The thing about exponential growth is that is doesn't seem like the number of cases is growing very fast until the number of cases grow very fast.

2020-05-22 2:18:05 PM
Give it 2-4 weeks.

If they don't lie about the numbers.

2020-05-22 2:35:38 PM
We are partially reopened around here.

Thing is most people are sticking to home and not packing into anything much yet.

So the added spread will be slower. But given no real testing, it will be happening.

So I suspect you get a continuing drumbeat of new cases rather than a downslope.  And if people decide "it's over" then big groups form and spread accelerates.

We might get lucky to have slow spread with folks mostly gathering outdoors during summer, buying time to find treatments.

But I pray workplaces adapt to protect workers, we do need the economy to start moving again. So a lot depends on employers too. (Ugh)

Let's talk about the fact that there are no more ICU beds in Alabama.

Just got an email from Universal.  Opening here in Orlando next week.  That should help.

A lot of people don't seem to understand exponential growth. Case counts expand slowly, and then all at once.

The entire thing is the catastrophe, with nearly 100k dead. That it isn't a more of a catastrophe is just a matter of time.

Well, if you need a good excuse to stay out of Texas, Floriduh and Georgia, there you go.

The economy isn't going to recover sufficiently for most people this year.

The world isn't ending, it's just gonna be a giant bummer for a couple years.

This may be the saddest picture I have seen lately, and I love poker...I guess gamblers gonna gamble, even if it means putting their own life on the felt.

"Who are these people, these faces? Where do they come from? They look like caricatures of used car dealers from Dallas, and sweet Jesus, there were a hell of a lot of them at 4:30 on a Sunday morning, still humping the American dream, that vision of the big winner somehow emerging from the last minute pre-dawn chaos of a stale Vegas casino."

That "article" is basically "if you completely ignore the rise in cases and deaths and the fact that Georgia was caught fudging their numbers to seem lower than they really were, the states that opened back up are doing great!  Checkmate, libs!"

How many is a catastrophe? When Obama was president, just a half dozen Americans dying was unacceptable, yet now tens of thousands is perfectly fine. If you don't define it, you can easily make claims like this.

"...have seen new cases and deaths largely hold steady since then..."

Careful.  Don't set the bar too f$cking high.  Great accomplishment.  Great success.  "How's the cancer doctor."  "I'm happy to report it is spreading at a good steady rate."

Anyone who thinks a Vegas casino is going to be a YUUGGGEEEE winner is demonstrating they're an idiot. The House makes sure they have the edge and, unless you're blowing ridiculous amounts of money regularly, that you get kicked if you start winning too much.

I could easily count cards, the math is easy and I have a near eidetic memory. I also know that the instant I start doing that, and winning larger amounts, that I'll be "asked" to leave because I ruin their advantage.

As my Grandma told me many times, go ahead, gamble, have fun. Bring the money you're going to loose, and when you do, leave.
She also taught me how to handicap horse racing-which I became rather good at. Otherwise, unlike a number of family members, never got the gambling bug.

Talk to you again in a month.

2020-05-22 3:27:04 PM

cretinbob: Give it a couple of weeks

Yep, they've been saying that about Florida for 2 months. Catastrophe is perpetually right around the corner.  They just keep running the same article hoping it'll eventually be true about Florida when the real tragedy of how New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania handled the nursing homes get buried.

This should be obvious to anyone:

>If the country shows a strong recovery in the next 6 months, Trump will get some of the credit.
>Lifting lockdowns will likely result in a strong recovery
>The "respected" media is completely one-sided against lifting lockdowns because more crisis equals more ratings for them and less chance Trump gets credit for the recovery.

Does anyone really think the media is acting in good faith here?

2020-05-22 3:27:41 PM
I think you won't see a rise for at least a month.  The people that downplay corona always mockingly say "they said 2 weeks ", but if you slowed down the spread and only handful are infected in a area it's going to take more than 2 weeks for it to take hold reestablish itself. the case count could remain steady until its too late and they have multiple outbreaks and clusters again then they they will point to a certain place or area and say this is where it started over a months ago

LarryDan43: They were all set to explain the year over year increases in total deaths on suicides because of stay at home orders. What will they explain it on now that states are reopening?

They'll claim the numbers have been artificially inflated.  Lockdown and social distancing will cause the number of flu cases this year to be lower.  They will say the decrease in flu deaths is proof that they were categorizing flu deaths as coronavirus deaths.

GrinzGrimly: how New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania handled the nursing homes get buried.

You forgot Texas.  Texas is refusing to let people know which nursing homes have covid-19 infections despite having over 300 deaths. People putting their older families members in nursing home may be condemning them to an agonizing death due to not having that information.  But Abbott has to protect the nursing home profits.

I'm in Georgia and I have customers who work for the CDC, our county health department and the surgeon general's office. When I ask them if our numbers are correct, 2 started laughing hysterically and the other one said, "Not only are they not correct, they're purposely delaying the counts by two weeks". She was pissed and there's nothing she can do about it.

Oh my gosh, if Texas continues at this rate they'll catch up to New York in just 38 short months!

Maybe you're being sincere in your wish for luck, but seems like 99% of Farkers would prefer to see a climbing death toll in states that are reopening because it fits the narrative they want to be true. WTF is wrong with you people? Openly rooting against recovery because it might make conservative politicians including Trump look better than the clowns running the northeast into the ground (who even in their hearts' want to see Texas succeed so the federal government can tax the piss out of them to bail out NY's failing pension system.)

Municipalities and states enacted social distancing guidelines and lockdowns to slow the spread of the virus.  The spreading of the virus slowed.  Therefore, that was stupid.  Airtight logic.

For some gambling like poker tournaments and horse racing, the "house" doesn't care if you win or lose.  They get their cut of the bets at the beginning and the plebes are fighting each other for the rest, and smart ones can bleed the dumb ones dry.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!! I needed that laff!
Basically it involves how many times the horse has been raced over the span of about 6-9 months, the jockey and the track. There are a few other variables too, that gets too tedious to read.
No sledgehammers! Though, I'm no fan of Lasix....
