It is maiming them.

Yep - I'm all for some genuinely good news in this months-long mess, and this fits the bill.

So if I get exposed to COVID-19 from some knuckledragging antivax protester while waiting in line to be vaccinated which will kick in first, the vaccine or the 'rona?

So it says it's giving the kids plasma rich in a variety of antibodies to basically let the body think it's got the immune response handled and doesn't have to go overboard with the response.

With adults with advanced COVID, they can also get the out of control immune response with the cytokine storm. Without knowing anything, I wonder if there's any benefit in doing the same thing? Introduce the plasma with various antibodies to lessen the overboard immune response.

MIS-C is not a version of Covid-19, it's something that seems to be caused by it. I really hope it does not follow the kids all their lives or even "only" while they're kids. If so I hope the treatment is cheap in places with capitalist healthcare.

I hope this treatment helps, but we don't know without proper random selected double-blind controlled trials.

Early COVID-19 trials in interferon-beta look promising, working on a diff aspect of the immune system. This is given to people with MS to take down the autoimmune response.  https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31042-4/fulltext

Kids & adults are different in critical ways. Esp in the immune system.

I am usually the guy who can explain stuff, and not the one confused... but,

How do diseases that you fight off cause new diseases? I know that there are other examples, but I don't understand how this happens. What is the process?

And if CoViD-19 causes MIS-C right now in some children, does that mean it's likely to cause other complications for other patients later on?

2020-05-21 7:27:50 PM
A syndrome isn't a disease, it's a collection of symptoms.

FTFA: "Although doctors aren't exactly sure how IVIG helps with MIS-C, the theory is..."

I'll be that guy - why isn't the media foaming at the mouth that this wasn't a double-blind study with a larger sample size and a control group?  I mean, this was a previously approved therapy for a new application, on a new disease, that just happened to exhibit similar symptoms to an unrelated one.  One would think if the mechanisms of how a therapy addresses symptoms are what you're looking for, to at least keep you from having to go on a ventilator, then maybe you'd want to try other therapies for new applications.  Perhaps therapies with known side effects, kept restricted in use to people that test out as able to handle them.  Therapies that have been used by a LOT of people, for a LONG time, as an alternative to just letting people die.  I wonder who'd suggest such a thing?

Post-exposure effects of vaccines are usually worthwhile - the more prompt the vaccination following the exposure the better. Getting the rabies vaccine after being infected with the rabies virus has a 100% effective rate, for example.

You're on terra incognita when it comes to a vaccine for any coronavirus, much less the novel coronavirus Covid-19 which seems to keep springing so many surprises, so we'll only know how effective a treatment that is when we have one, but it seems quite likely that it would be helpful.

Fair enough, but going from kids dying to no kids dying is not a subtle change in outcome.

Gooch: That's great news; I have to say though that MIS-C is a garbage name when they just could have called it Pediatric COVID Syndrome.

That would require proof that Sars-CoV-2 or COVID-19 directly causes MIS-C, which we don't have.

While it might sound like it would be a hell of a coincidence if it didn't, there could be something else going on. For example, Legionnaire's Disease is in the news now that large office buildings are preparing to open back up again. If nobody went around and flushed toilets and ran taps regularly while the buildings were shut down, the bacteria that causes Legionnaire's Disease can take off in a big way.

Cities and towns have been operating in very non-typical fashions for an extended period of time, so bacteria of all sorts that would not normally be a problem might be flourishing now. Children, not being in school, have also not been following normal patterns of behavior and movement and may be getting exposed to things (not necessarily even bacteria or viruses) they normally wouldn't be.
