How long does alcohol last before going bad?

There, saved you a click.

I guess it depends on what it's mixed with. I mean there are some very old whiskey out there.

Yeah, considering I can buy it fast enough, I doubt this would be a concern.

Didn't we already discuss $10bn of lost beer in kegs that were not able to be sold due to the 'rona?

WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE BEER?

I would be impressed if it was written by her Jeanine Pirro.

Beer goes bad in a few months, well stored wine bottles can last centuries. Flavored spirits can fade as the flavoring elements break down over time, but your barrel aged spirits don't age well in the bottle.

2020-05-22 5:55:36 AM
I still say they should run that unsold beer through a still to recover that 3% ABV to use as hand sanitizer

I'm sure Judge Jeanine is the reason they have to ask this question.

If you're letting booze sit until you're worried if it's spoiled, you are clearly not paying enough attention to what's going on.

Liberal elites like Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi would have you believe that for many alcohols improve with age. This is just a trick by the wine, scotch, and bourbon industry to move old stock don't be taken in.  Drink only Fox News MAGA Corn Squezings now with less than 2% methanol.

I was under the impression that liquor is fine, anything flavored, with added sugars etc, is not?

Vodka, fine.
Cotton Candy flavored Pinnacle?  Goes bad.

I'm always confused about Kahlua.  I can't find a definitive answer on how long that lasts.  Anyone?

The morning of September 11, my friends and I panic-bought a bunch of liquor, because we had NO idea what TF was going to happen.  And I mean we bought a LOT.  The four of us spent about $500, which was insane for a quadrille of college students.

One of my less inspired purchases was a bottle of root beer schnapps.  It wasn't the worst liqueur in existence, but it wasn't something you either drank a lot of, or mixed with many other things.
I tried for years to find ways to work on that bottle.

I finally used the last third of it in the course of making a bunch of Jello shots for a Super Bowl party...between the Giants and the Patriots.  The second one.  It took me just over a full decade to dispose of that bottle.  And while it was just as awkward of a flavor as the day I bought the bottle, it never went "bad".

So if anyone wants to know the shelf life of a bottle of root beer schnapps, it's at least ten years.

Sorry, does not compute for me.

Except for a two 6 packs of beer that was bad when I bought it, St Pauli Girl and Moosehead. I have never had to consider that question in over 50 years of drinking as I never let it sit long enough to worry.

I just opened a bottle of 1997 Riesling that had been properly cared for and it was smooth as silk.

I don't think I have ever tasted a wine that old but it was perfect.

Not all wines will last that long. As Mrs. Carte says, "I'm so old I don't wait for wine to age. If I can't drink it in the car on the way home I don't want it."

Also from experience I really don't think barrel aged spirits like Bourbon get better or worse once bottled. Actually I am pretty sure there is no change at all. I have had Bourbon's and whiskeys  up to 5 years or so after bottling with no effects whatsoever.

I also have always had a large bottle of blackberry brandy that I refill smaller bottles for which I only drink in winter when sick and the larger bottles last me up to 3 years never an issue.

Since this COVID mess and my ass backwards state liquor laws my former stockpile is down to just 3 bottle of Bourbon all over 10yrs and 120 barrel proof easily and my leftover 1/2 bottle of bb brandy.

So at my age anything I buy in future will be good if it isn't drank before I die it will last long after I am gone and unfortunately probably be poured out.

No better news questions huh?

Ironically, IPA's were originally brewed for that very purpose. Also, while barrel aged spirits do stop aging once they're bottled, properly stored they have a very, very long and stable shelf life.

Since beer has a wide range of alcohol levels, how long it's good for varies from months to decades.  A typical left Coast IPA loses its flavor and aroma in a couple months. An imperial stout or Abby ale that's 10% ABV or more just gets better for decades.

The question least asked:

"I've heard dogs align themselves to the magnetic north and south when they poop.  Mine doesn't always do that.  Should I be concerned?"

FarkingChas: So how long does one of those 5 gallon boxes of that "premium" :) wine last in the refrigerator once it is open?

The thing about boxed wine is that the bag inside collapses as the wine is dispensed. This limits the oxidation of the wine and extends its shelf life. The Mrs. and I keep a box of cabernet in an unrefrigerated cabinet and it can last a week or more. It's just our everyday dinner wine. Good bottled wine is for special occasions.

/bourbon is for medicinal purposes ;)
//we live next to a craft brewery where we get free beer. We rarely go there more than once a week.

Well, we know from experimentation, that Scotch will last 102 years if stored in a cold dark place.

I have taste-tested scotch and bourbon in freshly-opened bottles against bottles opened for a few weeks, For most scotches and bourbons a difference is noticeable when the bottle has been open 6-8 weeks. With one scotch, the difference is noticeable with a bottle open as little as 2 weeks.

Bad news considering most people drink for the taste and not the effect -- right? :)
