(Newsweek)   Ornithologists and bird researchers discuss mourning dove Randy Johnson exploded in 2001. "I was 11 at the time, so I'm sure I found this event incredibly funny. Looking back, I am just in awe of the incredibly poor luck that bird had"   (newsweek.com) divider line

I remember seeing this live and thinking WTF just happened? I never thought about the baseball's perspective though until I found this video.

That remains the funniest damn thing I've ever seen.

Did they figure out what kind of bird it was? A seagull?

On the bright side, the bird didn't suffer.

*BAM!*

And it's lights out.

[Regarding being asked to reply: "Just for the record, I'm not an ornithologist, but a research geophysicist interested in the geophysical underpinnings of avian navigation."]

There are few things worse than a guy who gets more ass than a toilet seat, and can't stop telling you about it

Several years ago in r/baseball, a photographer who covered that minor league circuit was discussing that game.

Johnson did NOT want to talk about it, and sat at his locker silently for what seemed like an eternity.  Then finally reporters started asking about the game, delicately trying to avoid referring to The Incident.  Finally, a brave and foolish young reporter piped up and said,

"So is that what it sounds like, when doves cry?"

That reporter was barred from the locker room until Johnson left.

Morning Dove, that left its mate in a state of mourning.

The sad thing I remember is that there was another bird flying with that one (it was barely noticeable in the replay), likely a mate.

I was waiting for my ride to little league practice and I was taking practice swings. I heard a plink and looked at my bat. I hit a dropping bird turd right on the screws. Much more humane than connecting on an entire bird.

The gif below is one of my all time favorites. It repeats and gets funnier after a few pitches. Also, it seems like it slows down at the moment of impact. Probably doesn't, but the puff of feathers kind of makes it looks like it does.

Irony bonus: I just posted this gif in a thread about a Randy Jackson on the entertainment tab minutes ago

I still find this whole thing hysterical. The situation is absurd enough, but to have it be one of baseball's greatest pitchers of all time, and caught on video...SMDH LOL.

That's impressive, but my wife has decapitated two birds with golf balls while they were in flight.

That's why John Kruk acted the way he did in the All Star game when Randy Johnson threw one over his head.

Didn't some TV show try to 'recreate' the incident with a pitching machine and a (frozen) chicken gun?

(The chickens were frozen.  And already dead.  And I have no idea how that elephant got into my pajamas.)

Turns out they tried 200 times to have them collide in mid-air with no success.

And if 'professionals' in a controlled environment can't pull it off...
