Agreed, hardly newsworthy unless mom gets stabbed or something.

When you're a young teen, Scorched Earth always seems like the best response.

He's a bit older than that, so time to grow up, young man.  I won't assume he is free-loading.

If he was able to disconnect power either he flipped the main and the mom somehow didn't know how to flip it back, or the electric bill was in his name and he discontinued service.

If the latter case this sounds like it might be a crazy mother in law living with the couple? Article doesn't say who's house it is.

I doubt he had the power officially disconnected.   To me it sounds like they were arguing about whatever...say the son/gf spent all their time using the wifi and not doing/helping around the house...so she disconnects the wifi.   So he, by whatever means, turns off the power.  No power company shows up THAT fast.  Also, even if he did, that'll be extra stupid, because he'd have to pay to reconnect it.

Sounds like your basic hillbilly dust up.  Also, I seriously doubt mom is living with them, but the other way around.

Or he pretended to be her--he very well might know any verification questions.  I actually know the verification answers for my wife better than she does.  (In our early years together her English was rather limited, I handled all that sort of stuff for her.  By now she could but she still prefers me to do it.)

Back in the 90's I had a job taking service delivery calls for a telecom company.  I remember one guy calling in claiming his name was "Veronica" and wanted to disconnect all services permanently.  He too, knew all the verification answers, but the whole thing was still hinky.  So while he was on the phone I picked up the other extension and dialed the contact number.

And just like that, I got the REAL "Veronica" on the line, who was understandably pissed off that her estranged husband was trying to cancel services.  I just told both parties "Yeah, we ain't getting into the middle of this" and dropped the calls.

Heh...my husband has one of those very unisex names.   It has come in handy when I have to handle some family business ( a few utilities are just in his name).   But I never do that when it's official, like with the IRS, etc.
I do get weird cold calls asking for "Tracy" and I'll say, "Yes, this is she" till I find out what they want.

For all of those who smarted this:

My soon to be 20 year old is back because she completely fell in her face failed at living on her own. She can stay as long as it takes to actually learn how to, ya know, adult.

You can only do so much before kids age into adulthood.  Some kids need the extra time. And some just need to learn the hard way that 'the advice we gave, yeah, well, if you listened instead of saying f' you for 9 months, maybe it would have turned out better.' Im not here to control or babysit. Offer experience and knowledge, point out some warning signs when things start to go sideways, and some help when appropriate to get started to make your own life? Yes.

Well. Hopefully lessons learned. Start again. At least ya got that option, kid. Not everyone does.

/the breaker tripping kid? fark 'em. Be a dick to your parent while she/he/they are footing your bills? Karma.

I understand that, but it isn't just her son, but also his girlfriend.   You want to do adult things, like living with your girlfriend, that's great.  But doing it while living with your mom and acting like a petulant teenager..nope.

There is no indication that the kids live there. This happened on Memorial Day so it's possible that the son and girlfriend were there for the holiday. It's also possible that the son lives there but the girlfriend does not.

That said, the son was being a dick.

It's smart because the kid/adult in the story is causing problems for those he lives with (who are the homeowners).
He needs to leave because of that.
Doesn't matter if he's 20 or 60.

Upon further investigation, officers say the incident began when the 41-year-old mother got into an argument with her 20-year-old son, and his girlfriend, and disconnected the WIFI service.

She was 11 years old when she gave birth to her son?!

I did something like that when I was a kid in the early 60's.  Metal toy helicopter blades.  Popped
the fuser (forerunner to the circuit breaker) during a thunderstorm event.  Dad goes and replaces
the fuse, power was out.  Mid summer, hot (back then fans were all you had to keep you cool).
Loaded us all up in the car, went out to the local food drive in.  Ordered ice cream.  Dad slips
away to "go use the restroom".  Comes back, couple minutes later, the local highway patrolman
comes out starts chatting with him about new cars (dad was a car salesman).  Dad asks him
if he knows what took out power on the other side of town.  Highway patrolman says they think it
was some child sticking something in an electrical outlet.  I got frightened.  Mean prank but you
know what, I never stuck anything into an AC outlet that wasn't suppose to be in one after that either.

Had a similar situation years ago when I worked at the cable company as a lead in the call center. Phone rep said the request to disconnect service sounded suspicious, and notes on the account listed multiple warnings about this happening previously, including a canceled disconnection order. It got canceled because right before the disconnection, the sales team called the account holder to try and stop the disco order for a save, and discovered the account holder never requested it.
I requested the phone rep cold transfer the call to me where I informed the ex husband that despite his request to close the account, not only was I refusing to do so, but I flagged the account for a security breach. Any service changes would request the true account holder to arrive in person at the public equipment pick up/drop off locations with a government issued ID to authorize them. Guy flipped out, yelled at me. He used profanity, so I initiated the 3-strikes policy we had and I hung up on him. I also added a note that any future calls on this account should be transferred to my extension.

20 minutes later, sure enough a woman was calling in and requesting a service disconnect. So I had them transfer the call to me, then explained the situation of how the account was locked down. The woman stammered and said that she was the account holder, and was authorizing the disco. I told her what was done was done due to the abuse of a non-authorized user on the account. I also added a small quip about how if her boyfriend  was willing to go this far to ruin his ex wife's life, what did she think he was going to do to you? 3 seconds of silence later, and I hung up the call.

Never had another complaint in that account as far as I know.

On the phone my voice is routinely assumed to be female, although I can't hear why.  (And add that to a name that is rare enough that it's routinely mistaken for the far more common female "Lauren" it's quite a recipe for confusion.)
