Not sure why they call that "unsafe." I've seen a shiatload of pictures that look just like that dating back decades. It's just how it's done.

Military guys fly that close all the time. It's what they do.

Yeah, came to say that.  I have watched F-14's escort Russian bombers in close escort formation a couple of times.

For what?  Flying their aircraft in international air space?

The Chinese kept doing that. Then they collided and our plane had to emergency land on Chinese soil. I think their pilot died. They must have got a lot of good Intel from our plane. Sadly, we did nothing. This would have been a good time to smack them down a peg or two. But cheap labor for our corporations and cheap imports are more important.

It's not that one of them were so close; it's that there was one on each side, making it dangerous to turn.

There is in TFA, too. The one picture is zoomed in, which foreshortens it. The two videos show a more realistic depiction.

Is there?  You know the wing span on that bomber?

The video of those Russian planes is perfectly acceptable and safe.  It's not new, or dangerous, and has been happening for as long as we've been flying aircraft.   Americans whining that they don't own the whole sky/ocean and other countries don't bow correctly to their obvious superiority is nothing new, either.

You are just seeing what you want to see. You have never heard of "perspective" in drawings/photos? Really? Guess what, Elijah Wood is not hobbit sized. Nor were the other actors. They use perspective to make them look that way.

What does the wingspan have any thing to do with their distance apart?

Dang if that picture isn't an exact example of that bullsh*t story about how Russians just used a pencil and we spent millions making a space pen, but true. We should dust off a F-4, see if they remember each other.

Didn't Trump say before he was elected that these unsafe Russian intercepts were because they didn't respect America's leadership at the time, and that such things would not happen when he was in office?

What? Trump lied about something and held his predecessor/opponent to a ludicrous double standard? Well I never.

2020-05-27 1:30:56 AM
Meh..That's been a thing for a long time..It happens all the time, and not just with the US...
European nations have to use interceptors routinely have to turn around Russian planes too..
Not too long ago the Russians were doing some sort of exercise and kept sending various
heavy Bear bombers and Blackjack (Russian version of the B-1)  toward the UK in mock
attack and stand off launch runs..

With other countries, the  US usually has our observation (read spy)  and anti-sub planes (P-8)
chased off..And it happens all the time...Every time someone is going to launch something, the US
has a couple of planes that monitor it both visually and with electronic surveillance on various KC-135's.

Came across this one a while back while trying to find the orange markings they had when my father served in Iceland. Scale seems a lot more appropriate (F-102 ~68ft : TU-95 ~152ft)

"Safe" distance is relative, anyway.

The Chinese were worse, they'd fly in front of the plane, essentially causing "airholes".

Ie. a very rough flight.

We have nothing to worry about from Russia aside from their ICBMs. The Tupolev is far too slow to pose a threat with an atomic bomb, we would see it coming from hundreds of miles away. And their ICBMs have been in a state of decay since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Their male population is drinking themselves to death, and there's a large number of conscripted soldiers in their military. Meaning they don't want to be there, and they'll drop the rifle as soon as they can.

Russia was powerful due to it's land mass when people tried to invade, and in the middle ages having 10 million soldiers who had a land path to Europe meant something. Now, not so much. During WW2 they had great tanks, but their biggest advantage was having so many people from countries annexed into Russia that they could literally throw them at the German minefields and machinegun nests. The book "War on the Eastern Front: The German Soldier in Russia" by James Lucas is a relatively short read, but it's a good book.

I'm more concerned with China, since they've been developing mobile surface to air missiles designed to destroy aircraft carriers and destroyers for years. The only country in the Southeast with a contingency of Aircraft Carriers is the US. And China certainly has the capabilities, and the number of people, to cause a real concern to the US. Russia is laughable compared to China.
