At the grocery store last Thursday, at least half of the people weren't wearing face masks and were going the wrong way down marked one way aisles.  Since there hasn't been a major outbreak around here, people just don't seem to care.

Vigilantism, the New Normal. (And all of them wearing cloth masks, that don't stop a single virus particle because the weave is too big - but don't let facts stop the masses).

Course, if you tried to implement it to tackle REAL crime the ACLU would have you locked up in a cage.

Shortsighted clowns.

As morbid as it makes it, this is the crux: no one close enough to these people died unexpectedly from the virus. It just wasn't bloody or gory enough for the average Republican voter to notice.

Here in the plague-ridden swamps of Connecticut, everyone wears a mask in supermarkets.
Outside, we tend not to, as long as we can avoid getting too close to people. As New Englanders, this comes naturally.

Also, did the ACLU say this was okay?

There has been no major outbreak where I live and it is making me more nervous, not less.  To use an incorrect simile that Trumpsters can understand, it's like an unraked forest.  It's gonna burn.

Good.

Since appealing to reason, common sense and a respect for human life hasn't worked, asking them to be good citizens and not try to kill their neighbors doesn't work, and shame doesn't work, all that's left is physically hounding the plague rats out of the farking store like farking pariahs.

Which is how I think right wingers should all be treated everywhere at all times anyway.

I've been talking about he low case count here and the relaxing of standards. There are two perceptions: "See? There's no problem." And "See? We've been preventing a larger problem."

(Have taken note that my doctor, involved in the county response plan and located in the hospital building, pushed back my routine appointment when the first dire predictions were coming in. But he hasn't pushed it back up since then either...)

ANY system that depends on people being personally responsible won't work.  This has been proven time after time after time.

The university I work for wants to open in the fall.  Their plans rest on people doing the right thing.  College students and tenured professors do whatever they want to do.  COVID has not changed that.

WWKD? Form a Voltron of Karen, as was done here.

Karen is about people trying to control the behavior of others. From families having a BBQ, to people who she feels "are clearly being a problem".

You have become Karen, but your haircut will need to wait.

I live in the UP of Michigan and despite the "stay-at-home" being extended to mid June our section of Michigan has had a lot of other restorations lifted on restaurants, parks and "nonessential" stores.

That being said I went to a variety of stores this weekend, Meijer, Walmart, a few auto parts stores, and I would say despite being an increase in crowds, I'd say pretty close to pre-Covid levels, there was probably close to 85-90% of people wearing masks out there which is encouraging.

Now if visitors from the in Covid19 infected areas of Michigan that are now flocking up here can show the same courtesy then may be we can avoid Covid19 getting endemic up here.

And let's be honest, if there's anyone who's going to do it this way, it's New Yorkers.  Can you imagine that going down in California?  Or Florida?  With the sheer volume of morons packing bar pool parties and beaches and parks (even here in Canada FFS) this seems to be the only way to deal with rampant stupidity.

2020-05-25 10:26:56 AM
Just to head off the plague rats, here's a list of journal articles that speak to the effectiveness of masks:

D. F. Johnson, J. D. Druce, C. Birch, M. L. Grayson. "A quantitative assessment of the efficacy of surgical and N95 masks to filter influenza virus in patients with acute influenza infection." Clin. Infect. Dis. 49, 275-277 (2009). Indicates that surgical and N95 masks (the non-valve variety) are equally effective at egress filtering for influenza virus. Experimental method used RT-PCR to detect virus on sample plates 20 cm from an infected, coughing patient.

D. Milton, M. Fabian, B. Cowling, M. Grantham, J. McDevitt. "Influenza Virus Aerosols in Human Exhaled Breath: Particle Size, Culturability, and Effect of Surgical Masks." PLOS Pathog. 9, (2013). Indicates surgical masks produce a greater than 3-fold reduction of exhaled droplets and are effective at source control.

S. Bae, et al. "Effectiveness of Surgical and Cotton Masks in Blocking SARSCoV-2: A Controlled Comparison in 4 Patients." Annals Intern. Medicine (2020). This particularly interesting study had COVID-19 patients cough onto a sample plate at 20 cm distance and alternate between mask and no mask. It was a small-n study, but it showed a 10-fold decrease in exhaled viral load...using a cotton mask.

Leung, et al. "Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks," Nature Medicine 26, 676-80, 03 Apr. 2020. Relevant: "Surgical face masks significantly reduced detection of influenza virus RNA in respiratory droplets and coronavirus RNA in aerosols, with a trend toward reduced detection of coronavirus RNA in respiratory droplets. Our results indicate that surgical face masks could prevent transmission of human coronaviruses and influenza viruses from symptomatic individuals." (cf. the Bae et al. paper referenced earlier which noted similar particle capture rates for cotton and surgical masks).

van der Sande et al. "Professional and Home-Made Face Masks Reduce Exposure to Respiratory Infections Among the General Population," PLoS One, 2008 Jul. 9, 3(7). Relevant: "Any type of general mask use is likely to decrease viral exposure and infection risk on a population level, in spite of imperfect fit and imperfect adherence, personal respirators providing most protection."

Davies et al. "Testing the Efficacy of Homemade Masks: Would They Protect in an Influenza Pandemic?" Dis. Med. Pub. Health Prep. 2013 Aug 7(4) 413-418. Relevant: "The median-fit factor of the homemade masks was one-half that of the surgical masks. Both masks significantly reduced the number of microorganisms expelled by volunteers, although the surgical mask was 3 times more effective in blocking transmission than the homemade mask....Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection." Results indicate that for sub-micron particles (as measured by total colony-forming units isolated after coughing), the no-mask, homemade-mask, and surgical-mask numbers were 21, 6, and 3.

So listen up, dumb-dumbs. When the smart people tell you to put on a mask, your job is to go, "Yes sir, right away sir" and do what you're farking told, and not sit there and cry about what you imagine your "FREEDUMBS" to be.

Wear your farking mask, or get a beat-down. It's your call.

It's some cargo cult humor shiat. Where they just don't understand how it works and are just parroting words like they're magic spells.

Good. Early on I really had to mind myself not to say passive-aggressive shiat like "thanks for spreading the virus" to morons at the grocery store not bothering to wear any PPE at all. Seeing people be such blatant assholes really pissed me off

But over time I've noticed those types have become fewer and fewer till where now most everyone is at least wearing a mask

Of course, there's always a few die hard assholes who refuse to do their part, even though everyone else around them clearly is. But that's all part of being a brain dead little MAGAt
