To buy into "small government" you have to be stupid enough to hire an electrician who believes that evil spirits use wiring to enter into your home, and hence rejects the concept of wiring.

Yeah, the pandemic. Just this morning I read the pandemic was tweet fighting with its former AG over the AG doing one right thing in his life. Truly the pandemic is to blame.

This is why ghost hunters' devices go nuts & off the scale near breaker boxes. Ghosts like to hide in electrical distribution panels!

People who argue that "we need less government so the taxpayers pay less" are like people who argue "we need looser child pornography laws so we don't prosecute 15 year-olds taking nude selfies".  While their stated excuse may have some merit on its surface, you know that's not the primary reason they want those regulations loosened.

The Deep State will save us!

/the deep state being professional bureaucrats who know how to follow law and court precedents, and even have an inkling of how science works

The fact that Trump is still breathing means the CIA is a bunch of pussies and there is no deep state

The deep state never would have allowed a buffoon like Trump to be in charge.

This is the result of anti-intellectualism, anti-science, gutting of public education and the inherent idea that being born on this soil makes you special

I did - They taught me a bunch of moral philosophy about how to treat other people, but not much about governance past "set for yourself a king" and don't let them enrich themselves or get too proud (Deut 17:15-20).

// so I went with "We, the People...", which seems like a much better plan
// also based on 2-3000 more years of observation of the human capacity for greed and malevolence and ratfarkery of the rules

I was born the week Nixon resigned. I grew up in a time that treated the government like it was a joke - grossy incompetent, wildly wasteful, and needlessly deceitful. The only time people 'found' their faith in Washington was when something big would happen and suddenly they expect the lawmakers to do something to help.

What's the saying? "Hold a circus, you're gonna get clowns?"

We could literally do this with any of the "Death Toll: 100,000" headlines.

Or "it's a shame, my stonks were doing SO well until COVID. Sure, it looks like a short shock was able to crash the system, which doesn't cause me to worry AT ALL about the long-term health of such a system being managed by profit-extractors in the GOP even after COVID, but I really just viscerally don't like how, um 'shrill' and 'opinionated' Hillary is. Also, I am very in touch with my feelings, rarely in denial, and this is not a caricature of pseudo-woke suburban almost-liberals."

Or "the President may have ignored two months of warnings about COVID, but, you know..."

Or "sure the President has taken every possible position on COVID, from 'it'll never get here' to '15 cases, soon nothing', to 'we're working hard on it' to 'based on my science briefings, which I've totally paid attention to by the way, have you tried a Clorox injection?', to 'SHUT UP SCIENTISTS WE'RE DOING THIS LEEEEEROY JENKINS', to 'we can have a vaccine in a few months', to 'who cares about vaccines?', but Hillary Clinton has the same email practices as Colin Powell when he was SecState, Karl Rove and the WH political staff, Scott Walker when he was Governor of WI, and basically every elected or appointed Republican who ever accused Hillary Clinton of a felony.

// HOW many farking dystopian stories have a buffoon - in many cases BASED on Donald farking Trump - fiddling while the country burns, and we went ahead an elected him anyway (shut up, America did and we farking own it. America, fark, yeah...)?
// it'd be ridiculous if it wasn't so sad
// and it'd be more sad if the half the country that wailed and rent garments over Obama's every move wasn't so enraptured with the leader of an objectively terrible response

It is hard to watch but mostly it is an issue of ignorance and tribalism.  Actually it is simple.

The rise of Trump is all about white minority "Christian" rule.  What the Republicans have successfully done through their propaganda channels is convince those white women that only Republicans can keep them safe and only by electing Republicans can their religious institutions be kept safe.   They will hear nothing bad about Trump because they believe the alternative is truly awful.

I would say in addition the internet has made a profound difference on how we view Washington.

Patricia Millner, a nurse in Hershey, Pa., was born the year Dwight D. Eisenhower was re-elected. The economy was booming, and trust was high: When national pollsters began asking the question two years later, about three-quarters of Americans said they trusted the federal government to do the right thing.
A lot has changed since then. Vietnam happened, then Watergate, the 2008 financial crisis,
