I guess we're all supposed to collectively forget that Donnie One Term told the Chinese they can do whatever they like in Hong Kong in order to get his trade deal signed?

How's that trade deal going anyhow?

Nothing to distract from this administration's incompetence like the potential of a hot war with Gyna.

Mike Pompeo emails Blizzard, asking how he can get back his Battle.net account after he deleted it. He's really excited for Shadowlands.

I won't rag on people in Hong Kong for not understanding why Donnie One Term won't ever be doing this, but I do feel sorry for them.

Is that good or bad for the stock market.  That's how I make all decisions from now on, whether it's good or bad for the stock market.

/Sorry Hong Kongers, you're better off if the US government sits this one out, given our current leadership.

It's a little erroneous to say that anyone "won" the Cold War.

And here's the real damage done to US influence. Once you've thrown diplomacy out the window, the only leverage you have against bad actors is the threat of war. And nobody's going to go to war with China over Hong Kong.

Yeah, making China the punching proverbial punching bag might win you political points at home. And yeah, they're up to some seriously authoritarian and shady shiat. But our only leverage with them was diplomacy with an economic foot in the door.

Now, they have no reason to actually listen to us, unless they genuinely believe war is a real possibility. And the party leadership doesn't genuinely want war. They just use the US as the foil to keep their militants focused on an external threat.

What a shiatty timeline. I'm really looking forward to the day when the adults are running the room again; but the damage has been done.

I'm sure the leadership in Beijing is shaking with fear and thinking: "We have a bad-ass here."

Wow, just keep in mind, the US was actively funding these protests, and now it appears that we're pulling out the rug. Guess it was about leverage, not promoting freedom. Expect to see a new trade deal with China in 3-2-1.

This doesn't get into whether the NED is a cut-out for the CIA, as has been alleged. But it is an NGO that is fully funded by the Congress, and co-founded by Ronald Reagan in 1983.

One more thing.

This is all because of the idiotic conservative inclination to only recognize strength when it's threatening to kick someone in the teeth. The value of walking softly is completely lost on them.

So, we "won"the Cold War by reinforcing inequalities in the West, mostly by demonizing (or dragging behind a truck) anyone who wasn't a right-wing authoritarian shiatstain.  And installing right-wing authoritarian shiatstains across the rest of the world.  I am failing to see how what Pompeo is doing is any different.

What is the U.S. going to do to "stand with the people of Hong Kong?"

2020-05-27 1:06:55 PM
IIRC, China gets a great deal of financial advantage from Hong Kong's status as a quasi-independent entity according to American trade regulation. If Hong Kong is no longer even technically independent, China loses the sweetheart trade arrangements resulting from shipping through HK. Hong Kong has been counting on the financial advantages of that deal to keep a semblance of sovereignty, but it looks like the central government is no longer willing to play along.

Food for thought: PRC promises are good for about twenty years- based on the Hong Kong experience.

Well, We stand HERE where it's safe, and the people of Hong Kong stand THERE where the shiat is going down, and Trump stands on the gold course cheating his ass off. See. We're all standing together...just geographically separate. And now we're waiving. See?

It is a worthwhile thought experiment to consider what if Trump hadn't signaled that getting a trade deal done with Beijing was literally The Most Important Thing To Him and how much Beijing rightly interpreted that as an excuse to turn around and therefore accelerate their timeline of absorbing Hong Kong entirely into the fold.

I don't put the India/China dust up in that category. I bet India could more than hold its own with the Chinese.

If Trump is for it, farkers by and large are against it, and vice versa. That's why you'll find so much positive propaganda on Fark for China, Iran, North Korea, and death and destruction in general.
