Liberals aren't forcing people to wear masks.  They're giving business the FREEDOM to choose to only have masked customers.

And gloves don't work for viruses flying in the air from face to face.  And gloves don't work if you're touching your face with them.  Unless you are at risk for harming your hands or are touching other people, frequent hand washing and sanitizer is just as good as gloves.

Alice in Wonderland woke up normal. But by the time she got to the door of Wonderland, she was no longer her former self. Learn from this.

Waking up in a free country does not guarantee you will still be in one by Noon.

Trump is certainly doing all in his power, him and his minions and supporters from the Republican left to the Furthest Right, to make sure the country you are in is not a free one.

In the mean time, freedom doesn't mean licence to do as you please. It means protection from other people doing as they should not.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. -- Jesus
No not do unto others that which you would not like them to do unto you. - Confucius
Wish for your brother that which you would wish for yourself. -- Mohammed.

The Constitution makes utterly zero mention of gays, abortions, or face masks. It sets the structure and the rules of the Federal and State governments and reserves all powers to the people and states not expressly distributed to the Federal Governent and its officers. That is what "political or constitutional freedoms" mean.

It's a lot of freedoms, but none of them are totally safe or certain from a would-be tyrant with the powers of a Divine Right of Kings Monarch or a dictator, so none of them are guaranted against Trump and tumpery unless you stand up for them and behind them in the real world, not "free speech" or an imaginery virtual forum.

(Didn't bother to read the article.) Nobody with any sense thought that this was a constitutional issue. You have the right of free speech, but that does not include the right to shout, "Fire!" in a crowded theater. You have the right to be with other people, but that does not include the right to catch a possibly deadly disease from them and then give it to others.

No mask no service signs seek to limit the ability of libertarian asstards to kill off their other customers.

You have the right to order your food on instacart and let the rest of us transact safely. We're the ones doing it right, observing social distancing, avoiding unnecessary contact, and wearing masks so if we ARE sick and don't know it (and you can't know it because the federal response to the pandemic has been fark all), we are less likely to infect our fellow man.

You have the right to complain about the rest of us not farking it up from the comfort of your own home. Go ahead. The rest of us will be taking necessary precautions to keep as much of society functioning that can be done safely.

There's a calm way to get such a paid agitator to wear a mask.   The common story in every locale is the guy creating a scene at a Dollar store -- too similar not to be a targeted event.

Tell him his breath smells like shiat.  And you will sue him for assault if he doesn't put on a mask.    You have a law firm on speed dial who is waiting for the call.   Tell him his license plate to let him know he's already been recorded and targeted.

Because only a covidiot would compare something that benefits everyone (abatement of droplet transmission by asymptomatic carriers) with something that does nothing at best and is more likely counterproductive (you can wash your hands, but what are you going to do with those filthy gloves besides trash them and then wash your hands?).

What will be really interesting is the constitutional challenges that come up the next time someone is charged with the anti-mask laws most states have. If the government is mandating masks wouldn't that be entrapment?  If some masks are mandated but others are illegal then the government is applying the law in an unequal manner isn't that a violation of the 14th?

agent00pi: Bowen: Do other countries have this level of widespread derp? If not, what the hell is wrong with us?

It's an AMP link, but here's an interesting take on that.

Author provides some interesting insights, but the article has a weird BSAB thing going.

FTFA: American liberals sometimes treat their belief in science as a kind of religion, Blanchfield argued, fetishizing technocrats and rejoicing when conservatives who do not "believe in science" are punished.
Some liberals have posted comments regretting that they could not wish that participants in "reopen" protests would get coronavirus, because they might infect other, innocent people, Adam Kotsko, a political theorist, said. After Georgia decided to reopen businesses early, despite continued warnings from public health officials, one liberal activist with a large following tweeted "*sips coffee*" as her only comment on an article reporting that Georgia had seen 1,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.
Even as some leftists on Twitter were calling the GOP a "death cult", other leftists were suggesting that the punishment for unbelievers should be death.

So on the one hand: armed crazy people refusing to wear masks, or take shelter during a pandemic, or address the entrenched systematic inequalities that lead to worse health outcomes for poor people or minorities.
On the other hand: utterly exhausted sane people who just want the crazy people to farking stop already.
But yeah...both sides, man.

The Constitution isn't like the repair manual for a 1998 Subaru Outback, where ten mechanics can look at it and come away with the same idea on how to change the starter.

The Supreme Court routinely splits 5-4 on what they think the Constitution means. Obviously if it's something that the top judges in the country find ambiguous, why should we trust the opinion of a single constitutional lawyer?

Because asymptomatic people can spread the virus by just breathing, a mask helps prevents the spread and to some degree prevents a non-covid person from catching it.

Wearing gloves does not stop the spread of Covid19 it only offers limited protection to the user because you still need to practice good hand hygiene while wearing them.

common sense is an oxymoron: vert0: common sense is an oxymoron: vert0: common sense is an oxymoron: docilej: why did the Liberals stop at forcing to make people wear just masks? If you have to wear masks in public then shouldn't the government enforce a glove wearing mandate too? Why one and not the other?

Because only a covidiot would compare something that benefits everyone (abatement of droplet transmission by asymptomatic carriers) with something that does nothing at best and is more likely counterproductive (you can wash your hands, but what are you going to do with those filthy gloves besides trash them and then wash your hands?).

When is the last time you left your house?  I work in a warehouse with prolly 800 people total, no problem.

At what distance from your coworkers?  Do you wear masks?  Gloves?  Employer-provided or personal choice?

As for me, I get out nearly every day for shopping and/or exercise and wear a mask where social distancing might be problematic, mainly stores and crowded sidewalks.

I think i said before, a warehouse.

All that bs is enforced.  Do you even know what a warehouse looks like in this day?

Must be nice to be able to shop every other day.  Would be awesome to be that fortunate.  I'm a Chef and had to get a new job.

Good on you.

Yes, I'm fortunate to have pretty much the ultimate in job security, but calling protective measures bullshiat doesn't help anyone except maybe the bastards at the top who just received thirteen figures' worth of wealth redistribution.  Are you willing to die for the Dow?

Why you keep looking at other mans money?

Because no one knew enough about the virus to come to any conclusions. Now, we know more and can update the knowledge, such as the CDC saying today that it's less likely than previously believed that one can get the virus through surfaces. NYS did the pretty much the same thing when a certain manufacturer offered to ramp up production with a million square feet of factory space. Cuomo would rather people die than take help from it. The proof was in the fact that he was still complaining about a lack of medical supplies after getting the letter offer from that company. Either it was an intentional ignoring of the offer or he missed it because he was too busy killing seniors by forcing COVID positive patients into nursing homes. Either way, it was pretty sick.

Why the change? Over 90,000 people in the USA, changed their Face Book status to "Dead".

Seriously, I think they realized now, that this virus was a little worse that the last one. Also, people would probably have bought up all the masks, with nothing left for the "Essentials".  Now that restrictions are being lifted, the production has been ramped up, why not wear one? Either way, I wear a mask because it just seems like the right thing to do for myself and everyone else when I go into a customers home. I don't know if it helps , but I do know it doesn't hurt.

If you thought they were effective but wanted to reserve them for health care then say so, tell people to make their own masks from the beginning because health care workers need them most because of exposure. Don't tell people they don't work and then reverse that, you do nothing but sow mistrust and doubt.

It's pretty ethnocentric to think that Americans are the only ones who do stupid things.

....  while there are definitely other people who do dumb shiat, they're usually a lot smaller of a minority, and they're not as loud.  Americans are ignorant and damn proud because it's our RIGHT.  So you'll see other people doing it in other places, but they aren't marching in their Capitol's demanding their rights not be infringed and claiming it's their choice.  They just go about their business not following instructions and keeping their heads down.

I'm going to find it ironic when these idiots who have done this want to go back to work once everything opens back up but a lot of businesses are going to be running loaner because the rest of the world has us blocked from travel and doing business with them because people couldn't give a damn about just sitting at home or wearing PPE when they went out and now international business and trade from US is ground to a halt.

I'm already seeing it with my company whose HQ are in Germany.  We've been chugging along, but clients abroad are specifically not ordering from the US and while the US locations have been the top earners worldwide for the past 5 years out of 26 worldwide locations, the US locations have had to cut back production while Germany, Italy, and France have had to pick up the Slack because the people we supply DON'T want to do business with the US branches.

shiat, you're right, this is a slippery slope.  Next thing they'll make you wear bubble wrap when out walking and helmets in cars.  This is an outrage!  The liberals are out to control every aspect of our lives.  First masks then what?

The answer is because you don't have soft tissue mucous membranes on your hands, unless you go rubbing your face and sucking your fingers, as long as you sanitize your hands youre good.

Masks keep your spittle in your face hole areas, and it also filters said droplets that do escape if you breath it in.  So if you're a carrier, even asymptomatic it reduces the spread by quite a lot, and if you're not sick but near people who are it can filter the intake by a lot.

Your hands can be easily sanitized, but you can't go around snorting or gargling rubbing alcohol to sanitize your face area constantly.

Because everyone here apart from YOU understands just fine that wearing a mask isn't to protect THEM from the virus, it's to prevent THEM spreading the virus to others.

See, one can spread the virus just by breathing, and putting a barrier between your face and the outside world, you are stopping the droplets of water in your breath from infecting others.

But that is a two way street is what the above poster was stating.  The same people who supported the cake maker are now saying it's against their freedumbs, well, it's the same farking idea.

Don't tell people they don't work and then reverse that, you do nothing but sow mistrust and doubt.

I hear ya. One part of my service work is to clean dryer ducts. Very fine waxy partials that get into your lungs if you don't were a mask. So, I always have a stock of masks. What I remember customers in the health field say, was  "lesser" masks don't help for what is coming in ( virus -wise), more for what is coming out of a person. But, I have had some  non-medical customers say they don't help all together. Either way, if wearing a mask is useless, I will gladly admit to it. I have plenty, so it's no big deal with me. I think too many people are focused on "being right", then "what is right".

The wearer of the mask is not protected by the mask. It reduces the chance that the wearer will infect anyone else. If you do not wear a mask into a public place, you are denying me the right to NOT get infected by you.

Now, whose rights are being stepped on? Hmmm?

Bowen: Do other countries have this level of widespread derp? If not, what the hell is wrong with us?

In most countries the constitution is simply a set of ground rules for how government operates - when elections are held, how many people get elected, that sort of thing - and is more or less irrelevant to daily life. It seems to be mainly a US thing to use the constitution as a substitute for normal laws either directly (18th Amendment) or indirectly (Roe vs Wade, Hodges vs Obergefell).

As a result, the US constitution plays a far bigger role in your lives than the UK constitution (we do have one, contrary to popular belief) does in mine or the German Grundgesetz does in the lives of my cousin there. It's also much more of a political issue - which, almost by definition, a constitution shouldn't be. None of prohibition, abortion on demand or equal marriage had popular support and so the constitution was used to get them through. That's saying nothing about the merits of each cause, just that you use your constitution as a substitute for debate, convincing people and democracy generally, so it's no surprise that people objecting to masks turn to it to find a way out.

shiat, you're right, this is a slippery slope.

When I was in high school, my American Government teacher was a Constitutional expert. One of the things he drilled into us about the First Amendment is that it basically boils down to this: You have the right to do whatever you want, however you want, wherever you want, as long as doing so doesn't infringe on anyone else's right to the exact same thing. Masks boil down to exactly this, even before you get to the concept of "it's a farking private business and they can tell you whatever they want."

If you are refusing to do something that protects others from spreading a disease, ESPECIALLY one which has a long incubation period and has a good possibility of being asymptomatic, then you are infringing upon my right to not get the disease, which would take way my inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Bottom line - rights go both ways, no matter how much the selfish people in the world want it to not be the case.

I'm an appliance tech, I go into about 40 to 50 homes a week. Along with a mask, I wash my hands after every call, at the end of the day I sanitize my van with disinfectant or a UVC light. I just assume every house is infected. I've always been cautious about spreading stuff around, from cockroaches to colds.

Sorry about the misunderstanding.

bobobolinskii: 12349876: docilej: why did the Liberals stop at forcing to make people wear just masks? If you have to wear masks in public then shouldn't the government enforce a glove wearing mandate too? Why one and not the other?

Liberals aren't forcing people to wear masks.  They're giving business the FREEDOM to choose to only have masked customers.

And gloves don't work for viruses flying in the air from face to face.  And gloves don't work if you're touching your face with them.  Unless you are at risk for harming your hands or are touching other people, frequent hand washing and sanitizer is just as good as gloves.

Better, gloves get dirty too, look up cross contamination, so if you wear gloves and either touch nothing or replace them every time you touch something they're useless.

When you're handling things you will not be handling later with the gloves off, they are parsecs away from useless.  When you're handling things that can be cleaned later before ungloved touching, they are parsecs away from useless.  When you're handling things with surfaces that have viruses on them from people breathing all over them, they are not useless.

THIS.

I'm a conservative. I'm also highly literate in science. I've frequently argued over the effectiveness of masks with both liberals and conservatives. Their stance has been that even an N95 mask is ineffective against a virus which is small enough to penetrate it. My stance is that Covid-19 is NOT an airborne virus, it exists on tiny water droplets that are aerosolized when a person coughs or sneezes, which the N95 and even simple cloth masks ARE effective at stopping at BOTH transmission points (from the infected person wearing a mask and to the uninfected person wearing a mask. Even if there is SOME penetration, we know that there is a threshold amount of virus particles one must receive (>?, that probably varies due to many factors including immune system, age, blood type, co-morbidities) to become infected.

If you didn't let the news do your thinking for you or maybe watched or read something other than the one or two same sources, you would have known that your statement bolded above is factually incorrect. You just haven't been exposed to it or are ignoring it or are lying. Shiat, people were on this website biatching about the Cuomo death order practically since the day he issued it.

So many decisions that Cuomo made had the effect to kill people including forcing people to take their reusable bags into grocery stores slathered with the rona.  I'll be generous and say that they were not intentional for killing and instead say the guy is just either callous towards lives that he gives no shiats about (people who vote for not him or the "little people" like cashiers) or has less brains than Trumpy. Either way, leftists are circling the wagons around him to try and cover up his farkups to keep him as a viable PrezCan. You are part if that whether you know it or not by coming up in here and spreading lies about how Cuomo didn't do what he did. It"s in the standard liberal playbook. Keep repeating a lie often and widely. There are enough rubes out there who don't check anything and will believe it. Go look at the Faceplace. It's filled with it.

Nullav: myth321: Nullav: myth321: Nullav: Doesn't matter. See freeze peach. Nope, these poor widdle snowflakes can't get over having that slight itch behind their ears, the extra sweat under their noses, having to be considerate to others in any capacity whatsoever, or being told what to do by anyone who isn't on TV or wearing a badge.

I prescribe open mockery and swift kicks in the jimmies.

Since, you're prescribing assault, I'd say let's just bring this to a head real quick.
If they don't start walking to the exit, within 10 seconds, after asking them to leave,
blast them in the face with bear spray. Added bonus, it will paint their face orange.

I know, I know, the mist will go all over the place. But what are you going to do with a grown man,
laying on the floor, clutching his jimmies in the fetal position?  Maybe, 10 sec, taser taser taser,
then open (taser) mockery.

I get that you're trying to drag it into absurdity, but y'know what? If you want to risk those around you because you don't want to wear a mask in the middle of a pandemic, then go ahead and take in every awful thing the world wants to throw at you for being a shiatbag, or just stop being a shiatbag. Put on a mask, or walk out and stop being a cock about it. Also, jumping from mockery to tasing? Holy shiat, you are reaching.

I'm not about to forget that some of the same people talking about how wearing masks is oppression are also the same ones who were talking an awful lot more about what they could use their gun collections for when this whole mess started rolling in.

I was being serious. I would like to see (someone else) blast one of these people in the face with bear spray. I'm so sick of these self centered people. I understand why people act out like this, I just don't see what it truly gains. It just seems superficial.

As I said up thread, I wear a mask. I personally don't care if I catch it and die, I just don't want to be remembered as a "shiatbag" that made a lot of people sick or dead. I' ...

No worries. Everyone seems to be a little on edge with this. I use humor, but sometimes it get lost with just text.

Bowen: Do other countries have this level of widespread derp? If not, what the hell is wrong with us?

"American Exceptionalism".

Been drilled into our heads since 1776.  Like Bill Murray's character in "Stripes" said, "Our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country on Earth.  We're mutts."  And so, we have a big inferiority complex about being viewed as anything less than the BEST country on Earth, especially after WW2, and despite every reasonable metric showing the US to be far down on the list.

Read most American accounts of WW2, and it was the Normandy invasion that meant the end of Germany.  However, there would have been no Normandy invasion if the Russians hadn't tied up so many German soldiers and so much German equipment on the Eastern Front.  The Russians paid a steep price to do that: 30-40% fatality rate of Russian soldiers.

The question these FREEDUMB folks need to ask is, "How did the US go from being the #1 creditor nation in 1945 to the #1 debtor nation in 1985?"  We've added $4T+ to the national debt in the past 3 years alone, but you don't hear the MAGAts, or the GOP as a whole, complaining about that.

Follow the money.  Your Constitutional rights are worth squat in a broke and broken (infrastructure) country.

Mikeyworld: Serious Post on Serious Thread: Jeebus Saves: The amount of you farkers that think a mask is keeping you safe is beyond hilarious.

I'd like to cough on you. That's cool right?

The wearer of the mask is not protected by the mask. It reduces the chance that the wearer will infect anyone else. If you do not wear a mask into a public place, you are denying me the right to NOT get infected by you.

Now, whose rights are being stepped on? Hmmm?

We're not talking about public places. We're talking about private businesses, which are considered quasi-public places, and have a different set of rules. I know I'm botching the legal details, but I'm close.

So if I'm running a gun store and choose to allow people to come in with loaded weapons, that endangers other customers, but I'm fully allowed to do that legally. In fact, many Missouri gun stores are like that. There's a higher standard for private businesses, and right now a lot of the businesses in Jefferson County (redneck hellhole west of St. Louis), have already called the government's bluff, and the police are doing jack when people are refusing to wear masks.

dkulprit: Colorado case where a bakery refused to make a cake for a gay wedding. The conservative stance was basically "private businesses can deny service based on ideology."  And it won, which I'm fine with.  A private business is a private business, and the free market will do it's thing.

But that is a two way street is what the above poster was stating.  The same people who supported the cake maker are now saying it's against their freedumbs, well, it's the same farking idea.

Private business can discriminate on ideology as long as it is not a protected class.

Here's the fault with your logic: there are many places in the US where there is only a single provider for a particular service.  Small town of 500 may have only one grocery store, one funeral home, one private hospital, one private nursing home, etc.  How easy it would be to run out every minority, gay, etc., simply by those sole providers refusing service.

The bakery case was a poor test case to bring to SCOTUS.  Refresh my memory:  did the gay men request anything unusual for their cake?  Did they ask for the small figures of the bride and groom to be replaced with small figures of 2 men blowing each other?

Refusing to decorate a cake with obscene or patently offensive material (and those are issues themselves) would be reasonable.  Refusing to provide any cake whatsoever is unreasonable.  IMHO, the bakery should have made the cake, but left any "final touches" they found offensive to the buyers.  If I owned a bakery and someone wanted a swastika on it, I'd reply, "I'll make the cake, but I'll leave it to you to put on the swastika because I find that symbol to be offensive."  The customer than has the option to buy only the cake, or to find a bakery that will add the swastika.

If a customer had left the bakery with a blue & white frosted cake, without any additional decorations, and the gay couple had said, "Make us one just like that!", then the bakery should have made it.

dittybopper: Meh.  Ask more than one.  In fact, ask 9 of them, and you'll get 12 different opinions.  That's kind of the problem.  Outside of some very basic stuff, constitutional law has been farked up the ass by lawyers for about 230 years now.  It's a short document written in plain, non-legalese English.  A person of average intelligence can easily understand what it says.  It shouldn't require years of advanced study.

So, person of average intelligence, what does the phrase "A well-regulated militia" mean to you with regard to the 2nd Amendment?  The Heller decision didn't say a word about that part of the 2nd, and I'd wager almost every SCOTUS justice** is of average intelligence.

/Oxford commas are a biatch.

Mrtraveler01: desertgeek: DrewCurtisJr: Keith Dudemeister: Take a second and really ponder the depth of idiocy it takes to be this offended about wearing a mask during a global pandemic.

Only a few months ago the "experts" were telling us that wearing a mask during a global pandemic was ineffective. If it was really that simple why the change?

Because no one knew enough about the virus to come to any conclusions. Now, we know more and can update the knowledge, such as the CDC saying today that it's less likely than previously believed that one can get the virus through surfaces. That's how science works: you update your information based on solid evidence.

Part of me really thinks they said that because they were trying go stop people from hoarding the N95 masks leaving very little for the hospitals.

The fact our supply chain for PPEs was strained at that point

This is exactly why they were pushing social distancing instead of masks at that point.  They said so.  They knew there would be a run on masks just as surely as there was a run on toilet paper.  It's why they still say that N95 is for medical professionals and surgical and DIY are for the public.

I just don't understand what the big issue is with wearing the mask. I actually like wearing mine. It makes a lot of sense to me-obviously it's not 100% protective but if I cough or sneeze or if I'm around someone who does, mine and their droplets are more contained than if we weren't wearing them. Everything is slightly more sanitary.  I have a collection of reusable ones with fabrics representing my favorite fandoms etc. and I've seen a lot of people out and about with equally interesting ones for their teams or favorite band or whatever. You can buy them online for under $10 or make them yourself out of a repurposed shirt. It just seems like such a petty, ridiculous thing to get outraged over.
