we were thin because we were young and poor and we hadn't gotten jobs writing html yet. Then the internet interneted and we all got jobs and amazingly quit working in bookstores

Yes, because its 1998.

Kind of my point- they're still putting up new sets every day.   The stream of hot alt women never ends.

Also... FARK I'm old.

/It's still real to me, dammit.

Im old as shiat too but damn dude theres free porn to be had.
Moving pictures.
When I was a kid the only place to get porn was in the woods. Because that's where people would hide it. And it was usually a two year old, rain swollen, faded copy of GENT with all the pages stuck together. And we were more than happy to have it.

From the wiki for World Goth Day:
World Goth Day originated in the United Kingdom in 2009. BBC Radio 6 was looking at a number of music subcultures throughout a week in May, including Goth music. Goth DJs Cruel Britannia and Martin Oldgoth declared it Goth day.

and then this paved the way to acid house and the mid90s race scene and techno as arming van Buren knows it. Weird to think Above and Beyond trace their heritage to nitzer and 242.

And surely homage ought also be paid to Skinny Puppy, the evil mad geniuses of the electronic world? That those kooky Canucks were able to create things like First Aid, Warlock, assimilate, testure using those hella primitive 1st generation synths is nothing short of brilliant.  A lot of their stuff holds up pretty well to this day

We could go back to (at least) the original illustrations created by Charles Addams in the 1930s. According to Wikipedia, he also made training films for the Army in WW2, LOL. I think most people would consider the Addams Family pretty gothy.

I've always thought of "goth" as something more than music or fashion. YMMV

Brandi Morgan: IMO

If you want goth, read Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite

[Fark user image 173x292]

Much prefer Drawing Blood, complete with the scrach-n'-sniff experience:

Levin-watchers thought our hero would be hard put to outdo this pinnacle of good taste, but they underestimated him. In 1994 his catalogue asked a trifling $600 for "THE MOST HORRIFYING COPY OF ANY VAMPIRE NOVEL". This was Poppy Z. Brite's Drawing Blood in a very, very rare state. Thanks to the helpful chap who'd committed suicide by setting fire to himself with a Molotov cocktail right next to a US mailbox containing copies of the limited edition, the book was lovingly catalogued as: "Odor of burning human flesh otherwise fine in slipcase."
The author herself commented: "It would be a wonderful experience to read the book cover-to-cover with the odor of burned human flesh rising from it. I'm a pretty fast reader, so the smell wouldn't have time to dissipate."

Elder goth here. Hung out at ManRay when I lived in the Boston area back in the day. Remember going to art shows at Fools Mansion in Salem. I spend more time in NY these days and still shop at Trash & Vaudeville every time I'm in the village and I'm glad it still exists even though Obscura doesn't.

Anyway you know what's really goth? Just being yourself and not judging people by their taste in music or clothing. Like that's fine when you are a 15 year old figuring out your place in the world, I guess. But if you are a 30 year old adult and you still sneer at people for not fitting every cartoonish stereotype of your subculture you need to seriously get a grip on your priorities. I love me some Cruxshadows but I will jam to Britney any day of the week.

It is okay to like more than one thing. There's actually an absurdly huge amount of crossover between fans of goth aesthetics and Disney theme parks. Who knew? Also, many of us have jobs. The guy who runs one of the biggest goth club nights in my area is a veteran and an ER surgical nurse. He's also a sports fan.

It's almost as if people can be multifaceted.
