."

Overall, American adults were found to have a higher average number of missing teeth than their British counterparts: 7.31 versus 6.97, the study revealed.

The study does have one flaw. They are only looking at those who go seek dental care.

If you do your own work or don't do any, then you won't appear in the study.

It is across many metrics, the WHO, etc. Your perspective is likely just people you see on TV.

You are making a false assumption on my "perspective." I was pointing out what I thought was a flaw in the study. I didn't dig too deep, I just got the impression that the data was pulled from various health records. My pet peeve are stories based on studies that are limited or not yet peer reviewed. That people don't understand statistics on how to interpret results of controlled studies. So we have wild stories in headlines that may only be partly true. Then when future studies pull back on the assertions the public get angry. It undermines the faith in scientific studies.

I think the real difference is that Americans define good dental care differently. (As the study pointed out.) An American defines healthy teeth as a row of bright white rectangles. Millions of dollars and hours of pain are spent on braces for kids to guide the growth.
While i think a typical UK resident will say, "no cavities, no disease, not falling out. I'm good." They care little that a few may be wonky or yellowish. They seem to look down on cosmetic dental care. Just look at all the teasing that Jimmy Carr went through when he had his teeth done.

Man I have a friend who makes way more than 6 figures and has refused to go to a dentist in 20 years, ever since high school; you can smell his breath from 3 feet away.

I'll never understand a person who has the means and doesn't get at least one cleaning per year.    Its easy to ignore the crap you're putting into your body, but you have one set of teeth and you can see them and actively, easily improve the health.  otherwise,   Bacteria and rotten stuff get in your gums and calcify to your teeth, gums get infected, infection gets in your bloodstream.  It farks you up down the line.

Or Martin Amis. Yes, I think you're right, but it's not so much looking down on cosmetic dental care as simply not seeing the point in it. Like vaginal "rejuvenation" therapy is to sane people, it seem to us an odd way of spending money on something which worked just fine, particularly when the end result - in the case of the teeth, anyway - is so very false looking.
