I set up a rule once in gmail to delete a bunch of garbage I wanted to get rid of.  I wound up deleting my entire inbox full of email.  Fortunately I quickly figured out how to get them back.  It was a stressful few minutes.

Never delete anything. Storage is cheap.

Also, I wouldn't want to get rid of those mp3 sharing rings we had around here back in the day. That's a gold mine.

If you have that many unread emails, it really doesn't matter if you delete them. You were never going to look at them anyway.

Damn it!  Do I have to send him my script for "Jurassic Park Goes to Miami" for a fifth time?

Oh, he can probably get his emails to come back. After all, who doesn't like a good comeback story?

Not yet, anyhow.  Soon somebody will realize he married a Kennedy descendant, and he'll be hauled up to the Hill for thirteen hours.

Given that he's unfortunately a Republican and a conservative Christian, I have no doubt this is only one of many stupid things he does on a daily basis.

I remember once I walked into one of my computer classes in college, forget which one, but it was a lab being done in the library or whatever for that day, and someone had been keeping track of the statistic of most emails sitting on a student account up on a white board in there, and it was like Most Unread Emails: 8521, and I checked my account on a whim and it was me.

Of course, I had it set up to auto-forward everything to my actual email, but it was one of those deals where it forwards but still deposits it unread into the account.

Yep, Gmail never actually deletes anything, it archives them.  Other mail services on the other hand will keep only a certain number of emails or a certain amount of MBs in the trash can. After that every time something is added they delete the oldest item. So dumping 51,000 emails in the trash would result in a slow but inevitable drain that would end up leaving just the few hundred most recent that could be recovered.

Gmail does delete what you delete (actually, what you put in the trash and then empty the trash folder). However, it provides enough storage that you don't actually need to delete anything, and can just archive.
