Actually Jacqueline Toboni would be good.  We already know she has the action chops.

I was going to say similar about Stephanie Beatriz but then I've never seen Batgirl or any other Arrowverse TV show i just know that her character on Brooklyn 99 is pretty great.

Isn't insisting that the actress who plays the next Batwoman has to be gay sort of discriminatory? This isn't the same as me saying that the only kind of porn I watch is lesbian+college, which it is but it doesn't affect anyone's career.

How do you prove this? If I'm hiring someone, even *considering* asking questions about their sexuality would get me in front of HR and in deep shiat before the minute was up.

a lot of those look alright, but are you going to get better writers?

How about hiring actors based on their talent, not their sexuality?

How about Zachary Quinto, he did a great job as Spock so could make a great Batwoman, right?   I mean it is wrong to discriminate between sexual designations like actor and actress so there should be no line between gay and lesbian.

Because nobody else is hiring them for leading roles.

The showrunners want to make sure there's at least one.

Damn. The author takes their comic books seriously. In 2000 years Ruby Rose comics might be that era's Iliad.

Why limit it to only LGBT actresses? not for nothing but since they are already pretending to be a costumed vigilante in a fictional city fighting completely implausible villains, couldn't they just get a straight woman would could also pretend to be gay?

Ruby Rose wasn't "horrible" in the role.  I mean, she's not the best actor ever, but she's not horrible.  She just never struck me as a Batwoman type - she's too fragile-looking.  Maybe it's her body type, or something, but she just doesn't look like someone who can do the things they show Batwoman doing.

They need someone with more of an athletic build.  Melissa Benoist "looks" like Supergirl.  She's broader shouldered, a bit more muscular looking.  She looks the part.  Ruby Rose never looked the part (to me), even with the batsuit on

Sorry, I thought "equality" meant not discriminating against anyone.

This isn't really an issue I'm passionate about, I'm mostly joking. I love lesbians and I truly believe that all women are inherently at least bisexual (I'm not joking, I'm dead serious about that). It's just that a producer outright saying "I want a lesbian" seems a little inconsistent with the whole equality thing.

Would you be cool with telling Tarantino saying he won't cast Travolta in Pulp Fiction because he needed a straight guy for the role of Vincent?

It's become a publicity stunt unto itself, usually to prolong a show that's not very good.

Look at Jim Parsons. Dude absolutely crushed his part in that new "Hollywood" series, but he doesn't get roles because he's a gay actor. He gets them because he's a good actor with a lot of range.

Ruby sold her action movie skills pretty well in John Wick 2, but she was also playing a mute. Her problem isn't her build or the role's physicality. Her problem is with her emotional range and delivery of dialogue (which wasn't very good in the episodes I saw, but that's a whole other problem).

Do they though? Michael Keaton was the best Batman IMO, not because he could do as many push ups as Christian Bale but because he was sort of a nutjob. Not Joker-crazy but just off-kilter, like Batman should be. And the fact that he wasn't Vin Diesel made him more heroic.

I like the aforementioned Ellen Page if they have to go hetero-phobic in their casting.

This is the perfect opportunity to reboot with a gender-swapped bat woman.

I don't watch the show but I've seen enough promotional material to know that they need someone with some muscles.

I cannot remember the show or movie but I remember sometime last year seeing a woman playing a soldier who had an impressive enough build that I remarked about it to my wife and it was such a welcome change that my feelings about the movie or show were boosted by it. It wasn't whoever plays Roberta Draper or Linda Hamilton, her arms were bigger and she looked great in the role.

Wish I could remember.

I'd expand that to everyone's a bit bi, and life is partly about finding out where you lie on the spectrum.

But perhaps I'm just saying too much about myself by saying that.

It's just that a producer outright saying "I want a lesbian" seems a little inconsistent with the whole equality thing.

But the character is gay. Perhaps having a gay woman play the character can give insight into the character that a straight woman could not. It's not really a good example, since the profession of acting in general probably has a higher percentage of LGBTQ representation than the general public, but the wider question would be about people playing roles outwith their own type.

And that gets you into wider discussions about acting in general. Take the "method" school of acting; who's the better actor? The one who can turn a character on and off, or the one who has to live in the role for the entire length of the job?

But I digress.

Would you be cool with telling Tarantino saying he won't cast Travolta in Pulp Fiction because he needed a straight guy for the role of Vincent?

Vincent's sexuality isn't a key part of Pulp Fiction, though. Kate Kane is a lesbian, and her past relationships have been an important part of Batwoman.

Even if that were true, for a producer or director to outright say, "I want a homosexual" doesn't seem discriminatory, even if it were true?

Vincent's sexuality isn't a key part of Pulp Fiction, though.

Sure it was. Vincent had an agonizing internal monolog on whether or not he should sleep with Mia or risk getting thrown out a window and fark up how a n***a talked. He wouldn't be invited back to Mia's house in the first place if there wasn't an attraction. The sexual tension between the two was a driving part of the narrative and Travolta faked it.

I think there's a number of folks looking past the point the CW is trying to make by looking for an actress from the LGBT crowd. The CW seems to be pretty big on diversity, hell they have a trans actress playing a trans character that is prominently featured in the show. That's kinda big, even these days. The folks running the network seem to put an emphasis on representation, so in a way it makes sense to have an LGBT actress playing the part of an LGBT character.

Casting is inherently discriminatory. A 90 year old white guy cannot play the character of a role that's a young Asian woman.

Fair enough. I haven't seen Pulp Fiction in decades.

/Besides, John Travolta's been portraying straight characters for most of his career.

Ok. That's exactly the same. Gay actors can't play a straight character and vice vera without makeup or VFX. You win, I give up.
