The last exceptional thing we "did" was come out of WWII with a functional industrial base.

Republicans feeling sorry for themselves is a genre now. It is a boring genre, but not boring in a soothing way, like cricket or golf, but boring in an annoying way.

Also we had a huge amount of raw materials to access.

China has a similar thing going but for raw materials  for modern technology.

Blue States should hold back taxes until every state pays their share

Hell I'll even be generous
Divide the budget in half, every state pays 50% of that
Then for the other half divide it by 435 and each state has to pay 1/435 for each house district within their state

I blame Hillary here.  If she had called their show as often as Trump did, do you think they wouldn't put her on the air?  Of course they would put her on the air.  But it was "beneath her" or some such shiat.

American exceptionalism is farking moronic.  If I walked around work saying I'm the best person at this job in the history of this job, I would never improve.  I would not be observing colleagues who do good work to see what I can emulate or bounce ideas off of them when I have decisions to make.  I'm not the best person at my job.  I doubt any of my colleagues are outright.  We each have our strengths and it's our humility that has each one of us learning to improve by watching and analyzing those that perform some aspect of our job better than we do.

As a country, saying we are the best country in the world is basically saying that you have nothing to learn from or improve.  That is just not the case.

Also, my kids aren't the best kids in the world and my relationship with my mother isn't the best in the world.  There's always room to improve.

\ national Dunning-Kruger effect sucks.

You could have an "exceptional" airplane that is perfectly capable of getting people where they want to go, but if you put an incompetent moron at the controls you can be pretty sure it's going to crash sooner or later.

The Exceptionalism mindset is born of a retrospective that identifies a crisis and its solution in a single sentence in a history book... Those who are reading it didn't die at the Battle of Hastings so they must be exceptional.

But all we have now is the crisis.  In fact we have several.  We have years of it.  And we have no resolution to put in a history book with which we can pat ourselves on the back.

I suppose, in a technically true mindset, progress and achievement with the current era of obstruction and regression is the exception.

American exceptionalism is what made Trump possible.  People, otherwise reasonable people, looked at a demented game show host and thought, "What's the worst that could happen?  We're America."

Any potential enemy now knows that it can completely devastate your country with a biological weapon as long as they open a few facebook groups and create some twitter trollbot farms beforehand. No amount of functional carriers or smart bombs or elite commando units can help you with that.

Dafuq you mean, "The United States' military might and economic prowess remain unrivaled"?

Let's put this into persepective.

The US goes to Africa to moralize and give medical advice. China goes there to build ports and highways.

If you think the US is unrivaled, you've got an AMAZING set of blinders on.

Wasn't there an article recently about losing the last ten years with of war games with China?

They basically have a way to neutralize our projected power.

But you know, good thing they build a single airplane across 40 different states so that no senators vote against appropriating billions to keep the program going.

Clarence Brown: Why do people who believe in American exceptionalism always give such bad examples? "The United States' military might and economic prowess remain unrivaled."

But our economy was over-leveraged and on shaky ground, coming out of 2018.  It relied on milking every possible cent out of the middle and lower-middle class in order to show the stratospheric growth that was fueling the record 30k+ DJIA levels. That was completely unsustainable, and without a corporate tax base, there was no room for the Treasury to maneuver once the curtain got pulled away by COVID.

Our naval power certainly has no real rivals. We maintain more active carrier groups on the ocean than every other non-friendly country has in their inventory, combined. We can continuously and actively patrol every waterway of strategic value to our country. (Hormuz, Malacca, Gibraltar, Dardanelles, North Sea, and Panama) With the ability to project force into any part of the world within hours, we can start a nuclear war better than anyone else on the planet.  If there's anything left to clean up pilfer, our Air Force can get our Army into place more reliably than any other country, while providing them the top cover necessary to let them maneuver with impunity until an effective local resistance could be mustered.

So at least we have an awesome Navy and a decent Army that we can use to take over someone else's resources when we start to get inconvenienced. You know, like Jesus would do.

"Exceptionalism" was the excuse given to Stalin for why the American working class didn't revolt against the bourgeoisie.  Between The New Deal and the GI bill, the U.S. working class had wealth that made it in their best interest not to revolt.

However, more and more skilled workers are realizing that they can't make enough to retire decently and it's pushing them to think about how much worse it must be for the people making under $40K.

I don't think it's going to be a violent revolution, but I think America is going to get more comfortable with regulations which help spread the wealth more.

Some people are really good at being out in a social spotlight. Hillary wasn't one of them, she wanted to be president and the game is rigged so the most charismatic can win.

/ Which is one of the reasons the founding fathers put so much weight on not turning the office of president into a popularity contest.
// Or worse endowing the office w/ so much power.
/// These things are easy to abuse and will irrevocably destroy the system that everyone holds so dear.

//// Thankfully humans are endowed w/ understanding and self preservation, or we all would be strapped into the "It's a world of Shiat ride," and would be royally farked for the rest of our lives, (cause after we die we really don't care about how our offspring suffer).

Coming out of WW2 with a functional industrial base was primarily the result of physical and political geography.  North America is a natural fortress.  Canada did the same thing for the same reason.

The expectation of American Exceptionalism is what got the USA into this mess - all the other countries will be infected, except us; well, we're infected - all countries have to have aggressive testing and tracing and stay-at-home-orders, except us; economic relief directly to those impacted by the economic implosion is necessary, except us; universal healthcare systems prevented the crisis from getting worse around the globe, except for us.

American exceptionalism needs to find the round file of history.
