How graphic are we talking about here? Because it's not like we actually see tongues and vages in any mainstream movies with lesbian scenes.

Lee then said on Twitter it was U.S. distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films that "butchered" his film "without consultation to get more 'revenue'.'"

More revenue will be generated by *removing* oral sex?  That's perverse.  Has anyone ever been paid to *not* deliver a blow job?

So, according to TFA, the movie is a Brokeback Mountain ripoff that is trying to mask its lack of originality by just putting in a bunch of graphic sex scenes.

Kinda have to go with the distributor on that. Indie flicks using over the top graphic sex scenes to make up for story weakness and drum up "look at how edgy my movie is" publicity has been played out for 20 years.

No, Gaspar Noe, a seven minute scene of some woman giving her boyfriend a handjob isn't artistically meaningful. It just means you wrote a boring relationship drama and needed a hook to promote it.

Never said it was.
The plot synopsis seems like a direct lift of that movie's plot, subbing out cowboys in Wyoming for sheep ranchers in Buggershire, UK.

Cracks me up how people on both sides point to this as coding, but to me, he was just answering a stupidly nosey question during a moment of frustration over the events that led to him having to wear a dressing gown.

All TFA says on the matter is:

Viewers reported that at least two scenes were cut from God's Own Country, whose pastoral gay romance has been compared to Brokeback Mountain, albeit with more explicit scenes.

But given, according to TFA, the importance of an immigrant character, perhaps a film like Head On might be a closer comparison?

Brokeback Mountain's a cultural touchpoint because it grew so big; everyone knows about it, but that doesn't mean that all films about people discovering their sexualities in pastoral settings are ripped off from it.

/Not that I've seen the film in TFA, though, but I guess it's shiatty for people to decide that your work must be censored no matter why.

Snapper Carr: I'm still waiting for a film adaptation of Turned Gay by the Existential Dread That I May Actually Be a Character in a Chuck Tingle Book- directed by Charlie Kaufman.

Chuck Tingle books have two and at times as many as three levels of meta-narrative going on. Read a bunch of them and you'll find out all about it, which is part of why they are all kind of science fiction, even if it's about a literal plane with abs and a giant dick. They really aren't interconnected directly but sometimes his characters do realize that there are deeper levels that the surface of their story. It's weird. Chuck never sees the sexy parts of his stories as negative or shameful, nor is the previous sexual identity of the protagonist relevant to any story he writes. He'd never write on about being afraid of gayness. He's not even concerned about top/bottom roles. He just thinks it's great when two dudes get it on because they are in to each other because they are sexy and are buds.

Which, honestly, is about the most sunny outlook  and not-existential-dread way to look at it.

They didn't censor it because they knew it was a ripoff indie flick drumming up publicity. They censored it because they wanted more people to be able to rent it. You make it sound like they didn't want to promote it.

The film is the film. If it's not for a wider audience, it's just not. It's stupid to change the movie because that's not what its creator(s) intended.

It would be like taking "Scream" and editing out the jokes because they want to sell it to people who only want horror.
