Oh, for gods'sakes.

Well, at least they're wearing masks.

Since this was the Post reporting, I imagine their conclusion was '"And therefore, no one should wear masks, ever. Chunk white tuna, labrador retrievers."

This is a dumb article.  They go in to a tailor's shop, a guy who makes bespoke suits that cost $8k.  Ok, so the guy has some seriously expensive fabric around too.  So they of course are going to ask the guy what a mask costs if you make it from the Italian cashmere, and of course the answer is going to be $300.

"cranking out bespoke masks that sell for up to $300 apiece."

I'd pay good money for a custom tailored mask made with good fabrics. I wouldn't pay 300 clams for one, but I'd pay 100 clams for 3, maybe a bit more.

/it's all about the clams

I was kinda hoping there would be a study where the corona virus can remain on facial hair for seven days, or some such thing.

Which would be the final death nail for the hipster beard.

sometime in 2040:

"Gee, Gramps, what's with that douche-y beard in this photo from the 2010s?"

"Well, we thought it looked cool. Then corona virus happened and we all had to shave"

"No Gramps. That never looked cool. Even Rutherford B Hayes looked like a douche sporting that nightmare:"

A beard hate thread!

I too used to dislike facial hair.  Then I grew a beard.  It's not bad and saves a lot of time shaving.

I have shaved it down to stubble for the sake of a mask though.  :(

I took mine off a couple of weeks early because of wearing a mask. Of course this is the year we got snow in May.

Drinking a craft beer at his local bar with no liquor license so it's technically a private club that sells nightly memberships?

This is my first mask, all I had around the house. A Grateful Dead diver-down flag mask with a shoelace tying it all together. Now I have a fishing buffer as a mask.

I say good for him - 50 clams isn't too bad for something you'll get regular use out of for the next 2-3 years, oy.

Today I saw an informercial for a copper infused mask.  Same idiots selling copper knee braces and gloves.  $30 each, but if you act now get one free.  Wondered how long it would take scan artists to make masks.

I like the idea of people buying high-end masks. After the 'rona is over they might be more likely to pop on that fancy mask if they catch a cough or the sniffles.

A beard may make a mask less effective but, it's a cloth mask not an impenetrable barrier with a perfect seal.

I bought a rockstar mask from the hardware on Haight back when the willdfire smoke was a problem last year,
It been sitting in storage.
I lost the exhaust valves for it - but I use paper towel filters in it now - cheap, disposable and from my internet  research one of the five best materials for improvised filter making.
I get a really good seal from elastic/paper towel combination.  But I change out the paper after 15 - 30 minutes.

I think I paid like $25 or $30 for it - no idea how much the regular filters for it are priced now.....

$300 each? Geez, at that price I've made $30,000 worth this weekend for donations to friends and charities. Add up the first couple hundred I did over the past few weeks and I could pay off my house!

Copper makes sense for a mask.  It has excellent antibacterial properties.

I have a lovely, plain, Type C cloth mask I sewed about a month ago (we ran out of my shop masks), and my wife has a matching mask, just in case we need them. I've only used mine once, to get my wife's prescriptions, and I'll have to use it again next month for the same reason.

Spending money for a cloth mask just seems silly. The reason you spend money on shoes is because they serve a purpose, last for many years, and you can repair & care for them to ensure that's the case. A cloth mask takes about an hour to sew (much less, if you make something less complex) and does nothing but act as a handkerchief you don't have to hold, basically. It's not filtering anything (unless you use a Type C and insert a N95 filter, and even that's only marginally more helpful), it's just there so that you don't cough or spit on someone by accident. If you want to make a fashion statement, sure, I guess, but... three hundred bucks?!

Feh. Never fails - for every calamity, there's always someone trying to exploit it.

Bacteria isn't the main concern when wearing a mask

Probably used, re-purposed posing pouches fished out of the dumpster behind the gay gym.

For $300, you could buy a right new sewing machine and some material, and make your own.

I am tired of my van Dyke. I grew it when I retired from the Navy and was wearing it when I met Hubby. He likes it. He looks at me more than I look at me. It makes him happy. He feeds (and other things) me. So, it stays on my face. (Almost 25 years now; probably'll burn off in the crematorium.)

Viruses are not affected by antibacterial properties because they are not bacteria.
