She was smart to refuse a search of her purse.  If an officer ever asks permission to search your property, refuse.

Holy shiat, do they not teach these cops ANYTHING? I worked security for a season at the Jazz arena here, and in our training, that was listed as one of the reasons that we weren't supposed to go rummaging around in purses and backpacks, we were supposed to have the person open it up and move things themselves.

The other reason was liability, but cops don't have to worry about that. They're supposed to be trained to look for shiat like this, rather than blindly paw through the purse, specifically because of incidents like this.
