Cool Story:

Chris Swanson was the composer in residence at the Moog Co. and back in 1969 he composed (and played) at the world premier of the Moog syn. He was a well-respected jazz musician and composer. Chris was also my little league baseball coach. I went to school with his children. Mind you, I was raised in very small town in central WI so it was a bit bizarre to have this Grammy-nominated musician not as a local and a baseball coach. He also volunteered at the high school as the jazz band instructor. Beyond all this, he was a good man. RIP, Mr. Swanson.

That pic is a pretty good illustration of why synths were really hugely popular among rock musicians until they started to look like this

There weren't too many synths that actually had mainframes and displays like the Fairlight did.

Yeah, Stevie Winder and Garth Hudson we're shaking in the boots from the competition.  Heck, Geddy Lee was chortling.

Snapper Carr, thanks for that image of Keith Emerson. That he was able to tour with that monster in the early 70's and keep it in tune most of the time is amazing. He got some incredible sounds out of it too.

When friends ask what I'd spend lottery winnings on, #2 after a 1950's 3-pickup Les Paul would be this:

You could have bought one of those for $500 or less in the mid-80's, now they go for $8-12,000. Damn.

I picked up an Oberheim Matrix 12 for $850 back in the early 90s. It's $5K-$8K now. I missed a Fairlight IIcx in the late 90s for $1800. Then passed on one for $3K in about 2003. Then when the Pet Shop Boys listed their Fairlight, I passed at $8K. A refurb'd CMI III came up for sale in 2017 for $12K and I snagged it. Complete retrofit of SCSI2SD and a ton of sample libraries, including those of Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Pet Shop Boys, and Boris Blank's complete library.

I'm still kicking myself for selling a broken ARP 2600 for $50 in about 1988. And I'm also kicking myself for passing on a Jupiter 8 back in 2003 for $3K.

Yup, ironic isn't it? I have a few hard drives full of samples by Spitfire, Heavyocity etc that would be literally impossible to imagine back then. But the chic analog stuff does very little by comparison and brings in the big bucks.

I had a Korg Poly 800 back then, followed by the usual DX crowd and then a Kurzweil.  The good old days.
